China Economic Research Programme (CERP) Research Report

本研究報告對於港資製造業這個領域的嶄新研究貢獻,主要歸結為以下幾個類別:

  1. 以多項第一手數據表明,並讓香港特區政府重新認識到港資製造業在「延外發展」模式經營下對香港整體經濟佔有非常重要帶動作用、貢獻和地位;
  2. 本報告通過挖掘包括國家工商總局在內的大數據方式,從而得出近年包括大灣區以至不同九個市在內的港資製造業企業數目、從業人員數目、註冊資本、營業利潤等的具體數字和變動情況;由於工商總局的註冊或登記數字的個案數比統計局的抽樣為主的統計數字更為具體,因而相關數字能夠更仔細的反映出港資製造業在大灣區內的經營情況,較具有參考價值;
  3. 本報告以大數據結合問卷調查、深入訪談等方式交叉分析,互補有無,能夠發現更多港資製造業企業對大灣區的經濟貢獻具體情況,有助外界尤其是特區政府和內地相關部委了解到港資企業特別是港資製造業對整個大灣區經濟的重要性,尤其港資製造業如何對專業服務業產生帶動作用,有助社會各界重新關注振興製造業和實現製造業轉型升級的重要性,從而推出更為切合實際的具體振興方案;
  4. 通過對不同企業和行業的深入訪談,可以令大家更為仔細了解港資製造業目前的經營情況、優勢所在和面對的挑戰,有助中小港資製造業企業借鑑相關經驗,從而發展壯大;

Unprecedented Disruption: Covid-19 Impact On San Diego Nonprofits, Laura Deitrick, Tessa Tinkler, Emily Young, Connelly Meschen, Colton Strawser, Taylor Funderburk, Tom Abruzzo

Nonprofit Sector Issues and Trends

Nonprofit organizations are often on the frontlines of crisis, serving as a critical partner to government in sustaining our community safety net and quality of life. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many local nonprofits are experiencing increased demands for services, yet have been hindered or completely cut off from responding due to stay at home orders, revenue loss, and physical distancing.

In an effort to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local nonprofits’ ability to meet their communities’ needs, The University of San Diego’s Nonprofit Institute has been surveying nonprofit leaders since March 2020.

Contrapower Sexual Harassment In Collegiate Athletic Administration, Nikki Coutsouros May 2020

Contrapower Sexual Harassment In Collegiate Athletic Administration, Nikki Coutsouros

Transformations: Presentation Slides

With the current climate of the #MeToo movement on Twitter, more and more individuals are speaking out about their experiences with sexual harassment. Given the male dominant culture of college athletics, there is a need now more than ever to examine how sexual harassment is occurring within collegiate athletic organizations. This study focuses specifically on contrapower sexual harassment, a type of harassment that occurs when a superior in an organizational hierarchy experiences sexual harassment by a subordinate. An online qualitative survey was sent out via email in a nationwide population study involving all NCAA, NJCAA and NAIA college athletic leagues. …

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship: A New National Economic Imperative, Marlene Orozco, Alfonso Morales, Michael J. Pisani, Jerry I. Porras Apr 2020

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship: A New National Economic Imperative, Marlene Orozco, Alfonso Morales, Michael J. Pisani, Jerry I. Porras

Purdue University Press Books

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship examines business formation and success among Latinos by identifying arrangements that enhance entrepreneurship and by understanding the sociopolitical contexts that shape entrepreneurial trajectories. While it is well known that Latinos make up one of the largest and fastest growing populations in the U.S., Latino-owned businesses are now outpacing this population growth and the startup business growth of all other demographic groups in the country.

The institutional arrangements shaping business formation are no level playing field. Minority entrepreneurs face racism and sexism, but structural barriers are not the only obstacles that matter; there are agentic barriers and …

The Impact Of Board Composition And Activity On Non-Performing Loans, Md Nurul Islam Apr 2020

The Impact Of Board Composition And Activity On Non-Performing Loans, Md Nurul Islam

2020 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity

This paper examines the impact of board composition and activity on bank non-performing loans (NPLs). The empirical evidence suggests that NPLs are negatively related to board independence, separation between the CEO and chairman roles, directors with financial expertise, and the frequency of committee meetings. Additionally, we find that, during the financial crisis period (2008–2009), a large board size and the presence of female directors may also help lower NPLs. The results support the hypothesis that shareholder-friendly bank boards and active boards are more effective monitors, and thus help lower bank’s NPLs.

Civicly Envolved Intership: Working On The Candidate Profile Screen, Patrick Hultquist '21 Apr 2020

Civicly Envolved Intership: Working On The Candidate Profile Screen, Patrick Hultquist '21

2020 Intern Reports

Going into any situation, I think I’m always a little overconfident. This was no exception. I had previously made an (unimpressive) app, had talked to people before, and knew how to work with a team; so this would be all the same, right?I thought going into this that I would probably do something around 80%working and 20% learning. The very first day I realized how wrong I was. I learned that in this internship, I was going to, well, learn. At first, I felt kind of bad; I mean, I knew barely anything and had to be taught from the …

My Internship With The State Representative: An Overview, Nathan Tamez '21

2020 Intern Reports

My name is Nathan Tamez, and I am a Junior (‘21) at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. I am currently thinking of going into Engineering (most likely Automotive or Mechanical). Honestly, I did not know what to expect when I signed up for the internship program, but what I heard from friends and the internship coordinators reassured me that there would be many opportunities to meet people with experience and to expand my network. Just as I expected, I was able to meet plenty of people, and even establish a connection with the Aurora Collective,a conjunction of businesses based …

Venture Capital And Marketing With K8 Ventures, Rosario Picone '21

2020 Intern Reports

K8 Ventures is a venture builder studio, with investments in a diverse range of industries. K8’sgreatest skill is developing companies in-house, starting at Stage 1, what they call “an idea written on a napkin,” to Stage 5, which is a successful business already established in the market. Because K8 is investing in early-stage companies, they typically are able to take a larger share of equity in their developing companies. This allows them to take a managerial role in the company, thus taking some of the traditional risks out of venture capital. Over the past year with K8, they have provided …

Safestart: Simplifying Technology For Seniors, Melissa Myint '21

2020 Intern Reports

Our project is nonprofit and aims to help seniors understand how to use technology in their daily lives by creating videos that are simple and easy to follow.As in this day and age seniors are afraid to use their smart devices other than the basic call function which can prevent seniors from receiving the benefits associated with the use of apps that could track their medication, allow them to video call, and etc. These seniors are therefore being left out from the increasing digital society. In order to accomplish this goal, we are creating instructional videos on the uses of …
