How Do Investment Horizons Matter For Corporate Policies?, Kershen Huang, Alex Petkevich
How Do Investment Horizons Matter For Corporate Policies?, Kershen Huang, Alex Petkevich
HCBE Faculty Presentations
We examine the relation between institutions’ investment horizons on firms’ financing and investment decisions. Firms with larger short-term institutional ownership use less debt financing and invest more in corporate liquidity. In contrast, firms with larger long-term institutional ownership use more internal funds, use less external equity financing, and preserve investments in long-term assets. These results are driven primarily by the informational differences among institutions. We argue that short-term (long-term) institutions collect and use value-neutral (value-enhancing) information.

We examine the relation between institutions' investment horizons on firms' financing and investment decisions. Firms with larger short-term institutional ownership use less debt financing and invest more in corporate liquidity. In contrast, firms with larger long-term institutional ownership use more internal funds, less external equity financing, and preserve investments in long-term assets. These results are driven significantly by information, in addition to the long-term demand shock of institutional ownership. We argue that short-term (long-term) institutions collect and use value-neutral (value-enhancing) information.

An Investigation Of The Key Factors That Affect The Adoption Of Smartphones In Global Midmarket Professional Service Firms, Mark S. Kocour
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The evolution and proliferation of mobile devices (m-devices) in the workplace have been rapid. In comparison to conventional services provided by mobile phones (m-phones), smartphones feature sophisticated functionality, such as Internet access, video/audio streaming, and business productivity applications. As a consequence of increased demand for smartphones in the workplace, an understanding of the factors that determine the decision to adopt smartphones in business settings is necessary. The goal of this investigation was to identify the key factors that have an impact on the adoption of smartphones.
This dissertation investigation provided an understanding of the key factors that affect the adoption …

Transnational Companies And Radical Transformation Processes: A Study Of Performance In Comparison To Other Multinational Companies, Jorge Alejandro Palacios
HCBE Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to answer the following question: Do organizations that were defined as having successfully adopted the transnational model, as per Bartlett and Ghoshal (1989), and labeled as transnational companies (TNC), perform significantly better than other multinational companies (MNC) when going through radical transformation processes?
This research question was answered through a mixed method research design. The first part used a quantitative research approach and evaluated the financial performance of TNCs selected from the Bartlett and Ghoshal (1989) research, using secondary data sources from 6 TNCs and 20 MNCs. The second part used a qualitative approach …
Trading Responses To Negative Signals, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington
Trading Responses To Negative Signals, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington
HCBE Faculty Articles
Mergers may be undertaken by giving shareholders of the target firm the right to exchange their stock for stock in the combined firm. Such stock mergers release the negative signal that the acquiring firm lacks cash. Informed traders seeking immediate gain may short sell acquirer stock or buy puts and sell calls. Liquidity traders, desiring longterm gain, may purchase stock or call options to benefit from lower stock prices, or sell stock or buy put options to maintain liquidity. This paper constructs a theoretical model in which option volume forms the bounds of the final stock price for informed traders …

A Theoretical Model Of Directional Volume On Acquirer Stock In Cash Mergers, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington
A Theoretical Model Of Directional Volume On Acquirer Stock In Cash Mergers, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington
HCBE Faculty Articles
The acquisition of a target firm in a transaction financed by cash is a cash merger. Announcements of cash mergers release the positive signal that the acquirer possesses cash reserves. As stock prices rise, informed traders may obtain abnormal returns by purchasing call options, selling put options or purchasing stock. This paper constructs a theoretical model in which call buy volume forms the upper bound of the final stock price, put sell volume forms the lower bound of the final stock price and stock purchase volume reveals the final stock price.

Human resources (HR) departments have started to take strategic steps to lessen the effect of high healthcare costs to the organization. Creating a culture of wellness at work and implementing workplace wellness programs, allows HR to support individual efforts towards a healthy lifestyle. By proving why organizations should invest in their most valuable asset, their employees, the human resources department can strengthen their position as a strategic partner. This paper addresses …
Follow Me! Followership, Leadership And The Multigenerational Workforce, Ronald M. Johnson
Follow Me! Followership, Leadership And The Multigenerational Workforce, Ronald M. Johnson
HCBE Theses and Dissertations
This research was designed to develop an understanding of today's multigenerational workforce with respect to a preferred styles or characteristics of followership and leadership. Specifically this research sought to determine if there was a relationship between an individual's generational cohort and the preferred styles of leadership and followership, as measured by implicit theories of leadership and followership. Therefore, this study draws upon generational theory (Mannheim, 1952), implicit theories of leadership (Epitropaki & Martin, 2004) and implicit theories of followership (Sy, 2010). The changes in the composition of the US workforce which have occurred, and which will continue to occur in …

This study examines the variables influencing CEO compensation in the technology sector using both exclusively exogenous and interchangeably exogenous and endogenous variables. The study was confined to a single industry to isolate industry compensation practices which may be smoothed out in multi-industry studies. Multiple equations in a vector autoregressive model were used to explain compensation in recognition of the endogeneity of variables such as sales growth, stock returns and net income. Using US firms listed on the NASDAQ, we find that CEO compensation (measured separately as salary only, stock option grants only and total compensation from all sources) to be …

Exploring Differences In Work's Meaning: An Investigation Of Individual Attributes Associated With Work Orientations, Rita Shea-Van Fossen, Donald J. Vredenburgh
HCBE Faculty Articles
To understand better the meanings of work for individuals, we explored work orientation and examined empirically individual attributes of proactive personality, concern for others, concern for self, preference for challenging work, and work enjoyment as related to job, career and calling work orientations. Age, income, and employment security were identified as control variables. Our data derived from an online survey of full-time blue-collar and corporate employees in the auto industry (n = 251). Our study findings suggest preference for challenging work differentiates job, career, and calling orientations. We discuss the implications of our findings and suggest areas for future research.

Criminal Background Checks In The American Employment Process, Frank J. Cavico, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Stephen C. Muffler
HCBE Faculty Articles
This article examines the important and controversial topic of criminal background checks in employment. The topic of criminal background checks in employment is indeed an important as well as controversial and difficult one in the world of business today, as this hiring practice addresses core values in society. Yet these values can conflict. One societal value is the belief that if a criminal ex-offender has paid his or her “debt to society’; then opportunities, such as employment, should be made available to such a person, just like everyone else. Business owners and managers today, however, are concerned about having an …

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of electric lamp renewal systems, an early, successful program to encourage the adoption of new technology, electric lighting. Design/methodology/approach – Much material for the research comes from a variety of archival sources and publications of the early part of the twentieth century. Findings – The free lamp renewal system was brilliant and effective: its high level of customer service and human contact dispelled fear raised by the new energy source, increasing the acceptance and use of electric lighting and thereby electricity. Lighting, in the absence of electrical appliances, …

In today's expanding and ever-evolving global marketplace, managers are beginning to be required to work with their companies and employees in entirely different ways. Explained in-depth throughout the entirety of the article is the 20th century management techniques pioneered by Taylor, then reformed by Weber and Fayol, contrasted against the ahead-of-its-time behavioural management and the 21st century market-based management styles. Credit will, of course, be given where earned to the first style since it is focused on a centralised and bureaucratic method that worked extremely well in the Industrial Revolution time period. Nonetheless in today’s market place it is no …

The Impact Of Psychological Distance On Moral Behavior, Randi L. Sims, Baiyun Gong
HCBE Faculty Presentations
Immoral or unethical behavior is often at the center of scandal. It makes headline news and is the basis for considerable academic research and case analysis. Yet, moral behavior as a separate construct from moral intent, has not received the same attention. The purpose of this paper is to consider the importance of psychological distance on moral behavior. Within the context of moral behavior, psychological distance refers to felt or perceived differences between victim, offender, and moral agent. A brief review of related theory is offered as are four propositions tying the constructs of psychological distance, emotional intensity, and values …

Sex Tourism In St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth Estes
Sex Tourism In St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands: An Exploratory Study, Elizabeth Estes
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands, is similar to other tourism dependent Caribbean nations where the tourism industry is dependent upon the `4 S's'- sun, sand, sea, and sex. This researcher posited that the phenomenon of sex tourism exists in St. Thomas as it does in other tourist destinations in the Caribbean like Jamaica, Belize, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Barbados (Bailey and Ricketts, 2003; de Albuquerque, 1998; Munshi, 2006; Ryan and Kinder, 1996). The lacuna of any U.S. Virgin Islands sex tourism literature prompted this researcher to conduct an exploratory case study in St. Thomas to learn whether or …
Identifying The Factors That Influence Conflict Management Behavior Of Human Resource Professionals In The Workplace: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Personality And Conflict Management Behavior, Gail Joyce Shapiro
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
Effective conflict management in the workplace can reduce the negative consequences of conflict. These negative outcomes can include low productivity, health-related stress, increased employee turnover, or litigation. A Human Resource (HR) professional can help mitigate these negative outcomes in the workplace when using effective conflict management behavior with employees. However, there is a void in research pertaining to HR professionals’ use of conflict management behavior.
This quantitative, correlational research study examined whether personality has an impact on assertive or cooperative conflict management behavior of HR professionals in the workplace. Statistical testing found a significant relationship between the harmonious, people-person (a …

This exploratory, empirical study reports on social capital in a commodity-based industry in an emerging market context. We examine whether Brazilian entrepreneurs and SMEs in the Stone industry experience contextual normative pressure sufficient to retard or promote the growth of social capital. Further we link social capital development to internationalization and performance. We find that there is a lack of social capital development and propose that this is related to the country context of Brazil and the stage of development along the industry value chain. We begin to answer the question, essentially, are the benefits of social capital universally implementable …
