Risky Loss Distributions And Modeling The Loss Reserve Pay-Out Tail, J. David Cummins, James B. Mcdonald, Craig B. Merrill Jan 2004

Risky Loss Distributions And Modeling The Loss Reserve Pay-Out Tail, J. David Cummins, James B. Mcdonald, Craig B. Merrill

Faculty Publications

Although an extensive literature has developed on modeling the loss reserve runoff triangle, the estimation of severity distributions applicable to claims settled in specific cells of the runoff triangle has received little attention in the literature. This paper proposes the use of a very flexible probability density function, the generalized beta of the 2nd kind (GB2) to model severity distributions in the cells of the runoff triangle and illustrates the use of the GB2 based on a sample of nearly 500,000 products liability paid claims. The results show that the GB2 provides a significantly better fit to the severity data …

Worker Ownership In Enron's Wake - Revisiting A Community Development Tactic, Peter R. Pitegoff Jan 2004

Worker Ownership In Enron's Wake - Revisiting A Community Development Tactic, Peter R. Pitegoff

Faculty Publications

Worker ownership of business enterprise has long been touted as a vehicle for community economic development. Employee stock ownership plans in leveraged buy-outs, ESOPs and broad-based stock options in going concerns, and worker cooperatives in selected sectors - the experience has varied widely in goals, method, and outcome.

This Article reflects on the continued utility of worker ownership as a component of community development and calls attention to contrasts with conventional corporate governance and goals. Rather than an end in itself or just another way of doing business, worker ownership can be a vital element of a broader job creation, …

Competency Requirements For Managerial Development In Manufacturing, Assembly, And/Or Material Processing Functions, Brian C. Tietje, Clifford S. Barber Jan 2004

Competency Requirements For Managerial Development In Manufacturing, Assembly, And/Or Material Processing Functions, Brian C. Tietje, Clifford S. Barber

Marketing

Organizations that include a manufacturing, assembly and/or material processing (MAMP) functions have become increasingly complex, competitive, and dynamic. These organizations demand increased emphasis on recruiting, developing, and retaining management talent to gain a competitive edge. This paper uses a modified Delphi triangulation approach to identify and categorize first-level MAMP management competencies perceived to be important by three critical stakeholder groups – an expert MAMP upper management panel, first-level MAMP managers who have been employed between one to three years, and business management faculty members. The results identify 14 knowledge, skill, and value-based competencies and three higher-order factors as essential components …

Is The Implicit Association Test A Valid And Valuable Measure Of Implicit Consumer Social Cognition?, Frederic F. Brunel, Brian C. Tietje, Anthony G. Greenwald Jan 2004

Is The Implicit Association Test A Valid And Valuable Measure Of Implicit Consumer Social Cognition?, Frederic F. Brunel, Brian C. Tietje, Anthony G. Greenwald

Marketing

This article discusses the need for more satisfactory implicit measures in consumer psychology and assesses the theoretical foundations, validity, and value of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) as a measure of implicit consumer social cognition. Study 1 demonstrates the IAT’s sensitivity to explicit individual differences in brand attitudes, ownership, and usage frequency, and shows their correlations with IAT-based measures of implicit brand attitudes and brand relationship strength. In Study 2, the contrast between explicit and implicit measures of attitude toward the ad for sportswear advertisements portraying African American (Black) and European American (White) athlete–spokespersons revealed different patterns of responses to …

The Effect Of Internet Booking On The Central Florida Lodging Market O, Scott Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study reviews the effect of Internet bookings on the Central Florida lodging market over the past five years. As the number of lodging accommodations booked directly by the consumer over the Internet continues to increase, the ramifications brought about by this emerging distribution channel have not been fully investigated or interpreted. This study observes how Internet-enabled distribution channel bookings have trended in occupancy and average daily rate in the Central Florida lodging market in the past five years. Specifically the author segmented the survey respondents into the lodging product service categories of budget, moderate, upscale and luxury to analyze …

The Impact Of Selected Socio-Demographic, Travel-Related And Psychogra, Nichakarn Peerapatdit Jan 2004

The Impact Of Selected Socio-Demographic, Travel-Related And Psychogra, Nichakarn Peerapatdit

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several researchers have attempted to understand the tourism expenditure patterns from the traveler's perspective (Cai, Hong, and Morrision, 1995; Dardis, et al., 1981; Prais and Houthakker,1971; Sheldon and Mak , 1987; Jang, et al.,2003). However, an examination of the previous studies indicates that only limited understanding of the traveler's expenditure patterns has been provided either because of only anecdotal evidence in the studies, or because of their failure to examine the impacts of the factors affecting expenditure patterns. This study examined the effects of socio-demographic, travel-related, and psychographic variables on travel expenditures. The expenditure patterns included lodging, meals and restaurants, …

Exploring Online Brand Choice At The Sku Level : The Effects Of Internet-Specific Attributes, Yanan Wang Jan 2004

Exploring Online Brand Choice At The Sku Level : The Effects Of Internet-Specific Attributes, Yanan Wang

Lingnan Theses

E-Commerce research shows that existing studies on online consumer choice behavior has focused on comparative studies of channel or store choice (online or offline), or online store choice (different e-tailers). Relatively less effort has been devoted to consumers’ online brand choice behavior within a single e-tailer. The goal of this research is to model online brand choice, including generating loyalty variables, setting up base model, and exploring the effects of Internet-specific attributes, i.e., order delivery, webpage display and order confirmation, on online brand choice at the SKU level. Specifically, this research adopts the Multinomial Logit Model (MNL) as the estimation …

Heuristics For A Brokering Set Packing Problem, Yunso Guo, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues, Yi Zhu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper we formulate the combinatorial auction brokering problem as a Set Packing Problem (SPP) and apply a simulated annealing heuristic to solve SPP. Experimental results are compared with a recent heuristic algorithm and also with the CPLEX Integer Programming solver where we found that the simulated annealing approach outperforms the previous heuristic method and CPLEX obtaining results within smaller timescales.

Challenges To Academic Marketing: Toward The Next Decade, David B. Montgomery Jan 2004

Challenges To Academic Marketing: Toward The Next Decade, David B. Montgomery

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

At the turn of the century and millennium, the Marketing Science Institute and the American Marketing Association undertook in a conference and a special issue of the Journal of Marketing to examine what were seen as fundamental issues and directions for marketing in the dawning millennium. A series of competitively commissioned papers addressed such questions as: How do customers and consumers really behave? How do markets function and evolve? How do firms relate to their markets? And what are the contributions of marketing to organizational performance and societal welfare? These questions were thought to best satisfy the criteria of differentiation, …

Social Trust, Cooperation, And Human Capital, Fali Huang Jan 2004

Social Trust, Cooperation, And Human Capital, Fali Huang

Research Collection School Of Economics

The importance of social trust on economic growth has been suggested by many empirical works. This paper formalizes the concept of social trust and studies its formation process in a game theoretic setting. It provides plausible explanations for a wide range of empirical and experimental findings. The main results of the paper are as follows. For utility-maximizing players, cooperation arises in one-period prisoner’s dilemmas if and only if there is social trust. The amount of social trust in a given game is determined by the distribution of players’ cooperative tendency. Cooperative tendency is in essence a component of human capital …

Implications Of Personal Recovery History For Training And Development Of Addiction Treatment Workers, Bruce K. Barnard Jan 2004

Implications Of Personal Recovery History For Training And Development Of Addiction Treatment Workers, Bruce K. Barnard

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to identify and compare competencies perceived as most important by addiction treatment workers with, and without, a personal history of recovery. A survey was developed and administered to 94 workers in three community-based addiction treatment agencies. The study found broad support for the competencies published by the Addiction Technology Transfer Center, National Curriculum Committee (1998). There were no significant differences in perceptions of competencies by workers with a personal recovery history and those without such history. Results indicate that factors such as workplace culture may be more powerful than recovery history in influencing worker …

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This article discusses the literature coverage on Boards of Advisors to date and provides the results of a study designed to determine the formation and composition of Boards of Advisors and the ways in which small businesses use such boards. Our study surveyed the Chief Executive Officers or Presidents of a large sample of small businesses. We found that there is very limited use of Boards of Advisors in small businesses and that many small business managers are not aware of the concept of a Board of Advisors. However, those small business managers (97%) that use a Board of Advisors …

Transnational Labor Mobilizing In Two Mexican Maquiladoras: The Struggle For Democratic Globalization, Victoria Carty Jan 2004

Transnational Labor Mobilizing In Two Mexican Maquiladoras: The Struggle For Democratic Globalization, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

The struggle to improve workers' rights in Mexican maquiladoras and export processing zones elsewhere in the world is central to the politics of global economic integration. State-centered development is increasingly compromised by supranational institutions and trade agreements. Meanwhile, multinational corporations are relocating at an unprecedented rate to overseas locations. Export processing zones are notorious for poor working conditions and result in a "race to the bottom." The maquila sector in Mexico is a prime example of this phenomenon. This article uses two case studies to examine ways in which grassroots organizing has successfully resisted low wages and poor working conditions …

Measuring Online Students' Ability To Apply Programming Theory: Are Web Courses Really Working?, Kathryn A. Marold, Wayne Haga Jan 2004

Measuring Online Students' Ability To Apply Programming Theory: Are Web Courses Really Working?, Kathryn A. Marold, Wayne Haga

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

As a response to troubling doubts about the success of Web-delivered courses that include problem solving and critical thinking skills, the authors gathered data from two online sections of the CIS Application Programming with Visual Basic course at Metropolitan State College of Denver over two semesters and compared it with the data from classroom sections. T-tests showed a significant difference in the means of student projects and tests that required application of theory learned. All sections of the course used the same syllabus and assignments and were taught by the same instructor. Internet students scored significantly lower in theory portions …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Internet Diffusion And Culture, Ravi Nath, N.R. Vasudeva Murthy Jan 2004

A Study Of The Relationship Between Internet Diffusion And Culture, Ravi Nath, N.R. Vasudeva Murthy

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The unevenness in the diffusion rates of the Internet across nations is commonly referred to as the “digital divide.” Technological, economic and political factors are often mentioned as the primary contributing factors to this digital gap. However, there is sufficient evidence in support of the proposition that a nation’s culture also plays a role in how citizens adopt and use technology innovations. This paper examines the relationship between the cultural dimensions proposed by Hofstede and the Internet adoption rate of nations. Data from sixty-two countries are used to establish a regression model and the empirical results show that cultural traits …

The Impacts Of Conflicts On Requirements Uncertainty And Project Performance, Houn-Gee Chen, James J. Jiang, Jun-Cheng Chen, J T. Shim Jan 2004

The Impacts Of Conflicts On Requirements Uncertainty And Project Performance, Houn-Gee Chen, James J. Jiang, Jun-Cheng Chen, J T. Shim

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Conflict is a pervasive phenomenon that permeates information systems development and implementation. The literature has indicated that conflicts, due to their association with negative emotion, will negatively influence IS project development, even after controlling for the effects of conflict management and resolution; however, the negative emotional characteristic of conflict alone has a limited explanatory power of IS project success. The purpose of this study is to provide additional insight, by including requirement uncertainty as the mediator variable, of the impacts of conflicts on project performance. Surveys were sent to Taiwan’s top 1600 companies and the results support the hypotheses. The …

Development Of An It Balanced Scorecard, Theophilus B.A. Addo, Chee W. Chow, Kamal M. Haddad

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

There is a generally acknowledged dearth of metrics for effectively measuring organizational performance. This is particularly true of the IT function, whose contribution to a firm’s “bottom line” has been frequently called to question. This paper describes the development of a performance measurement tool called the Balanced Scorecard, which can be used to assess IT performance within the context of overall corporate strategy and financial performance. Data for the scorecard was obtained via a survey of senior IT executives in various organizations. The paper concludes with a set of guidelines for successfully implementing an IT Balanced Scorecard, as well as …

The Demand For Information Technology Knowledge And Skills: An Exploratory Investigation, Stuart D. Galup, Ronald Dattero, Jim J. Quan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Organizations are always in search of appropriate information technology knowledge and skills to carry out normal business operations. Such demand is directly impacted by the overall economic conditions. During stressful economic times, managers, facing tough budgetary pressure, are forced to examine more thoroughly what knowledge and skills are needed to survive. This paper investigates the desired information technology knowledge and skills that employers are searching for in these turbulent times. We examine the content of job advertisements for information technology professionals placed in an online job placement website over a 2 year period, 2001-2002.

Construct Validation Of An Arabic Version Of The Learning Transfer System Inventory For Use In Jordan, Samer Abdelkarim Khasawneh Jan 2004

Construct Validation Of An Arabic Version Of The Learning Transfer System Inventory For Use In Jordan, Samer Abdelkarim Khasawneh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Organizations in Jordan have invested heavily in employee training. However, these training efforts may not be as effective. One area of particular interest is learning transfer, or the extent to which learning from training is applied on the job. Recent research efforts have led to the development of the Learning Transfer System Inventory (LTSI), the only valid and reliable measure of key transfer system factors. This study validated the constructs of the LTSI for use in Jordan. By doing so, HRD practitioners in Jordan can use such instrument to diagnose early problems with learning transfer, the key to training effectiveness …

The Interrelations Between Investor Beliefs, Information And Market Liquidity, Stephanie Yates Rauterkus Jan 2004

The Interrelations Between Investor Beliefs, Information And Market Liquidity, Stephanie Yates Rauterkus

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I use two datasets to test the relation between trading volume, the heterogeneity of beliefs and the heterogeneity of belief revisions. The first dataset allows me to construct two groups that proxy for ‘holders’ and ‘non-holders’ of a traded asset. This construct allows me to test the relation between changes in trading volume and changes in the dispersion of beliefs both within and across these two groups. I examine changes in within- and across-group dispersion separately and simultaneously. The second dataset allows me to examine belief revisions more closely by analyzing only those prior and posterior beliefs surrounding an information …

The Individual, The Source, And The Context: An Investigation Of Antecedents And Consequences Of Feedback Seeking Behavior, Robin Anne Cheramie Jan 2004

The Individual, The Source, And The Context: An Investigation Of Antecedents And Consequences Of Feedback Seeking Behavior, Robin Anne Cheramie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the last twenty years, researchers have examined why individuals may proactively seek performance feedback in the workplace. Since Ashford and Cummings' (1983) seminal article, situational and individual difference variables have predominantly been examined to predict how often employees will seek feedback. One situational variable that has been researched but not sufficiently examined is the feedback context. A public or a private feedback context considers whether the presence of an audience inhibits or facilitates feedback seeking behaviors. This dissertation explores the role of the feedback context by developing a conceptual model to determine how frequently employees may seek feedback in …
