An Investigation Of The Factors That Influence Electronic Information Sharing Between State And Local Agencies, Asli Yagmur Akbulut Jan 2003

An Investigation Of The Factors That Influence Electronic Information Sharing Between State And Local Agencies, Asli Yagmur Akbulut

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the factors that influence local government participation in electronic information sharing with state agencies. Although electronic information sharing has the potential to help government agencies to increase productivity and performance, improve policy-making and provide better public services to the citizens, there is still little information available about the factors that antecede electronic information sharing between local and state agencies. Synthesizing the pertinent literature on interagency information sharing and well-established theories such as diffusion of innovations theory, critical mass theory and social exchange theory, this study proposes that local government participation in electronic information sharing with state agencies …

Agronomic And Molecular Characterization Of Louisiana Native Spartina Alterniflora Accessions, Alicia Beatriz Ryan Jan 2003

Agronomic And Molecular Characterization Of Louisiana Native Spartina Alterniflora Accessions, Alicia Beatriz Ryan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coastal erosion and wetland deterioration are serious and widespread problems affecting Louisiana’s coastal zone. The application of agronomic and molecular techniques for improving crop species is well documented. However, these have not been routinely applied to species of ecological and environmental value. Spartina alterniflora is used extensively for shoreline protection and tidal marsh restoration because of its aggressive spreading habit and tolerance to salinity. The progress of marsh revegetation projects is limited by the costs and labor associated with vegetative propagation of Spartina. Hence, a breeding program was initiated to develop improved smooth cordgrass accessions with superior seed producing ability …

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?: A Modular Systems Perspective Of It Infrastructure Design And Productivity, Pratim Datta Jan 2003

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?: A Modular Systems Perspective Of It Infrastructure Design And Productivity, Pratim Datta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Assessing value of IT infrastructure investments has been both difficult and ambiguous. This research develops and tests a conceptual framework to understand the productivity process. A lagged and recursive framework is used to trace the relationship between IT infrastructure investments, infrastructure design, and organizational productivity along with contingencies of IT management and the environment. A major contribution of this study is the use of the systems perspective to disaggregate the concepts of IT infrastructure and productivity into collectively exhaustive types. Findings reveal that IT investments do not significant affect productivity but do so when used to develop an IT infrastructure …

Two Essays On Corporate Hedging: The Choice Of Instruments And Methods, Pinghsun Huang Jan 2003

Two Essays On Corporate Hedging: The Choice Of Instruments And Methods, Pinghsun Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines corporate use of derivative instruments and multi-period hedging methods. It studies the use of linear (e.g. futures) and nonlinear (e.g. options) derivatives in a sample of 382 U.S. non-financial firms (920 firm-year observations) between 1992 and 1996. It also measures the performance of stacked hedge techniques with applications to three investment assets (heating oil, light crude oil, and unleaded gasoline) and to three commercial commodities (British Pound, Deutsche Mark, and Swiss Franc). In a stacked hedge, corporations hedge the long-term exposures by repeatedly rolling nearby futures contracts until settlement. Analyzing the 382 firms, I find that both …

Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall Jan 2002

Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study focuses on current faculty attitudes and perceptions of distance education. A thorough review of literature indicates that faculty members are critical elements of distance education delivery and that certain factors (tenure, departmental incentives, gender, age) influence faculty participation. The main hypothesis being investigated is whether or not the analytical nature of the course is in fact the prime indicator in faculty participation. Faculty members from three randomly chosen SREB member institutions were surveyed. The purpose for choosing SREB member institutions for the population was for generalizing the findings to higher education institutions throughout the Southeastern United States. The …

Pay Satisfaction Consequences : Development And Test Of A Theoretical Model, Larry Hugh Faulk Ii Jan 2002

Pay Satisfaction Consequences : Development And Test Of A Theoretical Model, Larry Hugh Faulk Ii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The considerable research examining pay satisfaction over the past thirty years has focused on antecedents and the conceptualization of the construct. Notably little attention has been given to pay satisfaction consequences. This dissertation incorporates organizational justice literature to develop a model of pay satisfaction consequences and then shows the effect of pay satisfaction on job performance, turnover intentions, organizational commitment, and other variables. Two typologies are created to explain the relationship between pay satisfaction dimensions and consequences. One typology classifies the dimensions of pay satisfaction according to their form and what type of exchange is created with the organization. The …

Three Essays On Real Estate Research, Ming-Long Lee Jan 2002

Three Essays On Real Estate Research, Ming-Long Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of essays relating to the three important real estate research topics: spatial statistics, mortgages, and real estate investment trusts (REITs). In the first essay, “Spatial Distribution of Retail Sales,” we apply retail gravity models to examine the spatial distribution of retail sales for a retail chain in the Houston market. Unlike previous empirical studies, our study models both the spatial dependencies among both consumers and retailers. Our results show both the spatial dependencies have significant impacts on the estimates of parameters in retail gravity models. Contrary to the suggestions of Guitschi (1981) as well as Eppli and …

The Impact Of Institutional Stock Ownership On A Firm's Earnings Management Practice: An Empirical Investigation, Santanu Mitra Jan 2002

The Impact Of Institutional Stock Ownership On A Firm's Earnings Management Practice: An Empirical Investigation, Santanu Mitra

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines whether institutional investor shareholdings inhibit firm managers from engaging in earnings management practice. It investigates the empirical association between discretion/flexibility available to managers in managing abnormal non-cash working capital accruals and institutional stock ownership for a sample of 386 New York Stock Exchange firms over a period of 8 years, from 1991 through 1998. The differential institutional influence on the level of accrual management of firms having different information environment, S&P 500 versus non S&P 500, is also examined to see whether the difference in information environment of these two sets of firms has any effect on …

Markov Models To Estimate And Describe Survival Time And Experience In Cohorts With High Euthanasia Frequency, Giselle Louise Hosgood Jan 2002

Markov Models To Estimate And Describe Survival Time And Experience In Cohorts With High Euthanasia Frequency, Giselle Louise Hosgood

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unique to survival analysis of veterinary clinical data is classification of observations from euthanized animals. The first study highlighted limitations of Kaplan-Meier product limit analysis (KM) of veterinary clinical data. Three data sets with different outcome proportions (alive, lost-to-follow-up, dead due to disease, dead due to other, euthanized due to disease, euthanized due to other) were used. Different classifications of observations from euthanized animals caused inconsistent conclusions of significant differences between strata within data sets. At times, ranking of median survival time estimates for strata was reversed. The KM was found inappropriate to evaluate observations from euthanized animals. This finding, …

Essays On Endowment Fund Management, Kurtay N. Ogunc Jan 2002

Essays On Endowment Fund Management, Kurtay N. Ogunc

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The debate around the perpetual nature of endowment funds from the perspective of current versus future obligations is a major problem that I would like to address in two ways: (i) a macro-level treatment of the simultaneous asset allocation and spending rate with subsistence levels (analogous to the habit formation concept); and (ii) a micro-level analysis of one part of the endowment portfolio with a particular emphasis on the currency hedging decision. The purpose of the third chapter is to illustrate the significance of joint determination of appropriate asset allocation and spending rate decisions, and to describe the behavior of …

The Effects Of Strategic Corporate Philanthropy On Consumer Perceptions: An Experimental Assessment, Joe M. Ricks, Jr. Jan 2002

The Effects Of Strategic Corporate Philanthropy On Consumer Perceptions: An Experimental Assessment, Joe M. Ricks, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There are many objectives for corporate philanthropic activity beyond altruism. Financial gain, increased image, and thwarting negative publicity have been suggested as potential objectives for corporate giving. This dissertation develops a 2X2 classification schema as a framework for empirical investigation and managerial decision making. Additionally this dissertation examines current models of corporate philanthropy and develops a new model for the use of philanthropy in crisis management using stakeholder theory. Finally it presents experimental assessments of various types of philanthropy based on the classification schema. Philanthropic activity is assessed in the context of two controlled experiments. The first experiment examines the …

The Influence Of The Use Of Recommended Management Practices On Milk Production In Southeast Louisiana, Ronald David Bardwell Jan 2002

The Influence Of The Use Of Recommended Management Practices On Milk Production In Southeast Louisiana, Ronald David Bardwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The dairy industry in Southeast Louisiana is one of the largest agricultural industries, with a gross farm value of over 74 million dollars. Much of the economy of Southeast Louisiana parishes depends on the dairy industry. Therefore, improvements in production efficiency and/or effectiveness would have an enormous impact on the parish economy. This study identifies the use of recommended practices by dairy producers, thus allowing educational programs to be focused on specific areas of greatest need. The purpose of the study was to describe the management practices of Southeast Louisiana dairy producers and to determine if a relationship existed between …

For A Good Cause : The Effects Of Cause Important, Cause Proximity, Congruency And Participation Effort On Consumers' Evaluation Of Cause Related Marketing, Stacy Landreth Jan 2002

For A Good Cause : The Effects Of Cause Important, Cause Proximity, Congruency And Participation Effort On Consumers' Evaluation Of Cause Related Marketing, Stacy Landreth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the past several years, companies have discovered the importance of strategic social alliances, particularly in the form of cause related marketing (CRM) programs. Varadarajan and Menon (1988) describe the key feature of CRM as is that the firm’s contribution is linked to consumers’ engagement in revenue producing transactions with the firm. It is essentially a way for a firm to “do well by doing good” and provides several benefits to both the firm and the non-profit organizations receiving the donations. In general, academic researchers have found favorable consumer attitudes toward the firm, products and the non-profit organization involved. Consumers …

Lmx Dyad Agreement: Construct Definition And The Role Of Supervisor/Subordinate Similarity And Communication In Understanding Lmx, Barbara Dale Minsky Jan 2002

Lmx Dyad Agreement: Construct Definition And The Role Of Supervisor/Subordinate Similarity And Communication In Understanding Lmx, Barbara Dale Minsky

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Much LMX research is predicated upon the assumption that the quality of the supervisor-subordinate relationship is predictive of important organizational and individual outcomes. I propose, however, that leader-member agreement in perception about the nature of the relationship as well as the type of relationship itself is important. I have identified and examined some of the theoretically relevant determinants of leader and member perceptual agreement regarding the nature of their LMX relationship. I hypothesized that relational demography, values, perceived similarity, communication, feedback, and role clarity are related to LMX perceptual agreement. Data was collected through surveys personally administered to employees at …
