In this panel discussion we look at the evolution of new forms of business models in emerging economies in light of institutional voids and the opportunities those voids afford. Specifically, this session looks at the case of successful multinationals in three emerging markets India, China and Brazil. We explore the manner in which top management was able to create new business models that take advantage of the institutional voids in these markets. We analyze the evolution of these business model through the concept of sense making (Weick, 1995). Finally we propose a model of business model innovation in emerging markets.

This longitudinal action research study describes how a 50 person management staff, led by a committed CEO, was able successfully implement a team strategy to achieve a radical change from nonprofit hospital to a for profit organization over a 12 year period. Many of the issues addressed and practical steps taken to establish a team based leadership model for the new organizational template are described. Organizational development assessment, diagnosis, and intervention phases, along with specific practices and processes to establish a team based leadership model are described.

Generally governments in developing economies work towards encouraging enterprise growth as the engine to increase national wealth and higher standards of living. In terms of the form of enterprise, some countries favor public or public-private partnerships, while others favor private enterprise primarily. The smaller the economy the more likely it is that the government will be involved in promoting the growth of enterprises. Using the consumer socialization theory and traditional models of consumer behavior, we formulate an integrative model representing the influences of religious affiliation and religiosity on consumer behavior, through modeling, reinforcement and social interaction. We analyze religion as religious denomination that includes a system of symbols that produces a system or values and norms, influencing conceptions of life. The study focuses on the concept of religiosity, in terms of individual level of spiritual commitment or religious affiliation. This paper examines the strategic aspects of innovation for business technology companies and how this impacts corporate performance. Using snowball sampling, a national survey was conducted among experienced marketing managers. Several industry sectors participated: communications, computers, consulting, energy, media/publishing, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and research/ information firms. This paper combines academic and practical insights to shed new light on how successful managers are in innovation activities and processes in B2B technology organizations. We examined similarities and differences in generational values and value orientation of 4,952 working adults in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico as compared to those of US Hispanics. US Hispanics demonstrated a primary value orientation of High Social/High Moral that is different from the four Latin American countries but closer to respondents from Argentina and Brazil. Values of generations across countries were more similar than values between generations in each country. Additionally, generational value schema was more similar in Latin American countries than in the US. Implications of these findings, study limitations and recommendations for further research are also discussed.

The objective of this research was to explore tourists' practices in Thailand duringthe demonstrations in terms of security, information and tourists' perceptionsabout the political problems. The study was limited to the Bangkok area, which is surrounded by many important institutions including the main international airport, Suvarnabhumi, which was shut down by the protesters. Using a random sampling process, the respondents were 200 male and female tourists of various nationalitieswhowere presentduring the demonstrations. Responses were gathered in tourist areas such as Bangkok, Sukhumvit, Kaosan Road, Suwannaphumi Airport, and Silom Road. The findings showed that the demonstrations have short-term negative effects on …

A New Look At The Role Of Management History In The Management Curriculum, Jane Whitney Gibson, Regina A. Greenwood, Edward Francis Murphy, David Andrew Lamond

We replicate surveys from 1989 and 1997 to examine the role of management history in the management curriculum. Respondents were members of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management. Our findings indicate that management history is not often a part of the curriculum, most management history courses rely on Wren and Bedeian’s Evolution of Management History (2009), and most respondents believe that more management history should be in the curriculum, as a separate course and within courses. We also discuss the value of management history and present suggestions for making that value more apparent.

The management styles of people are influenced by their cultural contexts and urgency of completing tasks. For example, it is expected that people will get things done in a speedy manner when their jobs are on the line, but they will still try to minimize the negative impact to their relationships. To explore the leadership tendencies of working adults in the Pakistani workplace, this paper focused on comparing the leadership orientation of 232 respondents based on their age and gender. Pakistanis have a significantly higher score on task orientation. Their relationship orientation score is also on the moderately high range. …

Brazilian SMEs, encouraged by government policy, are rapidly expanding into international markets. We propose to present empirical findings of the relationship between social capital, the extent of strategic internationalization and performance. We measure social capital in terms of the nature and extent of membership of an individual or group in informal networks and formal, voluntary organizations using two adapted tools, the SOCAT (Social Capital Assessment Tool) and the SC-IQ (Integrated Questionnaire for Measuring Social Capital) from the World Bank. Agile software development methods, characterized by delivering customer value via incremental and iterative time-boxed development processes, have moved into the mainstream of the Information Technology (IT) industry. However, despite a growing body of research which suggests that a predictive manufacturing approach, with big up-front specifications, detailed estimates, and speculative plans applicable to manufacturing domains, is the wrong paradigm for software development, many IT organizations are still hesitant to adopt agile approaches (Larman, 2004).

This dissertation explores the underresearched topic of the motivation of non-profit organizational (NPO) workers for accepting international assignments (IAs). In the literature review, the motivation and reasons for working and living outside the home country by multinational corporate expatriates, international migrants, and long-term international volunteers are summarized. With the reasons for expatriation distilled from the literature, a self-determination theory (SDT) approach, and open-ended questions, the motivations for NPO workers to accept IAs are factor analyzed and triangulated using data from a sample of more than 140 Christian mission and humanitarian workers originating from 25 countries and representing 48 sending organizations. …
