Medical malpractice crises occur across states to differing degrees, thus the proposed changes in state tort reforms differ accordingly. The primary overt goals of tort reform aim to address: rising medical malpractice insurance rates, increased frequency and severity of awards, and the increased incidence of doctors shuttering offices or fleeing states due to untoward malpractice environments. A secondary goal of tort reform is to reduce health care costs attributed to malpractice costs. Clearly, as malpractice tort reforms are debated in state capitols and reforms take place, the effects of the reforms on the goals above can be examined. However, there …

Chris Harmon, senior manager with the Moriarty Group of SuperValu symbol stores, sat at his desk contemplating the future. Despite the intensifying challenges of a dynamic grocery market he was well satisfied with the success of the Group’s three supermarkets. The three stores, owned by Luke Moriarty, operate under the aegis of the Musgrave Group of independent SuperValu retailers. These independent retailers had not only survived Tesco’s arrival in Ireland, but the group as a whole had grown market share.

Earnings Whisper Forecasts As Predictors Of Security Returns: Support For The Miller Price Optimism Model, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington, Jr.

This study provides empirical support for the Miller (1977) model which sets forth that security returns reflect the opinions of optimists in markets where more rational and pessimistic trading is excluded by high short-sale costs. Using the differential between earnings whisper forecasts and analysts' consensus forecasts as a proxy for heterogeneous expectations of earning, this study finds that for stacks with higher differentials, optimistic valuations dominate resulting in significantly lower future security returns than for stocks with lower differentials. Low differentials stacks are shown to resemble value stacks while high differential stocks display the characteristics of glamour stocks.

Developing And Validating A Construct Of Entrepreneurial Intensity, Jianwen Liao, Patrick J. Murphy, Harold P. Welsch

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

In this article we define, validate, and propose a construct of entrepreneurial intensity, or the degree of entrepreneurship in firms. First, in defining the construct, we explore theoretical differences between entrepreneurial intensity and orientation in order to distinguish it. Second, we empirically validate a measure of entrepreneurial intensity using data based on a sample of 563 entrepreneurs. Third, we propose avenues for research on how entrepreneurial intensity distinguishes entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial action. Finally, we detail theoretical implications of using entrepreneurial intensity as an antecedent and outcome.

The angel finance market is of critical importance to the financing and creation of rapid-growth start-ups, whose continuous creation plays a substantial role in the success of the U.S. economy. Unfortunately, the angel finance market suffers from systematic problems, including information and agency problems and high transaction costs, that limit its ability to adequately finance these rapid-growth start-ups. One reason for the angel market's inefficiency is the lack of meaningful financial intermediaries that operate in the market. Urban India is witnessing a rapid revolution in its commercial retail spaces. These transforming commercial landscapes constitute a rich arena for qualitative research using, among others, observational methods. In this paper, we present observations about the changing urban retail scene of India. We provide emergent themes that we have already found in observations so far, and also reflect on the challenges of carrying out such observations in the Indian context.

Participants in the rapidly changing computer networking arena face the significant challenge of keeping up with technologies that are often expensive to deploy, making it particularly difficult to gain hands-on experience. A survey of current job descriptions indicates that Microsoft systems continue to experience strong interest among employers. Learning alternatives are considered with a focus on a new solution to the problem of hands-on experience that has been provided by Microsoft, a virtual server lab that is available on-line and is free. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) permits eligible workers to take up to 12 weeks per year of unpaid leave for medical reasons—either their own or those of an immediate family member. In the case of personal medical leave, an employee is entitled to leave for medical conditions that constitute “serious health conditions” and that make an employee unable to perform the functions of his or her position. The FMLA statute defines “serious health condition” as: “an illness, injury, impairment or physical or mental condition that involves inpatient care or continuing treatment by a health care provider.” …

Illinois Work-Based Learning Programs: Worksite Mentor Knowledge And Training, Julie Chadd, Marcia Anderson

Teacher-coordinators and worksite mentors of high school work-based learning programs throughout Illinois were the subjects of this study which described worksite mentors' knowledge of teaching work skills to students participating in work-based learning programs and the nature of the training provided to these worksite mentors. There were no statistically significant differences in knowledge of teaching among worksite mentors based on attendance at training. Informal training was offered to worksite mentors most often to acquaint them with work-based learning program procedures. Worksite mentors who did not attend training stated it was not offered while those who attended formal training rated it …
