Doctor McQuillen, of Philadelphia, was elected fourth president of the Association at the 1864 meeting at Niagara Falls. The original suggestion for the creation of the American Dental Association came from the pen of Doctor McQuillen, who wrote under the pseudonym "Junius." Doctor McQuillen had been chairman of the committee that drafted the Association's Constitution and Bylaws. Doctor McQuillen conducted original research in dental histology and was particularly interested in microscopic work. He contributed articles to the dental literature on a wide variety of topics. Doctor Mead, an oral surgeon, served as president of the District of Columbia Dental Society in 1929. He was a professor of oral surgery at Georgetown University School of Dentistry.
