"Revenues And Expenses For Cons And Festivals" From The Pop Culture Business Handbook For Cons And Festivals, Jon Garon
Faculty Scholarship
This article is part of a series of book excerpts from The Pop Culture Business Handbook for Cons and Festivals, which provides the business, strategy, and legal reference guide for fan conventions, film festivals, musical festivals, and cultural events. When organizing a festival or Con, the economic model used to develop the event will drive many of the key decisions. If one accepts that the designing of the Con is a form of building a complex game for the attendees, then the Con economy will define many of the structural design choices which will come later in the planning. These chapters …
"The Theories Underlying The Con Environment" From The Pop Culture Business Handbook For Cons And Festivals, Jon Garon
Faculty Scholarship
This article is part of a series of book excerpts from The Pop Culture Business Handbook for Cons and Festivals, which provides the business, strategy, and legal reference guide for fan conventions, film festivals, musical festivals, and cultural events.Content from Cons and festivals dominate U.S. pop culture. The conventions serve as launching pads for new artists, entrepreneurs, and innovators. The smaller versions of these events create space to develop fan fiction, allow new artists to expose their work to interested audiences, and provide an entry point for new creative enterprises. As a cultural event and platform for expression, these events …

Gendering Migration Determinants: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Professional Immigrant Women From India, Noreen Ohlrich
Gendering Migration Determinants: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Professional Immigrant Women From India, Noreen Ohlrich
Theses and Dissertations
The economic contributions of highly qualified (HQ) labor migrants from developing countries fuel the global talent race. The problem is that little is known about the women in this sought out talent pool. This phenomenological study addressed this neglected gendered dimension by exploring how professional Asian Indian women experienced the following aspects of international migration: (a) gendering international mobility, (b) women and the race for global talent, (c) policies and the labor market, (d) cultural stigma, (e) brain drain versus diaspora networks, and (f) the Asian Indian woman paradox.
Professional Asian Indian women from greater Frankfurt am Main, Germany were …

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Emotional Labour On Health Managers, Carlene Boucher
The Qualitative Report
The objective of the study was to examine how surface acting is used by middle managers to manage the emotional displays of executives in the health industry in Australia. The research was located within a social constructionist epistemology and the theoretical construct used to structure the study was surface acting. Data was generated through qualitative interviews with 49 middle managers. Analysis was undertaken using grounded theory and thematic analysis. The main finding was that unlike male managers, female managers took on the role of managing the emotional displays of senior staff and used surface acting as the means of doing …

Demand Imbalance: How Acute Demand Changes Impact Salesperson Performance, Ricky J. Fergurson
HCBE Faculty Presentations
Previous literature has examined customer demandingness as it relates to salesperson performance. Salespeople are subjected to not only customer demands but company demands as well. These demand shifts leave the salesperson feeling as though they have to be in two places at one time. The internal conflict creates stress and impacts salesperson performance. Developing an understanding of how these acute demand changes influence salesperson performance expands the scope of current literature as well as offering managerial insights into how to minimize demand imbalance. This study begins to develop a demand intensity scale as well as examining the effect of demand …

National Labor Relations Board Columbia University Graduate Student Unionization Decision: Analysis And Implications For Administrators, Frank J. Cavico, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba
HCBE Faculty Articles
All employees want to be treated fairly by their managers and employers. If workers observe that they are not getting a fair compensation and treatment for their knowledge and outcomes, then they will naturally think of unionizing. This is equally true of those who work in the government sector, private industries and educational institutions. For educational institutions, one question has been to determine if teaching and research assistants can be considered employees. The NLRB ruling in the Columbia University case demonstrates that teaching and research assistants at educational institutions are employees and should have the ability to unionize. As such, …

The study examines the strategies adopted by street vendors or hawkers in Ghana in a bid to gain competitive advantage. Drawing on six focus group meetings held with street vendors in two sub-metropolitan assemblies (Bantama and Tafo) in Kumasi, Ghana, the study finds that street vendors adopt ten strategies – networking, multiple undifferentiated market strategy, the sale of convenient products, “dying and resurrecting” (strategic exit and return into business), regular changing of goods and services, exploitation of flexible operating hours, cost-based pricing strategy, sales promotion, trade credit and locational advantage – to gain competitive advantage. Using these strategies, a theoretical …

An Application Of Brand Personality To Green Consumers: A Thematic Analysis, Anitha Acharya, Manish Gupta
The Qualitative Report
Green products are increasingly becoming popular in India as a fashion statement. Yet, limited attention has been given to understand why users of green products associate themselves with green brands in India. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of brand personality to green products. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions of green product consumers revealed six dimensions of green brand personality (GBP). GBP is a set of human characteristics associated with a green brand. By focusing on the green brand personality dimensions discovered in this paper, marketing managers can better understand why …
Extending Organizational Memory And Corporate Communications Research Via Autoethnography/Autobiography, Damion Waymer, Nneka Logan
Extending Organizational Memory And Corporate Communications Research Via Autoethnography/Autobiography, Damion Waymer, Nneka Logan
The Qualitative Report
Culture, business, and communication are overlapping human phenomena. However, corporate communication methods have yet to embrace the complexity of organizational culture. Since the study of culture is anthropological in nature, we propose foregrounding autoethnography/autobiographical approaches and method to analyze corporate organizational culture. We argue that studying corporate communication, public relations, and society via the lenses of organizational culture and subsidiary organizational memory can provide unique insights into practice of corporate communication and the theorizing of organizational memory research. In this case example, we answer this question: In what ways can autobiographical/autoethnographic narratives of organizational members inform the theory, research, and …
Good Vibrations: Charting The Dominant And Emergent Discursive Regimes Of Sex Toys, George Rossolatos
Good Vibrations: Charting The Dominant And Emergent Discursive Regimes Of Sex Toys, George Rossolatos
The Qualitative Report
Sex toys promote a new consumptive ethos whose significance may be adequately outlined by attending to the institutional implications of this product category’s consumption. By drawing on Foucault’s theory of sexuality and the technologies of the self that materialize with the aid of discursive formations about sexuality, as well as on relevant sociological and ethnographic insights, I undertake a qualitative content analysis on a corpus of 100 sex toys’ product reviews from popular magazines and web sites in order to identify how the discourse about sex toys is articulated in terms of three dominant categories of sexual scripts (Simon & …

Improving Data Quality And Avoiding Pitfalls Of Online Text-Based Focus Groups: A Practical Guide, Lilla Vicsek
Improving Data Quality And Avoiding Pitfalls Of Online Text-Based Focus Groups: A Practical Guide, Lilla Vicsek
The Qualitative Report
Despite the fact that there are several practical advantages of online typed focus groups, this type of group questioning has not spread as widely as had been expected when it appeared as a new research option. One of the reasons for that might be that a major risk of these text-based focus groups is inadequate data quality. Unless certain measures are taken to prevent this, an analysis can face the problem of not being rich enough and not digging deep enough – which are often important criteria for good qualitative analysis. This article discusses how to deal with the problem …

Self-Image Enhancement Through Branded Accessories Among Youths: A Phenomenological Study In India, Anitha Acharya, Manish Gupta
The Qualitative Report
Fashion not only forms an important part of everyday consumption decisions, but also plays an important role in all daily events such as, the clothing we wear, how we think and also what we eat and where we eat. In realism, fashion is an outcome of a dynamic culture and common shifts in the tastes and style of individuals. The center of the debate appears to be that branded fashion accessories involvement is likely to be associated with differences in sensitivity to one’s social surroundings (Auty & Elliott, 1998). The question is: “Whether involvement in fashion accessories with its strong …

Exploring Dimensions Of Teachers’ Ocb From Stakeholder’S Perspective: A Study In India, Musarrat Shaheen, Ritu Gupta Dr., Y.L.N Kumar Dr.
The Qualitative Report
Parents are real beneficiaries of school services. Their involvement in school based activities has changed the role breadth of teachers. Schools can handle this parental involvement through the extra-role behaviors of teachers. These beyond the job behaviors or organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB) of teachers are crucial for the schools. Despite the prescribed roles and duties, the schools cannot predict and infer through formally stated in-role job description, the entire range of extra-role behavior exhibited by teachers during and after school. In this study, teacher’s role breadth is examined under the broad spectrum of Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) which resulted into …

Food allergies within the United States and Europe have become exceedingly prevalent in children, adolescents, and adults. In the United States alone, over 12 million people have been diagnosed with at least one food allergy. If the allergen is accidentally consumed, the food allergy sufferer may suffer a life-threatening condition known as anaphylaxis. More than 200 U.S. food allergic consumers die annually as a result of anaphylaxis due to ingestion of food allergens. To safely manage food allergies, food allergy sufferers and stakeholders (such as caregivers) require clear and complete ingredient information to avoid certain allergens in packaged food products. …
