From “Defilement” To “Modernity”: How Japan's Encounter With The West Brought Beef To The Table, Ying Yi Tan
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The long Tokugawa – Meiji transition (1850s – 1880s) is arguably one of the most profound socio-economic transitions that Japan underwent in its history. This paper uses beef consumption in Japan as a lens to further investigate the players involved in this transition. Historically more eschewed than other types of meat and tightly associated with the notion of the “other,” beef became an embodiment of progress and modernity during the Meiji Period. Through tracing the historical shift in the Japanese perception of beef, this paper argues that the evolution of beef consumption corresponds to the radically shifting attitudes of the …

The purpose of this study was to identify which skills sport management student interns needed the most improvement, according to their intern supervisor. Using a single institution, this study analyzed intern supervisor’s questionnaire responses from 2017-2022 at a small, private college in …

Exploring Mean Reversion Dynamics In Financial Markets: Insights From Hurst Exponent Analysis, Shifa Hasan, Renu Ghosh
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
The current study investigates mean reversion and the speed of mean reversion within financial mar- kets at BSE 200 and NSE Nifty 200 for a data set of 20 years (2004–2024). It employs a variety of techniques, including traditional tests like the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Philips-Perron (PP) tests, as well as long-term dependency analysis using the Hurst exponent. The Ornstein-Uhlen- beck process facilitated the speed of mean reversion. Empirical data demonstrates that mean rever- sion processes exhibit Hurst exponent values less than 0.5, suggesting mean reverting behaviour. This signifies the importance of adopting long-term perspectives in decision-making and trading …

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
A reprint of a previous Journal column, Mr. Schulte discusses how unpaid internships require careful legal consideration. Interns must primarily benefit educationally from their tasks to avoid being classified as employees, necessitating compensation. Office work typically performed by employees must not be assigned to interns. Patient consent is required to observe dental procedures, and interns must receive HIPAA training. Exposure to hazardous materials should be avoided, adhering to laws like Michigan’s Occupational Safety and Health Act. The Yields That Bind: Treasury Bill Yields And The Philippine Corporate Bond Yield Spreads (Pre-Covid 2012–2019), Maurice Arce, Carlos Dorado, Justine Pascua, Paul Robles, Junette Perez
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The paper’s base reference is Duffee (1998). He examined the inverse relationship between the U.S. Treasury bill yields (TBY) and the corporate bond yield spreads (CBYS). Eight years of historical data on the Philippine CBYS from 2012–2019 and data on TBY were analyzed using OLS regression. To examine, if the results hold in the Philippines and given that the bond market in the country differs from the U.S. bond markets, will the results of Duffee (1998) persist? Although the paper focused on providing evidence on one of the most basic, well-established inverse relationships between TBY and inflation to CBYS, the …

Criticizing The Asset Repatriation Policy For Tax Amnesty In Indonesia: An Interpretive And Comparative Study, Nidya Hapsari
Jurnal Vokasi Indonesia
Indonesia finds tax amnesty as a reliable funding alternative to develop a sustainable economy. Since 1964, Indonesia has implemented five tax amnesty programs. The latest two programs would offer lower amnesty compensation rates if taxpayers repatriated offshore assets back to Indonesia. However, the tax amnesty repatriation policy merely contributed minimal amounts of repatriated assets and low number of participants. Consequently, it failed to raise sufficient liquidity, fiscal revenues, tax compliance and economic growth. Hence, the study aims to (1) determine the justification and mechanism for the asset repatriation policy and (2) criticize the repatriation policy implementation. Applying interpretive and comparative …

Resistance to chemotherapy remains a major challenge for colorectal cancer patients worldwide, hence the persistent need to uncover alternative treatments as well as new adjunct therapies in the fight against cancer. Natural extracts constitute an excellent source of bioactive substances that have a promising potential in that regard, with minimal negative side effects. We have previously demonstrated that both the ethanolic as well as the water extracts of Terfezia boudieri, a black desert truffle abundant in and part of the cuisine of the Mediterranean region, have significant antiproliferative effects against colon cancer cells. Our aim in this study was …

Social support has a positive influence on turnover intention, different from earlier findings, which may be due to the context of the Indonesian architecture sector. This study contributes to the literature by testing the sequential mediating relationships between resilience, social support, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. …
