Farm managers possess a broad spectrum of capabilities, ranging from tech-savvy, strategically focused managers to those grappling with operational challenges. Our study examines survey data from 403 US commercial producers in order to identify subsets of producers who differ in terms of resilience, management practices, producer sentiment, and other farm characteristics. Utilizing various supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, we uncover key farm characteristics that capture the most pronounced variations in survey responses. We then cluster the dataset using these key variables, maximizing separation between clusters and minimizing differences within clusters using Ward’s hierarchical clustering. Fisher’s exact tests are implemented …

Culling decisions within beef production systems are not reversible, and as such, data can help decision-makers double-check heuristics to avoid costly mistakes. In this essay, we use financial methods to examine cow culling decisions, evaluating their impact on overall herd profitability. To do so, we use production and financial data from 16 “typical farms” within the Canadian Cow-Calf Cost of Production Network to explore the financial impact of different culling strategies. This essay builds on prior literature by using Canadian data, as there may be differences in costs and productivity across production regions. We identify four culling scenarios that vary …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

The demand for air travel is increasing, and although the aviation industry only accounts for 2% to 3% of global emissions, it is a challenging industry to decarbonize (Ritchie, 2023). To assist with decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, US airports are transitioning to electric vehicles and electricpowered ground support equipment to reduce the environmental impact on the communities they serve. The Federal Aviation Administration provides grant incentives for airports to purchase zero-emissions vehicles, with the intention to reduce pollution in the communities they serve. Currently, many airports do not have the power generation capability or electrical infrastructure required to support the …

Rebuilding Possible: Pilgrimage And Learned Helplessness, Christianna Soumakis

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Learned helplessness is a belief in one’s own powerlessness which may develop after repeated exposure to stressful situations ranging from domestic abuse to public education. It is associated with pessimism, passivity in the face of obstacles, and depression. Pilgrimage, conversely, is associated with agency — striking out on one’s own in search of physical, emotional, cognitive, and / or spiritual transformation. Combining psychological literature with my personal experience as a pilgrim, special education student, artist, art facilitator for people with special needs, and professor, I argue that walking pilgrimages such as the Camino de Santiago offer a comprehensive opportunity to …
