We recently received notification that our own Lucien Butler has been selected as this year’s National Medal of Inspiration Award winner. This award is co-sponsored by the Beta Alpha Psi organization and the AICPA with a $5,000 cash award funded by the AICPA with only one annual recipient. State of Nonprofits and Philanthropy in San Diego

For the second consecutive year, the State of Nonprofits Annual Report chronicles the capacity, contributions, and overall economic health and well-being of the San Diego nonprofit sector over time.

It also documents the current state of the nonprofit sector in San Diego County based on perspectives of local nonprofit leaders in 2013.

The findings presented in this report are a culmination of various sources and represent different perspectives. Together, they help tell the story of the nonprofit sector in San Diego County (subsequently referred to as San Diego).

Professor Frank Shuman has been selected to receive the Ursel K. Albers IMA Campus Advocate of the Year Award, a national award given to an outstanding IMA faculty advisor. Frank was selected for this award because of his significant contributions to IMA student members and IMA overall. The USU chapter of IMA has received many prestigious awards during the 18 years Frank has been the faculty advisor. He will be recognized at the IMA Annual Meeting in Minneapolis in June. Congratulations Frank!

In Jill Abramson's Firing, Was The 'Glass Cliff' To Blame?, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business, Alison Cook, Christy Glass

Our research on CEOs in the Fortune 500 finds that women leaders face two significant challenges: the “glass cliff” and the “savior effect”. First, we find that women are more likely than men to be appointed CEO to struggling firms or firms in crisis. This phenomenon is termed the “glass cliff” because it suggests that when women are appointed to top positions these positions are often precarious or risky. Second, we find that when firms struggle under the leadership of women CEOs, these leaders are likely to be replaced by men. We term this phenomenon the “savior effect” because when …

Huntsman Alumnus Receives Nsf Graduate Research Fellowship, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business, Klydi Heywood

Chris Martin, BA in Economics and Finance, ’11, MS in Economics, '13, was recently awarded the 2014 National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship. This year there were more than 14,000 applications submitted and only 2,000 were offered the fellowship. Martin will benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $32,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct his own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education. Martin is currently in the PhD program at the University of Washington.

The final stage in the Utah Entrepreneur Series, the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, is one of the largest business plan competitions in the nation. This April five out of nine challenge prizes were awarded to two Huntsman students’ businesses.

The Huntsman School of Business graduated 1,101 students with 676 at the undergraduate commencement ceremony in Logan on May 5, and 284 earning graduate degrees. The Huntsman Program in China graduated 141 of the undergraduate students.

Huntsman alumni Craig Morris and Nate Bradshaw knew that Snap would be a success at first glance. The Snap product was originally invented by Eric Child, whose recent invention Fiber fix was featured on ABC’s Shark Tank, but who did not have the time capacity to fully promote the product. With Child’s permission to promote the product, Morris and Bradshaw teamed up with students Spencer Bailey and Kathryn Young, and launched the following Indiegogo campaign.
