Liberalisation, Alliances And Technology Transfer- India's High Technology Sector, Luis Murillo

IIMB Management Review

Newly industrialising countries may lead the world in the coming century, and among them, India may well develop an impressive high technology sector, based in part on a vigorous microelectronics industry. From a situational analysis of the present Indian context, Murillo asserts that subject to judicious policies in education, infrastructure construction, market liberalisation, global alliances and political stability, it is only a matter of time before India becomes a power in the manufacture of semiconductors.

Cost Of Capital In The Indian Context, Mahesh Santhanam

IIMB Management Review

The major problem faced while calculating the cost of capital in a developing country like India is the extreme volatility and illiquidity of the financial markets. Drawing upon various theories and empirical evidence specific to the Indian context, Mahesh Santhanam guides managers and finance professionals who analyse and evaluate capital budgeting projects that involve consideration of the cost of capital.

The Evolving Role Of Semiconductor Consortia In The United States And Japan, Rose Marie Ham, Greg Linden, Melissa M. Appleyard

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the interactions between public and private actors as cooperation in the semiconductor industry becomes increasingly international. The latest manifestations of multilateral collaboration are two consortia: I300I based in the United States and Selete based in Japan. Through an analysis of their structures and their origins, this article provides a deeper understanding of the complexities facing industry-wide consortia, the role of the government in promoting or inhibiting cooperation, and the lingering rivalries that impede truly global cooperation in a dynamic, high-technology industry.

Asian Expatriate Development: A Comparative Study Of Japanese, Korean And Singaporean Expatriates, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan Oct 1998

Asian Expatriate Development: A Comparative Study Of Japanese, Korean And Singaporean Expatriates, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Owing to rapid internationalization of business activity, human resource development (HRD) has become increasingly important in recent years. This is especially true when domestic human resource management takes on international dimensions as it deals more with multicultural workforce. International HRD, much of it embodied in cross-cultural training, has been proposed by many scholars as a means of facilitating more effective interaction among managers, employees and customers from different national-cultural backgrounds. Despite the need for cross-cultural skills and the shortage of managers who possess these skills, most human resource decision-makers do nothing in terms of cross-cultural training for their employees. Studies …

Consumer Generalization Of Nutrient Content Claims In Advertising, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer, Scot Burton Oct 1998

Consumer Generalization Of Nutrient Content Claims In Advertising, J. Craig Andrews, Richard G. Netemeyer, Scot Burton

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Although considerable research exists on consumer processing of nutrition labeling and package claims, less is known about consumer interpretation of nutrient content claims in advertising. This is important because product advertising often provides a significant first step for consumers in learning new nutrition information. Yet, unlike package claims, Nutrition Facts Panels are often not available for consumers during the processing of such advertising claims. Therefore, the authors examine the following research questions: (1) Do consumers misinterpret (i. e., overgeneralize) common nutrient content claims in advertising? If so, under what conditions does this occur? and (2) Can various types of disclosure …

Investigating Equity Sensitivity As A Moderator Of Relations Between Self-Efficacy And Workplace Attitudes, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Mark A. Mone Oct 1998

Investigating Equity Sensitivity As A Moderator Of Relations Between Self-Efficacy And Workplace Attitudes, Bonnie S. O'Neill, Mark A. Mone

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This study integrated measures of equity sensitivity and self-efficacy in an effort to better understand how these variables may affect job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and intent to leave. Equity sensitivity denotes how sensitive people are to overreward and underreward situations and has recently enhanced the accuracy of equity theory in predicting job satisfaction in social exchange situations. Self-efficacy, or task-specific self-confidence, is a central component of Bandura's social cognitive theory, and its influence on individuals' goals, efforts, and task persistence is well documented. Results from a field study of 242 employees in a health care firm support the moderating role …

New Paradigms In Marketing, M J Xavier Oct 1998

New Paradigms In Marketing, M J Xavier

IIMB Management Review

Though companies today are getting more customer focused and market driven, marketing departments seem to be relegated to the background. The four Ps, long considered the universal marketing approach, now seem inadequate. The advent of the quality movement, the emergence of services marketing, the developments in strategic marketing and business to business marketing have added new dimensions to marketing. In order to regain their rightful place in organisations, Xavier urges marketers to reorient themselves to the customer, develop a cross functional perspective and a deeper understanding of company competencies.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

DUANE R. CARR critiques the redneck stereotypes who populate the fiction of Cormac McCarthy as poorly developed grotesques providing little wisdom and much contempt for backcountry folk. Currently Adjunct Professor at Western Kentucky University, Carr has published articles on Steinbeck, Albee, Joyce, and Glasgow. The present article is drawn from a broader survey published as A Question of Class: The Redneck Stereotype in Southern Literature.

CATHERINE COWEN OLSON explores Jane Smiley's use of the food characters prepare and eat in A Thousand Acres to expose their feelings and intentions. A teacher of English at Kingwood College in Houston, Texas, she …

The Effect Of Store Name, Brand Name And Price Discounts On Consumers' Evaluations And Purchase Intentions, Dhruv Grewal, R. Krishnan, Julie Baker, Norm A. Borin Oct 1998

The Effect Of Store Name, Brand Name And Price Discounts On Consumers' Evaluations And Purchase Intentions, Dhruv Grewal, R. Krishnan, Julie Baker, Norm A. Borin

Marketing

This paper develops and tests a conceptual model of the effects of store name, brand names and price discounts on consumers' evaluations (store image, brand quality perceptions, internal reference prices, and value perceptions) and purchase intentions. The moderating effects of consumer knowledge and prior ownership on the proposed relationships in the model are also explored. A store's perceived image is influenced by the store name and the quality of merchandise It carries. Results also indicate that internal reference price is influenced by price discounts, brand name, and a brand's perceived quality. The influence of price discounts on a brand's perceived …

Market Orientation And Organizational Performance: Is Innovation A Missing Link?, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Rajendra K. Srivastava Oct 1998

Market Orientation And Organizational Performance: Is Innovation A Missing Link?, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Rajendra K. Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, a market-oriented corporate culture increasingly has been considered a key element of superior corporate performance. Although organizational innovativeness is believed to be a potential mediator of this market orientation-corporate performance relationship, much of the evidence to date remains anecdotal or speculative. In this context, the authors present a systematic framework to test the postulated "market orientation-innovation-performance" chain. To this end, the direct causality assumption of market orientation on organizational performance is examined with Narver and Slater's (1990) market orientation framework. Moreover, the authors take a componentwise approach and examine how the three core components of market orientation …

Going-Concern Audit Report Recipients Before And After Sas No. 59, Marshall A. Geiger, Kannan Raghunandan, D. V. Rama

Accounting Faculty Publications

In an attempt to provide information to make an evaluation on whether the requirements under SAS No. 59 have had any significant effect on auditor reporting decisions, a study was conducted that examined companies receiving going-concern modified reports before and after the implementation of SAS No. 59. We wanted to assess whether auditors were issuing going-concern modified reports to clients exhibiting different levels of financial stress and also whether the bankruptcy rate of such companies was different after the adoption of SAS No. 59.

The Effects Of Corporate Diversification And Control On Division Risk-Taking Strategy And Performance, Hae Ryong Kim Oct 1998

The Effects Of Corporate Diversification And Control On Division Risk-Taking Strategy And Performance, Hae Ryong Kim

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This research explored two major functions of corporate strategic management, corporate diversification (core-business relatedness) and corporate control, and their implications for divisional strategic management. Four research questions were raised to address these issues: (1) does core-business relatedness matter to division performance? (2) how does core-business relatedness influence corporate control? (3) how does core-business relatedness influence division risk-taking strategies and performance? and (4) how does corporate control influence division risk-taking strategies and performance?

Adopting the resource-based view and organizational learning theory, this study proposed that core-business related divisions would outperform unrelated divisions and that core-business related divisions would have higher commitment …

Market Reaction To Seasoned Equity Offerings: The Relevance Of Leverage, Growth Opportunities, And Corporate Structure, Mojib U. Ahmed Oct 1998

Market Reaction To Seasoned Equity Offerings: The Relevance Of Leverage, Growth Opportunities, And Corporate Structure, Mojib U. Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Empirical work on the market's reaction to seasoned equity offerings has rarely considered the impact of the issuing firm's leverage level or its corporate structure. This work is an attempt to include these parameters in order to better understand the market's reaction to such issue announcements.

The current finance literature recognizes the fact that leverage plays an important role in assessing the value of the firm. Leverage has both negative and positive impacts on the value of a firm (McConnell and Servaes, 1995), and thus, has both negative and positive impacts on the market's reaction to seasoned equity offerings. This …

One Of The Greatest Baseball Seasons In My Lifetime, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Everyone is saying it and so I am hesitant to say it too, but I will. This has been a great baseball season and maybe the best of my lifetime, and it continued into an extra day.
