The port yard storage optimization problem (PYSOP) originates from space allocation needs at the Port of Singapore. Space allocated to cargo is to be minimized in a designated yard within a time interval. The problem is akin to a packing problem in space and time, but where shapes packed and constraints are particular to port operations. Further, space requests can change within the time interval in which it is requested. This basic problem is generic to port operations and may find applications elsewhere. The PYSOP is NP-hard, but we propose a number of metaheuristics. Extensive experiments were conducted and good …

Regional industrial development projects - development packages assembled, administered and promoted by consortia of sovereign national governments - are new players in the global competition for foreign investments. Singapore's flagship projects in China have received much attention. Our paper reports on Singapore's lesser-known projects in Indonesia and Vietnam. The strategic intent of these transborder industrialization initiatives is to set in place a configuration for the city-state to restructure its domestic industries, and yet retain important linkages with production centers in low-cost environments. The increasing amount of export assistance provided to firms of rich and poor countries shows the high priority given by national and international policy makers to the encouragement of international trade. Despite this, relatively few international marketing researchers have discussed the effectiveness of such export assistance. This exploratory study provides an empirical foundation for simultaneously analyzing the effects of export assistance on the decision to adapt or standardize the domestic pricing strategy to the main foreign market and ultimately improve a firm’s short-term export performance. In spring 2004, residents of historic districts in Phoenix described how they achieve historic preservation success, which factors account for success, and why some designated districts seem to achieve more success than others do. Interview transcripts were parsed through ATLAS/ti qualitative analysis software. Subsequently, a theoretical model was conceptualized and sketched. Success in neighborhood historic preservation — how residents achieve successful historic preservation outcomes — remains an important question that hold potential for redirecting the focus of professional preservation managers. Such questions also provide neighborhood preservationists with opportunities to weigh methods for working more closely with their best ‘worthy opponents.’

Business Crime: The Perception And Experience Of Victimization And Corresponding Use Of Crime Prevention Measures, John A. Casten

This study uses the concepts of routine activities theory and social disorganization theory to examine some of the factors that influence a business owner's use of crime prevention measures. I predicted that neighborhood conditions as well as personal experience with crime would influence a business owner's decision to use crime prevention measures. In addition, I controlled for sex, race, age, education level, and police presence.

The results of the study were fairly consistent with the hypothesis except for two of the variables. In this particular study, age was not a significant factor in predicting the use of crime prevention measures, …

In a symmetric game, every player is identical with respect to the game rules. We show that a symmetric 2strategy game must have a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. We also discuss Nash’s original paper and its generalized notion of symmetry in games. As a special case of Nash’s theorem, any finite symmetric game has a symmetric Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, symmetric infinite games with compact, convex strategy spaces and continuous, quasiconcave utility functions have symmetric pure-strategy Nash equilibria. Finally, we discuss how to exploit symmetry for more efficient methods of finding Nash equilibria.

Despite the huge investments by organizations in ERP implementation, maintenance, and user training, ERP implementation failures and less-than-satisfactory productivity improvements are common. End-users’ reluctance or unwillingness to adopt or use the newly implemented ERP system is often cited as one of the main reasons for ERP failures. To examine factors leading to the lack of end-user acceptance of ERP systems, we reviewed the literature on user adoption of IT in mandatory contexts, developed hypotheses to explain ERP user acceptance, and conducted a survey study to test the hypotheses. California had a market value of agricultural products sold of $25.7 billion in the year 2002 ranking it as the top agricultural producing state in the country. Approximately 74% of this market value was attributed to crop sales. California producers spent nearly $20.5 billion on total farm expenses. The largest single expense for agricultural producers in the state was labor at $4.3 billion. Another $1.6 billion was spent on contract labor. Hired and contract labor expenses accounted for nearly 29% of total farm expense. Approximately 34,000 California farms hired over 535,000 laborers. During the course of this study, 413 boaters, seven pumpout facility operators and a number of state and municipal officials either were interviewed or completed questionnaires focused on the boat sewage pumpout facilities along the South Shore of Massachusetts.

The aims of the boater survey were to:

• collect data on how boaters disposed of their sewage waste;
• learn how well informed boaters were regarding the location of sewage pumpouts;
• determine if boaters were able to find operational pumpout facilities when they needed them;

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between acculturation and aspects of family functioning (cohesion and adaptability) and family leisure involvement from Mexican-American parent, youth, and family perspectives. Acculturation of parents, youth, and families was measured using the Bidimensional Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (BAS). Family leisure involvement was measured using the Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP). Aspects of family functioning were measured using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES II). Sociodemographic variables such as age, gender, generation, family size, income, and education were also used to help predict levels of acculturation for family perspectives. The …

The purpose of this study was to determine the role and function of family recreational storytelling across the lifespan from the perspective of parents and their adult children. Twelve adults, (six pairs of adult children and their parents) were interviewed. Questions focused on ascertaining the meaning of storytelling (including the role, purpose, and function) from the perspectives of the parents and children from the same family unit. Interviews were transcribed and themes were identified and reported. Participants reported that stories generated feelings of safety, comfort, and security, and often helped create a sense of importance and belonging for individual family …

After the first business plan competition, in May 2003, San José State University (SJSU) faculty and community entrepreneurs serving on the university’s Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship (SVCE) concluded that the process should be spread over an academic year. Hence, the New Venture Fair (NVF) was born, which was held Dec. 16, 2003. The feedback from all sources has been very positive regarding the NVF. A significant NVF exhibit was the Hewlett Packard Mobile Computing Grant (HPMCG). This paper adopts the real options approach to examine vessel owners behavior in deciding whether to participate or not in the vessel buyback programs. The model allows us to investigate profit uncertainty in a decision to retire an aged vessel and the underlying value of waiting for new information about the profitability of such a change, which may affect the willingness of vessel owners to participate in the vessel buyback programs. As the world’s largest bibliographic database, OCLC’s WorldCat is well known for its uses in cataloging and interlibrary loans. Less well known is its usefulness and versatility in making day-to-day decisions about collection development. The FirstSearch interface, available throughout Kentucky, is a user-friendly and useful interface for identifying relevant materials for a library’s collection. The prepublication records are helpful as an “early warning” for new publications. Other uses include the identification of state- and subject-specific materials. This paper introduces the concept of statistical arbitrage, a long horizon trading opportunity that generates a riskless profit and is designed to exploit persistent anomalies. Statistical arbitrage circumvents the joint hypothesis dilemma of traditional market efficiency tests because its definition is independent of any equilibrium model and its existence is incompatible with market efficiency. We provide a methodology to test for statistical arbitrage and then empirically investigate whether momentum and value trading strategies constitute statistical arbitrage opportunities.
