Inferring User Consumption Preferences From Social Media, Yang Li, Jing Jiang, Ting Liu
Inferring User Consumption Preferences From Social Media, Yang Li, Jing Jiang, Ting Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social Media has already become a new arena of our lives and involved different aspects of our social presence. Users' personal information and activities on social media presumably reveal their personal interests, which offer great opportunities for many e-commerce applications. In this paper, we propose a principled latent variable model to infer user consumption preferences at the category level (e.g. inferring what categories of products a user would like to buy). Our model naturally links users' published content and following relations on microblogs with their consumption behaviors on e-commerce websites. Experimental results show our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods significantly …

Location Matters: Geospatial Policy Analytics Over Time For Household Hazardous Waste Collection In California, Kustini Lim-Wavde, Robert John Kauffman, Tin Seong Kam, Gregory S. Dawson
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
By integrating mapping and geospatial data into a county-level datasetfor exploratory analysis, we will demonstrate how to provide useful insightsfor waste managers and local governments regarding spatial patterns ofhousehold hazardous waste (HHW) collection and how it changes over time. We usemap-based visualization to display patterns of spatial intensity and countylocations for HHW collection in California from 2004 to 2015. We use exploratory spatial data analyticsmethods to characterize the spatial distribution of HHW collected per person. When we considered the spatial relationships, we were able to develop andestimate a geographically-weighted regression to explain how different regionalfactors influence the amount of HHW collected. …
Environmentally Friendly Industries: An Examination Of Ecotourism As The Solution To The Environmental Degradation Caused By The International Tourism Industry, Whitney Michael
Honors Theses – Charlotte Campus
The increasing visibility of ecological alterations due to global climate change have required high-impact industries to reexamine their environmental impact. Transnational organizations such as the United Nations have identified the current management practices of the international tourism industry as a significant contributing factor to global warming. The high volume implications of the large-scale establishments necessary to lodging facilities in the tourism trade are responsible for damages such as resource depletion and pollution. Existing levels of environmental impact show irreparable and imminent damage to the world environment if current methods of the industry are allowed to continue.

Robust Optimization For Tree-Structured Stochastic Network Design, Xiaojian Wu, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon
Robust Optimization For Tree-Structured Stochastic Network Design, Xiaojian Wu, Akshat Kumar, Daniel Sheldon
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stochastic network design is a general framework for optimizing network connectivity. It has several applications in computational sustainability including spatial conservation planning, pre-disaster network preparation, and river network optimization. A common assumption in previous work has been made that network parameters (e.g., probability of species colonization) are precisely known, which is unrealistic in real- world settings. We therefore address the robust river network design problem where the goal is to optimize river connectivity for fish movement by removing barriers. We assume that fish passability probabilities are known only imprecisely, but are within some interval bounds. We then develop a planning …

The word “Management” in the name of our university was carefully and deliberately chosen to address the needs of institutions and decisionmakers across all segments of society: business enterprises and the private sector, government and the public sector, and civil society and the people sector. Unless you are already familiar with the breadth and depth of research output from Singapore Management University (SMU), you would naturally assume that we were a “management” university that was focusing exclusively on business – in essence, a large business school. The reality is quite different.

Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning techniques are expected to reshape the nature of the working environment in many economic sectors through the automation of many white collar jobs. This technological breakthrough poses threats of job obsolescence in several industries, particularly for a labor abundant country such as the Philippines. With human capital as one of its largest resources, the services sector is a major contributor to the country’s economy, contributing around 60% of the total gross domestic product and employing about 22.8 million workers (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2017).

© 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Many e-commerce websites allow customers to provide reviews that reflect their experiences and opinions about the business's products or services. Such published reviews potentially benefit the business's reputation, improve both current and future customers' trust in the business, and accordingly improve the business. Negative reviews can inform the merchant of issues that, when addressed, also improve the business. However, when reviews reflect negative experiences and the merchant fails to respond, the business faces potential loss of reputation, trust, and damage. We present the Sentiminder system that identifies reviews with negative sentiment, organizes …

Similar to software products, the quality of a Business Process model is vital to the success of all the phases of its lifecycle. Indeed, a high quality BP model paves the way to the successful implementation, execution and performance of the business process. In the literature, the quality of a BP model has been assessed through either the application of formal verification, or most often the evaluation of quality metrics calculated in the static and/or simulated model. Each of these assessment means addresses different quality characteristics …

Clinical practice calls for reliable diagnosis and optimized treatment. However, human errors in health care remain a severe issue even in industrialized countries. The application of clinical decision support systems (CDSS) casts light on this problem. However, given the great improvement in CDSS over the past several years, challenges to their wide-scale application are still present, including: 1) decision making of CDSS is complicated by the complexity of the data regarding human physiology and pathology, which could render the whole process more time-consuming by loading big data related to patients; and 2) information incompatibility among different health information systems (HIS) …

Technology Mergers And Acquisitions In The Presence Of An Installed Base: A Strategic Analysis, Qiu-Hong Wang, Kai-Lung Hui
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study the strategic benefits of M&A when competing IT vendors sell different generations of the same product with different quality. We assume the new product arrives unexpectedly when an installed base of old product exists. We show that the combination of consumers' purchase history and heterogeneity leads to new demand complexity that gives rise to innovative product strategies. We find that shelving the old product is an important motivation for M&A. The acquirer may exercise static or intertemporal price discrimination depending on whether it can exercise upgrade pricing. M&A may speed up or slow down new product consumption, and …

Geographically weighted regression (GWR) has been recognized in the assessment community as a viable automated valuation model (AVM) to help overcome, at least in part, modeling hurdles associated with location, such as spatial heterogeneity and spatial autocorrelation of error terms. Although previous researchers have adjusted the GWR weights matrix to also weight by time of sale or by structural similarity of properties in AVMs, the research described in this paper is the first that has done so by all three dimensions (i.e., location, structural similarity, and time of sale) simultaneously. Using 24 years of single-family residential sales in Fairfax, Virginia, …

Security breaches are prevalent in organizations and many of the breaches are attributed to human errors. As a result, the organizations need to increase their employees' security awareness and their capabilities to engage in safe cybersecurity behaviors. Many different psychological and social factors affect employees' cybersecurity behaviors. An important research question to explore is to what extent gender plays a role in mediating the factors that affect cybersecurity beliefs and behaviors of employees. In this vein, we conducted a cross-sectional survey study among employees of diverse organizations. We used structural equation modelling to assess the effect of gender as a …

They All Seem Good, But Which One Fits Me? Reducing Fit Uncertainty For Digital Entertainment Goods, Ai Phuong Hoang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Faster Internet connections and advanced streaming technologies have boosted the consumption of digital entertainment content. Nonetheless, many content providers are still struggling to differentiate their services and sell their offerings in the market, due to the large number of options available and customers’ uncertainty about the specific attributes of individual information goods. The providers employ different strategies to communicate information on the quality and fit of their products. In this research, I examine the effectiveness of sampling-based seller strategy on the marketing of digital entertainment goods. Using a large dataset on series drama on-demand, I show that content sampling plays …

Few would argue that the information technology department (ITD) is not an essential part of an organization. It is hard to envision a project that does not need the support of the ITD. Despite this importance, the ITD is not always involved in the management of projects. Often, the ITD is brought into the project late in the planning and development process. In many cases, the inclusion of the ITD in an advanced project stage can result in project failure where early involvement could have prevented it. Why is it that ITDs, while clearly a vital part of project implementation, …
