Samsung Tesco is a representative company that is successfully enforcing ``sustainable management`` through creative, systematic corporate responsibility (CR). The concentration on CR is because of the fact that the modern society expects companies to do a role as a social citizen. For this reason, Samsung Tesco emphasizes that the cost of carrying on CR is an important factor in business which leads to a positive cycle in business, and accordingly is rather an investment than a cost. The reason why Samsung Tesco proclaimed its resolution to make best efforts on CR is because Samsung Tesco thinks CR is a necessary …

Negative Attitudes Toward U.S. Products: Malaysian Muslim Consumers' Perspective, Khairul Anuar Bin Mohammad Shah, Md Nor Othman Prof. Dr.

Consumer attitudes toward foreign products from various countries can vary significantly from one country to another. Consumer attitudes and behavioural intentions in a country can also vary overtime due to a change in the country's level of industrialization, marketing development, and lifestyle. Therefore, it is beneficial for this study to identify the attitudes of the consumers towards foreign products in a particular market. The sources of negative attitudes such as country of origin effects (Han, 1988), consumer ethnocentrism (Shimp and Sharma, 1987), and consumer animosity (Klein, Etteson, and Morries, 1998), are the factors that can influence the willingness of the …

Why Students Misbehave In Class: An Empirical Analysis Of Classroom Incivilities, Hilde Patron, Timothy O. Bisping

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Classroom incivilities are distracting to everyone involved in the learning process. Insight into the causes of these behaviors could potentially lead educators to successfully develop methods of reducing their prevalence. Many studies have discussed the causes and consequences of classroom behavior, though empirical evidence is lacking. In this paper we empirically examine the factors associated with six different types of student classroom incivilities using a sample of business students registered in principles of economics courses. Our experience demonstrates that, although each type of incivility has a unique set of determinants, some general conclusions can be drawn. First, though students and …

Do Popular People Perform?, Jonathan R. Anderson Oct 2008

Do Popular People Perform?, Jonathan R. Anderson

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Are popular people good performers? This is the driving question behind this study of workplace behavior and performance. The literature suggests that popular people, those who hold central positions in a social network, will also have high levels of individual work performance in a customer service setting (Hogans, 1971; Hurley, 1998; Stevens & Macintosh, 2002). However, after analyzing social network data from 128 employees in a call center, the data show that popular people, those holding a central role in the friendship network, are likely to underperform their colleagues in technical work and sales performance. Implications for employee selection and …

Commuting And Wages In The Black Hills Of South Dakota And Wyoming, Ron Debeaumont, Sheng-Ping Yang Oct 2008

Commuting And Wages In The Black Hills Of South Dakota And Wyoming, Ron Debeaumont, Sheng-Ping Yang

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

"This paper examines the effect commuting has on wages in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. As there is no major metropolitan area within commuting distance, commuting patterns are likely to differ from those found in and around large cities. Given these differences, prior research that has focused on national or metropolitan data may not be relevant to the region. The results suggest longer commutes are associated with higher pay, but the rate of compensation is significantly lower than estimates using metropolitan data. Furthermore, professionally qualified workers are not compensated for longer commutes. It is argued that professionally …

A Comparison Of Labor Arbitration Procedures In The U.S. And China, Yang Xinjiletu, Carl F. Jenks Purdue, Han Weihong

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

The purpose of this paper is threefold: 1) compare the labor arbitration procedures of the U.S. and China; 2) identify labor issues that may be problematic for China in the future; and 3) recommend how China may address future workplace problems in its emerging economy. It is generally accepted that American labor arbitration is not a perfect process, but it is a reasonable Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) Procedure. More importantly, it is less expensive than litigation, and it provides finality to workplace disputes. In the volatile industrial economy of China, one could reasonably expect that there is the potential for …

Development And Validation Of Two Versions Of The Student Prior Attitude Scale (Spa), James E. Weber, Gary Yoshimoto, James A. Smith, Howard W. Bohnen

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

It is not uncommon for students to have preconceptions of a class before it begins. These preconceptions may come from information about a class, often through word of mouth, or knowledge that the class requires skills inconsistent with the student’s skill set. These preconceptions of a class may have a positive or negative effect on how a student initially feels about the class, and may, in fact, have an effect on end-of-term student evaluations. Since student evaluations are often used for personnel decisions, it is vital that these evaluations be reliable and valid. This study reports on the development and …

The Profitability Of The Weekend Effect: Evidence From The Taiwan Mutual Fund Market, Mei-Chen Lin, Miawjane Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In this research we first investigated the day-of-the-week effect in the Taiwan mutual fund market. The results revealed significantly negative Monday returns and positive Friday returns. This weekend effect did not vary greatly between the early and later periods of the month. In the absence of transaction costs, weekend trading strategies, both simple and complex, can increase returns and moderate risk. Finally, the pattern triggered by macroeconomic news can only partially subsume the weekend effects of fund returns.

Profit Contribution Information’S Impact On Internal Integration, Scott J. Grawe, Haozhe Chen, Daniel D. Mattioda, Patricia J. Daugherty

Journal of Transportation Management

An exploratory quantitative study on the relationship between profit contribution information and firm-wide internal integration is presented. Specifically, the authors examine how profit contribution information availability impacts firm-wide internal integration and, subsequently, logistics performance. This study provides greater insight into the area; only a few studies have empirically examined the impact of profit contribution information within a firm. The primary implication is that firms should utilize specific types of information, i.e. profit contribution information, for making more informed operational and strategic decisions. The paper also underscores the managerial value of using profit contribution information in decision making and planning.

Moving Towards A Resilient Supply Chain, John Mascaritolo, Mary C. Holcomb Sep 2008

Moving Towards A Resilient Supply Chain, John Mascaritolo, Mary C. Holcomb

Journal of Transportation Management

The nature of supply chain management—global in scope, the existence of interdependent activities in the various processes, the need for collaborative relationships between members, and the uncertainty that is inherent in both supply and demand - makes it vulnerable to unexpected events that have the potential to disrupt operations as planned. Disruptions to the supply chain can have a profound effect on the firm ranging from loss of revenue to increased costs when operations don’t proceed as planned. Firms realized that it was critical to their business interests to proactively manage, and even mitigate, the risks that are inherent in …

Safety Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Of Municipal Waste Disposal Drivers, Swartz M. Stephen, Matthew A. Douglas Sep 2008

Safety Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Of Municipal Waste Disposal Drivers, Swartz M. Stephen, Matthew A. Douglas

Journal of Transportation Management

The Theory of Planned Behavior was used to study factors useful for predicting Behavioral Intentions to commit unsafe acts while driving for commercial drivers working for municipal waste management operations centers. The Theory of Planned Behavior was found to be moderately effective in predicting behavioral intentions, particularly through the constructs of Attitude and Perceived Control. Driver perceptions of safety climate, self-assessed personal safety performance, risk aversion, and attitudes toward behavioral factors associated with engaging in risky behaviors while operating motor vehicles were studied. Risk aversion and driver perception of their own safety performance were also useful predictors of intention.

The Effects Of Interdepartmental Customer Orientation On Distribution Center Performance, Nancy M. Scott, M Douglas Voss, Scott B. Keller, Matt Schlosser

Journal of Transportation Management

Firms have begun to look internally for ways to increase external service quality. ANOVA is used to examine the effect of interdepartmental customer orientation on time, inventory, and customer service-based performance variables in distribution centers. Findings indicate that high interdepartmental customer orientation positively affects distribution center performance in terms of time-based performance measures and customer satisfaction. Interdepartmental customer orientation was found to have only a marginal affect on inventory performance. Implications of the current research for distribution centers and transportation managers are discussed along with limitations and opportunities for future research.
