With the aim of creating a comprehensive maritime casualty database which will facilitate an efficient maritime safety management system for Taiwanese government, this study designs and establishes a Taiwan Maritime Casualty Database System (TMCDS). Following the guidelines from the Code for the Investigation of Marine Casualties and Incidents of the IMO and also through a comparative study resulting from the different maritime investigation authorities, this study structures a comprehensive component of such a database. Direct Versus Terminal Routing On A Maritime Hub-And-Spoke Container Network, Chaug-Ing Hsu, Yu-Ping Hsieh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study formulates a two-objective model by individually minimizing shipping costs and inventory costs to decide whether to route a shipment through a hub or directly to its destination. First, shipping and inventory cost functions are formulated for a multi-port calling route. Shipping costs include capital and operating cost, fuel cost and port charge, while inventory costs include waiting time cost and shipping time cost. Then, based on a trade-off between shipping costs and inventory costs for two types of shipping routes, Pareto optimal solutions of the two-objective model are determined, and a routing decision can be illustrated and made …

Real Exchange Rate And Current Account Dynamics With Sticky Prices And Distortionary Taxes, Guay C. Lim, Paul D. Mcnelis

CRIF Seminar series

This paper examines the interaction of real exchange rates and currenct account movmements in open economices subject to monopolistic competition with sticky price-setting behavior and distoriontary taxes. We find that the correlations between fiscal balances and the current account depend on the elasticity of net exports with respect to the real exchange rate. Under highly elastic export demand, the welfare e¤ects may be greater or lower than under export demand with a low elasticity.

In 2005, the Chinese auto production output has surpassed France and became the world’s fourth largest Auto manufacturing country (just behind US, Japan and Germany) in terms of auto-related manufacturing output. The phenomenal growth of Chinese auto manufacturing, however, received relatively little research attention.

This paper examines major Chinese auto-manufacturing firms between 1956-2000. Blanket” rate structures apply uniform rates to a geographical region in spite of differences in the costs of carrying the goods. They are generally utilized by carriers to achieve some strategic objective, whether rate simplification, to be more competitive, or to meet some political objectives. While blanket rates are common in land transportation, the Hawai’i waterborne trade offers a unique example of this pricing mechanism. This experiential exercise, designed for our introductory business course, uses a classroom debate to teach the concepts of stakeholders, social obligation/social responsibility, and ethical frameworks for decision-making. The basis for the debate is the request by Weaver’s Cove Energy to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Fall River, Massachusetts. Weaver’s Cove has proposed the facility for an abandoned industrial site on the waterfront. The exercise addresses the three learning goals listed above through readings, position construction, and the debate itself. The rationale for the assignment and the chosen pedagogy are presented. Looking Beyond The Shipyard: Economic Development Challenges Of Southern Maine And Seacoast New Hampshire, Charles S. Colgan

The threatened closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has spurred an intense examination of the future economic prospects for York County, Maine and Rockingham County, New Hampshire. This report provides the first integrated analysis of the shipyard’s effects on both the Maine and New Hampshire economies. The shipyard accounts for more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs across the two-state region. Over 80% of these jobs are in York County, with an additional 10% in Rockingham County and the balance spread through the rest of Maine and New Hampshire. The total jobs associated with the shipyard account for 3.5% of …

The Internship Program At Manhattan Christian College: The Problem Of Continued Improvement, Jeffrey G. Davis

Manhattan Christian College (MCC) has been educating, equipping, and enriching Christian leaders for over 75 years. An important part of that training process has been the academic internship program, now titled the "Directed Field Experience" (DFE). The program has encountered a period of complacency, which has some participants questioning the effectiveness of the current internship program. This action research project used questionnaires, both online and in personal interviews and focus groups, with students and DFE supervisors to identify areas of potential improvement. Potential interventions include refined definitions, communicating earlier in the process with supervisors, and developing a DFE website.

This study analyzes per capita expenditure trends among selected fast-growing Maine towns from 1970-2004. The ten communities studied are termed as “suburbanizing” towns. This term is used to describe towns that over the past 30-40 years have been in the process of transition from rural to suburban – in terms of their population and housing densities, their forms of government, and the services they provide, as well as other characteristics.1 Such towns are of particular interest because they have been absorbing a healthy percentage of the state’s population growth during this time period, often at the expense of Maine’s service …
