During the summer of 1996 I dedicated two months of my life to backpacking Western Europe. It was the most incredible experience of my life. It is my belief that many students at UNI would love to have the opportunity to travel as I did. In fact, a journey across Europe is completely within the reaches of the typical UNI student. Planning such a trip is systematic and reasonably simple. From obtaining passports to buying airline tickets and train passes, all aspects of planning a European backpacking excursion can be accomplished easily.

The Role Of Gender In A Developmental Assessment Center, Ted H. Shore, Armen Tashchian, Janet S. Adams

Male (n = 119) and female (n = 90) professional employees in a large financial services organization participated in a one-day developmental assessment center, and were assessed in three dyadic role-playing exercises by male or female assessors. In each exercise, one assessor rated participants on specific behaviors which were subsequently averaged by a computer program to produce final exercise dimension ratings. Results showed no significant differences in ratings for male and female assessees on any dimensions in any of the exercises. Women assessors rated candidates of both sexes higher on some dimensions than did male assessors in an employee counseling …

Research indicates that in order to successfully start, operate, and perpetuate a fulfillment service, business owners must focus on issues such as market analysis, service, finance issues, and operations. In 1996, a presidential initiative was launched in which the general American public was encouraged to actively become involved in local not-for-profit agencies. Because of this call for volunteers, an influx of people are likely to become non-profit agency board members. Many of these new board members may not have previous board experience. This study examines the stock return responses to the announcements of foreign direct investments (FDI) by Singaporean companies. A standard event study methodology is used to ascertain the abnormal returns around the announcement day (day 0). The study covers the period from 1989 to 1994 with a sample size of 70 events. The announcement effect is positive and significant around the announcement day. The average abnormal return is 0.4913 percent on day 0, and the two-day (days 0 and 1) cumulative abnormal return is 0.9642 percent. Studies of advertising beliefs and attitudes are crucial because these measures are shown to affect brand attitudes and purchase intentions. Previous studies in this area used either student or general consumers samples; no comparisons were made between the two groups. Therefore, it is not known whether and to what extent responses of student samples are likely to differ from those of general consumers. Differences would indicate that the two segments view advertising dissimilarly. However, by applying covariance structure analysis on a sample of students and a sample of general consumers from India, our study found no significant differences between them …

Managed Care is a generic term for a broad and constantly changing mix of health insurance, assistance and payment programs which seek to retain quality and access while controlling the cost of physical and mental health services. The introduction of managed care fundamentally transforms the traditional “agency” relationships on which modern social work was built. Little research on its impact on social services is currently available. This article provides information on economist Lucien Albert Hahn's influence on economics, and highlights similarity between Hahn and A.W. Phillips. Hahn's work was, in some important circles, fairly central to what Gottfried Haberler called the last great debate on inflation in the 1950s. The great debate in the 1970s was over the Phillips curve trade-off; in the 1950s, economist Sumner H. Slichter advocated the proposition that creeping inflation could be permanently tolerated. The context was the Delphic Oracular quality of the 1946 U.S. Employment Act, and the apparent incompatibility of the pursuit of full employment with price stability. Hahn was …

The methodology used in this study is a documentary one. Sources relating to the economic implications of dropping out o f high school among African Americans were studied. The removal of the age retirement barrier has led to expectations that more and more older workers will remain in the workforce past the usual retirement age of 65. Women make up an increasing proportion of older workers, and Patrickson and Hartmann ( 1996) have shown that Australian women are planning not to retire in order to improve their retirement income.

In Australia today there is widespread interest in homeworking and teleworking as flexible work options with significant advantages to both employers and employees. In the research behind this guide we surveyed 500 Australian organisations, finding employer interest in these advantages, along with uncertainty about how to implement homeworking, and some worries about potential drawbacks. Significantly, those organisations that had implemented homeworking reported positive outcomes. In an interview study, homeworkers themselves reported improved work performance, and were appreciative of the flexibility. This guide shows how to implement homework and telework to achieve such outcomes while avoiding the problems that concern managers.
