Educating The Auditors: Recommendations For Addressing General, Behavioral Competency Needs In Collegiate Accounting Programs, Charles T. Saunders

Learning Showcase 2014

The continuing evolution of the business world has a direct impact on the landscape and curriculum of higher education, where business professionals are trained. The needs of the business world influence not only what is taught (i.e., business curriculum content), but also how we, as educators, teach foundational skills and core competencies.

Recent research published by the Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation suggests that there is a discrepancy between stakeholders’ and auditors’ perceptions of internal auditor competency levels and value to the organization. The survey identified the following four competencies with the lowest ratings overall:

  1. Conflict Resolution/Negotiation Skills;
  2. Business …

Ethical Leadership: Creating Ethical Organizations, Alexander C. Heckman Nov 2014

Ethical Leadership: Creating Ethical Organizations, Alexander C. Heckman

Learning Showcase 2014

Many scholars examine this issue primarily from an individual perspective and in abstract or stylistic manner in which the leader serves as sort of an ethical judge making a ruling.

This poster examines the issue of ethical leadership from an organizational and practical perspective where a leader must think systemically about how to create an ethical organization. In doing so, the leader has to think like an engineer who takes action to design organizational structures that shape and direct action systematically in order to help create an ethical environment. The author applies systems thinking and uses the McKinsey 7-S to …

Mandated Personal Finance Education, Martina Peng, Souren Soumbatiants

Learning Showcase 2014

The urgency of implementation of financial literacy education has been recognized in the recent years. This study evaluates the recent progress on state financial literacy legislation and the effectiveness of personal finance education mandates in high schools. The three common approaches to the mandatory personal finance education policy take forms in setting education standards, personal finance courses, and required testing. Course mandates appear to be the most effective in raising financial literacy scores. State policy requiring testing personal finance concepts has been the least effective. The findings of this study have important implications for policymakers, educators and researchers considering personal …

From Zen To C-Level, Carie Martin

Learning Showcase 2014

From the non-stop pull of smart phones to overcommitted working parents, the average American worker is constantly plugged in and on the go. Such a cognitive overload can have dire consequences. These consequences include: memory and concentration problems; hostility and aggression; anxiety; and poor judgment (Smith, 2014). These effects of overload most certainly decrease the effectiveness of work productivity. To get the best out of their employees, restoring their wellbeing and re-engaging them at work should be of value to organizations across the country.

Being mindful can increase wellbeing and engagement in activities along with improving concentration. Mindfulness also decreases …

From there his career moved from McKinsey and Company, to Bain Capital, where he was managing director for 16 years, and then co-founder and CEO of Huntsman Gay Global Capital.

Something In The Water??, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business

Jon M. Huntsman School of Business News Collection

There is a huge shortage of Ph.D.s in accounting. According to studies by the American Accounting Association the average accounting professor is now unbelievably 60 years old. Very few people are electing to pursue the rigorous and lengthy trail toward that degree, and we don’t have a Vietnam-type war that young people are trying to defer joining (perhaps a bit of hint about the 60-year olds).

Why Primary Care Practices Should Become Digital Health Information Hubs For Their Patients, Aaron Baird, Samantha Nowak Nov 2014

Why Primary Care Practices Should Become Digital Health Information Hubs For Their Patients, Aaron Baird, Samantha Nowak

Computer Information Systems Faculty Publications

Background: Two interesting health care trends are currently occurring: 1) patient-facing technologies, such as personal health records, patient portals, and mobile health apps, are being adopted at rapid rates, and 2) primary care, which includes family practice, is being promoted as essential to reducing health care costs and improving health care outcomes. While these trends are notable and commendable, both remain subject to significant fragmentation and incentive misalignments, which has resulted in significant data coordination and value generation challenges. In particular, patient-facing technologies designed to increase care coordination, often fall prey to the very digital fragmentation issues they are supposed …

Market Opportunities For Western Australian Mandarins And Oranges, Manju Radhakrishnan Nov 2014

Market Opportunities For Western Australian Mandarins And Oranges, Manju Radhakrishnan

Bulletins 4000 -

Citrus growing in Western Australian (WA) is concentrated north and south of Perth and in the north around Kununurra and Carnarvon. WA currently produces about 18 000 tonnes (t) of citrus each year. Most production is sold on the local Perth market, with negligible exports. State production is expected to grow from 18 000t in 2014 to 35 000t by 2015 as large plantings come into full production (DAFWA). If local consumption and processing grow only modestly, the WA industry seeks to replace current supply of mandarins and oranges from interstate with WA product as well as identify export opportunities …

2014 Program, Office Of Academic Affairs

At its best, a university is a collection of individuals ‐‐ students and faculty ‐‐ focused on learning and discovering new knowledge. For this goal to be realized, a critical element is having faculty members deeply engaged in such discovery within their disciplines. Scholarship, in the form of journal articles, book chapters, monographs and similar endeavors, creative activity which can take an even wider range of forms, and funded research which explores the boundaries of disciplines all contribute to such engagement. Through such participation, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich …
