Voice User Interfaces (Vuis) Emerge, Brian D. Lynch

Journal of International Information Management

Human beings use speech as the primary means of communication. Therefore, voice user interfaces (VUIs) represent a natural way for people to interact with computers (Fournier, 1996; Hyde, 1979; Teja and Gonnella, 1983; Witten 1982). Voice input facilitates a much higher computer input rate than keyboard or mouse driven input. Voice output permits computer generated output in devices when output screens are not available (e.g., most phones) or in situations where the user's eyes are busy elsewhere (e.g., driving a car, assembling a product, etc.). As military missions change and new equipment is fielded out training lands become increasingly more restricted due to environmental, logistical, and financial constraints. We must become better stewards of the land if we are going to continue to train troops to meet the next mission. GIS is a powerful tool for military trainers, environmentalists, and natural resource planners. Journal of International Information Management

This study examines the role and the involvement of management in information technology acquisition, planning, and development. The results indicate that top management plays a major role in setting the overall information technology policies. In addition, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) plays a crucial role in the merger of information strategy and corporate strategy. The result also indicates that user's satisfaction is considered to be the most important r factor for justification of information technology acquisition.

During the summer months of 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998, the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies at the University of Central Florida has conducted a survey of Central Florida hospitality industry properties regarding wages paid and employee benefits. This five year project has been sponsored by the Hotel Human Resource Association of Central Florida and has been supported by the Central Florida Hotel Motel Association. This comprehensive study solicits and reports data on wages and benefits from 364 hospitality organizations covering 119 occupational/hourly job titles and 45 management/supervisory positions. Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We estimate an ARCH-M model to analyze the relationship between the conditional standard deviation of real gross national product (GNP) and its growth rate for the period 1871-1993. We find that variability significantly increases output growth rates. In addition, impulse response functions show that the effect of variability on growth rates is dynamic. These results provide evidence in favor of Black's (1987) business cycle hypothesis.

This report contains information from a 1996 survey on production practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few empirical data are available on production practices of cow/calf and stocker operations in Arkansas. This report shows that there are some differences in production methods across operation types. Further, the report summarizes demographic characteristics of Arkansas cow/calf and stocker operations. The results of this study can be particularly helpful in providing the needed data for studying the potential economic impact of feeding weaned calves to heavier weights in …

This report contains information from a 1996 survey on marketing practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few data are available on what marketing techniques and decision criteria cow-calf and stocker operations use to market their cattle. This report shows that there are some differences in opinions on marketing issues such as pooled cattle sales and retained ownership across cow-calf and stocker operations. This paper presents the discourse of the "science of accounts" as it developed in 19th century U.S. accounting literature. The paper initially emphasizes the meaning which the term "science of accounts" had during this period. In addition, it presents the contemporary belief that this science helped reveal the essential economic ontology, which bookkeeping makes visible. Second, the paper analyzes how this rational institutional myth became institutionalized within the emerging profession's technical journals and its professional organization, the Institute of Accounts. Managing For Flexibility: A Manufacturing Perspective, Ravi Kathuria

This paper investigates managerial practices that are conducive to the management of flexibility. Using data from manufacturing plants in the United States, this paper identifies managerial practices that manufacturing managers strongly demonstrate in plants that place a high emphasis on flexibility. The results indicate that managers who pursue flexibility, emphatically engage in team building, employee empowerment, and other relationship oriented practices that generate enthusiasm among employees. These practices seemingly motivate workers to deal with the uncertainty and changes, in the form of product mix, customer delivery schedule, capacity adjustments, etc., that characterize manufacturing flexibility. Managers must understand, influence, and redesign organizational processes to improve business performance. In this paper we present a technique for documenting a business process. The technique has six steps: defining process boundaries, collecting data, determining actors and resources, determining activities, determining dependencies and model verification. While similar to other process mapping techniques, our approach is novel in incorporating ideas from coordination theory, thus the attention to dependencies. As a result, the technique is useful both for documenting a process and suggesting ways in which the process could be redesigned. This dissertation studies the effect of implementing everyday low purchase price policy (EDLPP) for a manufacturer in consumer non-durable market. In the framework, many .important retailer and consumer behaviors are considered. A major finding of the study is that temporary price discount (a Hi-Lo policy) is generally unprofitable to the manufacturer because the sales increase due to the discount is usually offset by the decreased profit margin and increased total production and inventory related costs. Another important finding is that the retailer plays a critical role as an active middle agent.
