Expert Knowledge And The Role Of Consultants In An Emerging Knowledge-Based Economy, Hans-Dieter Evers, Thomas Menkhoff Jan 2004

Expert Knowledge And The Role Of Consultants In An Emerging Knowledge-Based Economy, Hans-Dieter Evers, Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the emerging globalised knowledge society/economy, a group of professionals, namely experts and consultants gain in importance. The paper discusses the following issues: Who are these experts and consultants? Why is this group of knowledge workers strategically important and why is their importance - socially in terms of number of persons and economically in terms of output or turnover - growing? How can we explain the increasing professionalisation of consultants? How do they gain their expertise and which role does academic knowledge play in professional attainment? How do consultants package and apply expert knowledge? What are the challenges experts and …

Procedural Priming Effects On Spontaneous Inference Formation, Kirmani Amma, Michelle P. Lee, Carolyn Yoon Jan 2004

Procedural Priming Effects On Spontaneous Inference Formation, Kirmani Amma, Michelle P. Lee, Carolyn Yoon

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Procedural priming refers to how the frequent or recent use of certain cognitive procedures on one task can lead to a greater propensity to use the same procedures on a subsequent task. In this paper, we demonstrate how procedural priming may be used to assess spontaneous inference formation in situations where the inference involves a relationship or rule. We do so in the context of the advertising cost–product quality rule, i.e., that higher advertising expense implies higher product quality. Prior research suggests that underlying the advertising cost–quality rule is a basic human attribution (the effort investment rule) that says, if …

Bias In The Correlated Uniqueness Model For Mtmm Data, James M. Conway, Filip Lievens, Steven E. Scullen, Charles E. Lance Jan 2004

Bias In The Correlated Uniqueness Model For Mtmm Data, James M. Conway, Filip Lievens, Steven E. Scullen, Charles E. Lance

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This simulation investigates bias in trait factor loadings and intercorrelations when analyzing multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data using the correlated uniqueness (CU) confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model. A theoretical weakness of the CU model is the assumption of uncorrelated methods. However, previous simulation studies have shown little bias in trait estimates even when true method correlations are large. We hypothesized that there would be substantial bias when both method factor correlations and method factor loadings were large. We generated simulated sample data using population parameters based on our review of actual MTMM results. Results confirmed the prediction; substantial bias occurred in trait …

Price Rounding And Bid-Ask Spreads Before And After The Decimalization, Yan He, Chunchi Wu Jan 2004

Price Rounding And Bid-Ask Spreads Before And After The Decimalization, Yan He, Chunchi Wu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We investigate price rounding before and after the pilot decimalization on the NYSE. We find that although rounding exists in transaction, bid, and ask prices in both the pre- and postdecimalization periods, it becomes less salient after the decimalization. The cross-sectional relationship between rounding and trading variables is similar before and after the decimalization, and so is the relationship between execution costs and rounding when trading variables are held constant. More importantly, the quoted and effective bid–ask spreads decrease after decimal trading, and this decrease can be ascribed to the decrease in rounding frequency after controlling for the changes in …

Parameter Selection In Genetic Algorithms, Onur Boyabatli, Ihsan Sabuncuoglu Jan 2004

Parameter Selection In Genetic Algorithms, Onur Boyabatli, Ihsan Sabuncuoglu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study, we provide a new taxonomy of parameters of genetic algorithms (GA), structural and numerical parameters, and analyze the effect of numerical parameters on the performance of GA based simulation optimization applications with experimental design techniques. Appropriate levels of each parameter are proposed for a particular problem domain. Controversial to existing literature on GA, our computational results reveal that in the case of a dominant set of decision variable the crossover operator does not have a significant impact on the performance measures, whereas high mutation rates are more suitable for GA applications.

Internal Control Components: Did Coso Get It Right?, Marshall A. Geiger, Steven M. Cooper, Edmund J. Boyle Jan 2004

Internal Control Components: Did Coso Get It Right?, Marshall A. Geiger, Steven M. Cooper, Edmund J. Boyle

Accounting Faculty Publications

Financial accounting frauds and the attention they bring are not new. Fortunately, neither are the accounting profession’s ongoing attempts to limit these types of fraud by encouraging strong systems of internal control. In October 1986, amid growing concerns about the extent of fraudulent financial reporting, the National Commission on Fraudulent Financial Reporting (the Treadway Commission) began an extensive study and evaluation of the integrity of the U.S. system of financial reporting. The Treadway Commission’s final report, issued in 1987, provided numerous recommendations for improving the financial reporting environment and auditing standards. In response, the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO) developed …

An Empirical Analysis Of Internal Control Weaknesses Under Sas No. 78: An Examination Of State Audit Reports, Edmund J. Boyle, Steven M. Cooper, Marshall A. Geiger Jan 2004

An Empirical Analysis Of Internal Control Weaknesses Under Sas No. 78: An Examination Of State Audit Reports, Edmund J. Boyle, Steven M. Cooper, Marshall A. Geiger

Accounting Faculty Publications

While there has been a considerable amount of research regarding internal control over the past several years, scant empirical research has examined SAS No. 78's integrated five-component depiction of internal control in a government setting. In particular, to our knowledge, no study has assessed the types or frequency of weaknesses under the SAS No. 78 framework using actual internal control system findings. In this study, we examine 32 state department and agency internal control reports to assess how well the theoretical framework captures actual system weaknesses, and to determine the relative distribution of weaknesses across components of the framework.

Internal Revenue Service Restructuring And Reform Act Of 1998: A Test Of New Public Management, William Meriwether Vandenburgh Jan 2004

Internal Revenue Service Restructuring And Reform Act Of 1998: A Test Of New Public Management, William Meriwether Vandenburgh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The enactment of the 1998 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Reform Act resulted directly from perceived lapses in the federal taxation administration, which was publicly highlighted in Congressional hearings. Congress reacted by fundamentally altering the IRS’s implementation of the Internal Revenue Code (for the first time since 1952). The Joint Committee on Taxation noted that the overall objective of the 1998 IRS Reform Act was to have “a well-run IRS [which] is critical to the operation of our tax system.” From a public administration paradigm, the IRS moved from a traditional tax management methodology to a New Public Management (NPM) methodology. …

A National Set Of Competencies For Paraprofessionals In Residential College Or Living/Learning Programs, Debora Elise Baker Jan 2004

A National Set Of Competencies For Paraprofessionals In Residential College Or Living/Learning Programs, Debora Elise Baker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A competency model, for supporting student learning, was developed for the paraprofessional position (R.A., Community Assistant, etc.) in residential college or living/learning programs. The researcher developed the model through a two-stage process. In the first stage, the critical incident technique was applied utilizing the experiences of paraprofessionals at 15 different universities to develop an initial set of competencies and related tasks. In the second stage, the Delphi Technique was used to allow faculty and staff from 17 universities to refine and validate the competencies and related tasks. The final competency model includes twelve competencies related to linking hall community programs …

Do Out-Of-State Buyers Pay More For Real Estate? An Examination Of Anchoring-Induced Bias And Search Costs, Val E. Lambson, Grant R. Mcqueen, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2004

Do Out-Of-State Buyers Pay More For Real Estate? An Examination Of Anchoring-Induced Bias And Search Costs, Val E. Lambson, Grant R. Mcqueen, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

We explore the questions of whether and why out-of-state buyers pay more for real estate than their in-state counterparts. Theoretically, we develop a model capable of explaining a premium if out-of-state buyers have high search costs, upwardly biased beliefs about prices or an unusually short time horizon to purchase. Empirically, we find that out-of-state buyers pay a statistically significant and economically meaningful premium for apartment complexes in the Phoenix area. We also find some evidence consistent with the premium being driven by high search costs, biased beliefs (anchoring) and haste associated with out-of-state buyers.

The Influence Of Selected Perceptual And Demographic Factors On The Involvement Of Youth In Violent Behaviors, Nathaniel Mcclinton Jan 2004

The Influence Of Selected Perceptual And Demographic Factors On The Involvement Of Youth In Violent Behaviors, Nathaniel Mcclinton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of selected perceptual and demographic factors on the self-reported aggressive/violent behaviors of young adults while they were enrolled in school. Specific objectives formulated to guide the research were to: 1)determine the level of involvement in violence and violent behaviors; 2) determine the attitudes and beliefs of young adults; 3)determine the environmental conditions experienced by young adults when last in school; 4)determine if a relationship exists between the level of violence and violent behavior and selected perceptual and environmental factors among young adults, and finally 5)determine if a model exists to …

The Effect Of The Implicit Theory Of Integrity On An Internal Auditor's Asessment Of Management Fraud Risk, Stephanie F. Watson Jan 2004

The Effect Of The Implicit Theory Of Integrity On An Internal Auditor's Asessment Of Management Fraud Risk, Stephanie F. Watson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research project is to determine whether the implicit theory of integrity, a theory from the social psychology literature that predicts how social judgments and decisions are made, can explain internal auditors’ decisions. The implicit theory (Dweck and Leggett 1988) states that there are two types of people: (1) entity theorists and (2) incremental theorists. Entity theorists form strong inferences from observed behavior that are used to predict future behavior. Incremental theorists, on the other hand, do not infer characteristics from behavior, and therefore, do not attempt to predict future behavior. In an internal auditing context, the …

What Irritates Consumers?: An Empirical Examination Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Consumer Irritation, Sweta Chaturvedi Thota Jan 2004

What Irritates Consumers?: An Empirical Examination Of The Antecedents And Consequences Of Consumer Irritation, Sweta Chaturvedi Thota

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation develops a model of consumer irritation in the context of consumer decision-making. Thus, the purpose is to describe and empirically test a model of the antecedents and consequences of consumer irritation. The model incorporates antecedents, moderators and consequences of irritation. It is suggested that irritation in consumers has a direct as well as an indirect influence, through retention of irritation in consumers, on the outcome variables such as attitude towards the advertised brand, and intentions to engage in negative word of mouth (NWOM) behavior. The central aim of this dissertation is to extend our understanding of the irritation …

Human Capital And Learning As A Source Of Sustainable Competitive Advantage, Nile W. Hatch, Jeffrey H. Dyer Jan 2004

Human Capital And Learning As A Source Of Sustainable Competitive Advantage, Nile W. Hatch, Jeffrey H. Dyer

Faculty Publications

This paper seeks to identify the sources of wide and persistent variations in learning performance in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. In the resource-based view of the firm, human capital is frequently assumed to contribute to competitive advantage due to its inimitability based on its intangible, firm-specific, and socially complex nature. Consistent with this view, we find that investments in firm-specific human capital have a significant impact on learning and firm performance. More specifically, human capital selection (education requirements and screening), development through training, and deployment significantly improve learning by doing, which in turn improves performance. However, we find that acquiring …

Employee Stock Purchase Plans, Gary V. Engelhardt, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2004

Employee Stock Purchase Plans, Gary V. Engelhardt, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Employee stock purchase plans (ESPPs) are designed to promote employee stock ownership broadly within the firm and provide another tax-deferred vehicle for individual capital accumulation in addition to traditional pensions, 401(k)s, and stock options. We outline the individual and corporate tax treatment of ESPPs and the circumstances under which ESPPs will be preferred to cash compensation from a purely tax perspective. We then examine empirically ESPP participation using administrative data from 1997-2001 for a large health services company that employs approximately 30,000 people. The picture that emerges from the analysis of these data suggests that there is substantial non-participation in …

The Effect Of Transaction Size On Off-The-Run Treasury Prices, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill, Mark F. Meyer, Meiring De Villiers Jan 2004

The Effect Of Transaction Size On Off-The-Run Treasury Prices, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill, Mark F. Meyer, Meiring De Villiers

Faculty Publications

A price pressure effect is implied by segmentation in the market for a security. An empirical property of a segmented market is that the price of the security is sensitive to supply and demand conditions for that specific security, absent changes in risk and absent any new information. This paper examines intra-day trading data from the inter-dealer broker market for U.S. Treasury securities and finds that there is a price pressure effect in the off-the-run Treasury market. Thus, securities that would appear to be very close substitutes, i.e., on-the-run and off-the-run Treasury bonds, behave as if there is some degree …

Initial Public Offerings: An Analysis Of Theory And Practice, James C. Brau, Stanley E. Fawcett Jan 2004

Initial Public Offerings: An Analysis Of Theory And Practice, James C. Brau, Stanley E. Fawcett

Faculty Publications

We survey 336 CFOs to compare practice to theory in the areas of IPO motivation, timing, underwriter selection, underpricing, signaling, and the decision to remain private. We find the primary motivation for going public is for acquisition purposes. CFOs base IPO timing on overall market conditions, are well-informed regarding expected underpricing, and feel underpricing compensates investors for taking risk. The most important positive signal is past historical earnings, followed by underwriter certification. CFOs have divergent opinions about the IPO process depending on firm-specific characteristics. Finally, we find the main reason for remaining private is to preserve decision-making control and ownership.

Asset Pricing Theory And The Valuation Of Canadian Paintings, Douglas J. Hodgson, Keith Vorkink Jan 2004

Asset Pricing Theory And The Valuation Of Canadian Paintings, Douglas J. Hodgson, Keith Vorkink

Faculty Publications

The valuation of Canadian paintings is analysed empirically. Using a sample of auction prices for major Canadian painters for the period 1968–2001, we run hedonic regressions to analyse the influence of various factors, including painter identity, on auction prices, as well as to construct a market price index. This index is used in a second-stage analysis in which we analyse the properties of Canadian art viewed as an investment asset. We apply standard asset pricing theory, as incorporated in the capital asset pricing model (CAPM), to the analysis of price movements in the market for Canadian paintings.
