Faculty Publications

The growing importance of brand equity is widely recognized by researchers and business strategists alike. As such, creative new ways to capture the value of this intangible asset must be devised and tested. The current study uses acquired goodwill as a surrogate indicator of brand equity and looks at the importance of brand equity for firms in the health services industry by measuring the impact of acquired goodwill on stockholder returns. The findings indicate that acquired goodwill and stockholder returns appear to be significantly and positively related to each other. In addition, firms that have higher than average amounts of …

Making Standards Stick: A Theory Of Coupled Vs. Decoupled Compliance, Kurt Sandholtz May 2012

Making Standards Stick: A Theory Of Coupled Vs. Decoupled Compliance, Kurt Sandholtz

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an inductive account of how two divisions of the same corporation sought to standardize their engineering work. Although both groups achieved ISO 9000 certification, each was guided by historical antecedents and internal processes that left different legacies: a culture of cynicism and chaotic work practices in one division vis-a-vis a system of standardized work practices that are voluntarily (and often enthusiastically) followed in the other. The contrasting cases shed light on what happens when an external standard is adopted by an organization, converted into a formal directive, and then confronted by the norms and practices of an …

How Do Start-Ups Obtain Their Legal Services?, Darian M. Ibrahim Mar 2012

How Do Start-Ups Obtain Their Legal Services?, Darian M. Ibrahim

Faculty Publications

This essay presents the first empirical study of how rapid-growth start-up companies obtain their legal services, with particular attention to the choice between in-house and outside counsel. Drawing on responses to online surveys of venture-capital-backed start-ups formed between 2006 and 2008, the study tests several hypotheses rooted in economic and entrepreneurship literature. The results show that most start-ups do not employ in-house counsel, with cost considerations and broader coverage offered by outside firms emerging as the primary reasons. In contrast, start-ups that do hire in-house counsel cite their attorneys’ superior understanding of the business, responsiveness, and ability to monitor internal …

The Globalization Of Chinese Enterprises, Christoph Lattemann, Ilan Alon, Marc Fetscherin, John Mcintyre, Julian Chang

Faculty Publications

The question of how and why Chinese firms globalize is one of the most pressing issues for businesses today. China's globalization process is nothing less than remarkable. The twenty-first century will feature a developing country as the leader of the global economy by 2020, when, by most estimates, China's purchasing power parity (PPP) gross domestic product (GDP) surpasses America's. With China's new role on the world's stage, global economic and political institutions are likely to change. China's foray into Latin America, for example, has changed the traditional role that America has played in its “backyard.” While the Chinese government was …

Smartphones are having a transformational effect on the way that users access, use, and store information. Smartphones have essentially blurred the line of what is considered a phone, becoming the pinnacle multi-tasking devices of today’s world. Current smartphones have their own dedicated operating system, Bluetooth capabilities, GPS, WiFi, constant network connection, PC connectivity, and are internet enabled, leading them to have similar security risks as that of a computer. Businesses are now worrying about the information employees are storing on these devices and want to find new ways to protect it (Schiller, 2011). Advertising Budget And Sales Paths Under The Dynamics Of The Student Work Control Problem And Regularity Requirements, Aharon Hibshoosh Jan 2012

Advertising Budget And Sales Paths Under The Dynamics Of The Student Work Control Problem And Regularity Requirements, Aharon Hibshoosh

Faculty Publications

Consider a firm promoting a product in a fast expanding industry by using advertising as its single promotional tool. The firm's objective is to minimize the overall cost of advertising necessary for reaching certain target sales of the product by the end of a given planning period. We adopt the Student Work Control problem (SWC) framework for modeling this marketing context, in general, and the advertising-sales response function, in particular. We compare the SWC's optimal control budgeting principle with the solutions of equally effective, alternative advertising budgeting principles, which require strong regularity conditions on the path of either the advertising …

A Study Of Visual Puffery In Fragrance Advertising: Is The Message Sent Stronger Than The Actual Scent?, Mark Toncar, Marc Fetscherin

Faculty Publications

Purpose - This paper investigates visual exaggerations of fragrance advertisements by comparing subjects’ expectations resulting from print ads to their subsequent product evaluations. It then considers whether the actual scents fall short, meet or exceed these expectations.

Design/methodology/approach - By means of a semiotic analysis we capture the corresponding literary attributes of the ads to develop adjective pairs describing the meaning of the ads. Interviews are conducted to assess the meaning that consumers draw from the fragrance ads and we supplement these findings by performing a blind olfactory product evaluation of the fragrances. Paired sample t-tests are used to compare …

Analysis Of Firm Risk Around S&P 500 Index Changes., Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study we extend the work of Vijh (1994), barberis, Schleifer and Wurgler (2005), Denis, McConnell, Ovtchinnikov and Yu (2003) and Geppert, Ivanov and Karel (2011) by examining the effect of the addition to or deletion from the S&P 500 Index on the firm's Fama - French four factor model loadings before and after the event. We find that added to and deleted from the S&p 500 Index firms experience unique sensitivity to the small cap minus Big cap (SMB) and momentum (UMD) factors. this finding and robustness tests indicate that addition to and deletion from the S&P 500 …

Analysis Of Bank Performance In California And The Rest Of The Twelfth Federal Reserve District, Stoyu Ivanov Jan 2012

Analysis Of Bank Performance In California And The Rest Of The Twelfth Federal Reserve District, Stoyu Ivanov

Faculty Publications

In this study I examine the performance and sensitivity of performance to macro factors of banks headquartered in California and banks headquartered in the rest of the states in the Twelfth Federal Reserve District. I find that prior to the financial crisis which started in the fourth quarter of 2007 the non-California banks outperformed California banks; however, towards the end of the financial crisis California banks outperformed non-California banks. I also find higher macro factor sensitivities of non-California banks indicating more macro risk carried by these institutions. The higher risk explains the superior performance in expansions and underperformance in recessions …

The Effects Of Digital Intensity On Combinations Of Sequential And Configural Process Variety, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen, Youngjin Yoo, Brian Pentland Jan 2012

The Effects Of Digital Intensity On Combinations Of Sequential And Configural Process Variety, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen, Youngjin Yoo, Brian Pentland

Faculty Publications

Two forms of variety have been noted in organizational processes: sequential and configural. These describe variations in how a work process is ordered (sequential) or what is involved in enacting each work activity (configural). Each has been mainly studied in isolation. In organizations, these two types of variety are always co-present and scholars will miss important insights if their dependencies and interactions are not examined. This calls for theorizing and empirical inquiries regarding how these two types of variety are related and how digitalization influences them. Our contribution in this paper is to call attention to the need to analyze …

Exploring The Role Of Pseudodeductibles In Auto Insurance Claims Reporting, Dana A. Kerr Phd Jan 2012

Exploring The Role Of Pseudodeductibles In Auto Insurance Claims Reporting, Dana A. Kerr Phd

Faculty Publications

Many who purchase insurance understand that by reporting covered losses to their insurers they increase the chances of future premium increases or reductions in insurance coverage. If under such circumstances a policyholder decides not to report an otherwise covered loss, the policyholder is effectively displaying the presence of a “pseudodeductible.” That is, given a covered loss occurs, a policyholder may define a personal and unobservable threshold that is greater than any stated deductible in the policy below which an insurance claim for the loss will not be reported. The scant amount of empirical research on this topic suffers from a lack …

Using An Elaboration Likelihood Approach To Better Understand The Persuasiveness Of Website Privacy Assurance Cues For Online Consumers, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Gregory D. Moody, Anthony Vance, Matthew Jensen, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Taylor Michael Wells Jan 2012

Using An Elaboration Likelihood Approach To Better Understand The Persuasiveness Of Website Privacy Assurance Cues For Online Consumers, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Gregory D. Moody, Anthony Vance, Matthew Jensen, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Taylor Michael Wells

Faculty Publications

Privacy concerns can greatly hinder consumers’ intentions to interact with a website. The success of a website therefore depends on its ability to improve consumers’ perceptions of privacy assurance. Seals and assurance statements are mechanisms often used to increase this assurance; however, the findings of the extant literature regarding the effectiveness of these tools are mixed. We propose a model based on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) that explains conditions under which privacy assurance is more or less effective, clarifying the contradictory findings in previous literature. We test our model in a free-simulation online experiment, and the results of the …

Misvaluing Innovation, Lauren Cohen, Karl B. Diether, Christopher Malloy Jan 2012

Misvaluing Innovation, Lauren Cohen, Karl B. Diether, Christopher Malloy

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate that a firm’s ability to innovate is predictable, persistent, and relatively simple to compute, and yet the stock market ignores the implications of past successes when valuing future innovation. We show that two firms that invest the exact same in research and development (R&D) can have quite divergent, but predictably divergent, future paths. Our approach is based on the simple premise that while future outcomes associated with R&D investment are uncertain, the past track records of firms may give insight into their potential for future success. We show that a long-short portfolio strategy that takes advantage of the …
