Public Opinion Of The Sec’S Proposal For Mandatory Climate Disclosures, Isaac Blanchette Jan 2023

Public Opinion Of The Sec’S Proposal For Mandatory Climate Disclosures, Isaac Blanchette

Honors Theses and Capstones

In 2022, the Security and Exchange Commission created a proposal that would make climate risk disclosures mandatory for publicly traded companies. This paper aims to understand how Congress is likely to vote on the proposal as well as how students at the University of New Hampshire perceive the proposal. Using publicly available comment letters made by members of Congress in response to the proposal and extrapolating the responses of the other representatives, it is unlikely that the proposal will have enough support to be ratified. However, a survey conducted with students at the University of New Hampshire showed that the …

More specifically, what drives consumers to buy eco-friendly products on social media? Does the sustainability focus of the influencer matter for product endorsement? And along with that, does there need to be a match between the sustainability focus of both the product and the influencer? The results of this …

Honors Theses and Capstones

The world of investing is rapidly changing as technologies advance. In the past few years especially, we have seen many investors shifting toward decentralized digital money, or what is known as cryptocurrencies. Even with these new asset classes coming out, there has always been one commodity that has stuck around. Gold has been used as a store of value for millenniums. Investors tend to rely on gold because it’s believed to be a safe-haven asset, in times of economic uncertainty. This paper aims to determine whether or not this traditional mindset is still effective in today’s ever-changing investment environment. To …

Should Cryptocurrency And Nft’S Be Used As Collateral?, John M. Helmanis

Honors Theses and Capstones

Nothing has captured the attention of modern finance quite like cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFT), whether it’s the massive skyrocketing price or the next day's sudden drop wiping out millions of dollars seemingly overnight. This paper seeks to understand cryptocurrencies and NFT's position in modern finance in terms of collateral. Specifically, the question that will be answered is should cryptocurrencies and NFTs be used as collateral? This question has relevance because widespread use as collateral would signify validation as an asset class that holds value. Some cryptocurrency brokers are making loans backed by cryptocurrency, but currently, no major banks are …

Finding The Best Predictors For Foot Traffic In Us Seafood Restaurants, Isabel Paige Beaulieu Jan 2022

Finding The Best Predictors For Foot Traffic In Us Seafood Restaurants, Isabel Paige Beaulieu

Honors Theses and Capstones

COVID-19 caused state and nation-wide lockdowns, which altered human foot traffic, especially in restaurants. The seafood sector in particular suffered greatly as there was an increase in illegal fishing, it is made up of perishable goods, it is seasonal in some places, and imports and exports were slowed. Foot traffic data is useful for business owners to have to know how much to order, how many employees to schedule, etc. One issue is that the data is very expensive, hard to get, and not available until months after it is recorded. Our goal is to not only find covariates that …

Realtime Event Detection In Sports Sensor Data With Machine Learning, Mallory Cashman Jan 2022

Realtime Event Detection In Sports Sensor Data With Machine Learning, Mallory Cashman

Honors Theses and Capstones

Machine learning models can be trained to classify time series based sports motion data, without reliance on assumptions about the capabilities of the users or sensors. This can be applied to predict the count of occurrences of an event in a time period. The experiment for this research uses lacrosse data, collected in partnership with SPAITR - a UNH undergraduate startup developing motion tracking devices for lacrosse. Decision Tree and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models are trained and perform with high success rates. These models improve upon previous work in human motion event detection and can be used a reference …

Understanding Secret Consumer Purchases And Their Effects On Brands, Jenna M. Peterson Jan 2021

Understanding Secret Consumer Purchases And Their Effects On Brands, Jenna M. Peterson

Honors Theses and Capstones

Relationships created between brands and consumers are very important to establish loyalty and ensure repeat purchases. Our research examines the different ways that brands can help consumers keep their purchases a secret and how these methods help to develop relationships with the consumers. We also examine how the different secrecy methods affect feelings linked to the brand, such as, guilt, satisfaction, and more. We hypothesize that the secrecy methods which lead a consumer to feelings of guilt will directly correlate with feelings of dissatisfaction with their purchase and a higher connection with the brand. We find that although consumers link …
