Ashana Puri, PhD, is the newest faculty member in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Originally from Chandigarh, India, sherecently completed her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics at Mercer University and worked on transdermal drug formulations with the well-known scientist, Dr. Ajay Banga. She also has experience working on research projects with cosmetic companies, L’Oreal and NuFace.Ashanaearned a MS degree in Pharmaceutics and a BS in Pharmacy at Panjab University, India. She worked as a research intern and associate scientist at Teva Pharmaceuticals in West Chester, Pennsylvania, before joining ETSU.

JOHNSON CITY Students in East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy will have the opportunity to earn a bachelors degree while studying for the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree starting this fall.
The Gatton Colleges new bachelor of science degree in pharmacy studies the first in the state of Tennessee was approved this summer by the Tennessee Board of Regents.
Gatton is among the vast majority 121 of 129 of pharmacy schools in the country that do not require a bachelors degree for admission, according to data from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY The Generation Rx (GenRx) chapter at East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy recently brought home a national award for its efforts related to prescription drug abuse.
The student organization, which aims to enhance medication safety and combat the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs through educational programs, was named the best overall GenRx chapter in the country during the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists conference held late last month.

JOHNSON CITY A new team of collaborators at East Tennessee State University has received a grant to study the possible connection between genetic traits and side effects of a drug used to treat HIV.
Right now, there are more than one million people diagnosed with HIV in the United States, said Dr. Sam Harirforoosh, associate professor at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at ETSU and principal investigator for the project. Currently, there are 25 medications available to treat HIV and a number of combinations of those drugs.

JOHNSON CITY The student chapter of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University recently was awarded a high honor from the NCPA Foundation.
The group earned first-runner up for 2015 NCPA Student Chapter of the Year. The award recognizes commitment to community service, recruiting new members, promoting independent community pharmacy and advocating legislative action.
Members were presented with a certificate of achievement for their efforts during the NCPAs annual convention earlier this month in Washington, D.C. Roughly 35 students at the pharmacy school are members of the NCPA chapter. …

ETSU Professor, Dr. Steven Wallace, gave a presentation on the fossil history of tapirs at the Nashville Zoo. The presentation was part of the Zoo’s 3rd Annual Party for the Planet Celebration and was open to the public. During the talk Wallace highlighted the Gray Fossil Site and the importance of its fossil tapirs for helping save living tapirs. In their last studio at ETSU, senior design students just presented their projects on how design can address a social issue. This semester long project included research papers, multiple presentations using various types of delivery methods (Skype, PowerPoint and large presentation boards – shown). All during the semester they worked with regional professional mentors who works with them each week. Topics included deafness, obesity, urban farming, and domestic abuse.

All designers spend a very small portion of their time selecting finishes and working with color but a vast majority of their time is spent doing so many other important things that relates to the safety and their clients. In their Building Systems course students learn about fire and life safety codes, fire separation, compartmentalization, smoke/heat detectors, pull stations, exit illumination, water flow, and many others.

The Senior Health Care Studio toured Johnston Memorial Health in Abingdon, VA. to learn about the functions within their facilities. Students will be making design modifications to several locations within the facility based on a new branding program and the hospitals needs following a post-occupancy evaluation. Before starting the project students tried to navigate the ETSU campus in a wheelchair to bring awareness to design issues facing the wheelchair bound. After completing these activities students took time for a time for brainstorming before returning to the classroom to begin their designs.

JOHNSON CITY A student organization within the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University has won a national award for its efforts in impacting policy and legislation.
During a conference last month, the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter from ETSU accepted the National Policy and Legislative Award, which is given to only one chapter in the country for its active participation as agents of change within the legislature.

Donning a hard hat and a bright yellow safety vest, Dr. Arpita Nandi joined her students on an up-close, behind-the-scenes tour of an improvement project happening at Boone Dam on the South Fork Holston River in northeast Tennessee. One important event that happens in studio courses is when students present their design solutions to visiting design professionals from the Knoxville and Johnson City region. Students develop oral presentation skills, receive feedback, and begin to network with future employers in small groups. Meet Cara Carter, fourth-year pharmacy student
Cara Carter grew up on the south side of Kansas City, Missouri. While she lived in a decidedly urban environment, Carter says the health care experiences in her hometown are not that different than those found in rural settings.

LEBANON, Va. If a program piloted in Southwest Virginia and metro Richmond goes well, saving someone from an opioid overdose could be as simple as administering an EpiPen.

Meet Dr. Brooks Pond, from Kingsport, Tennessee. In 2007, Dr. Pond became one of the inaugural faculty at Gatton College of Pharmacy. Brooks received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Duke University and then completed a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in Developmental Neurobiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Although her expertise is in the field of neuropharmacology, she enjoys teaching in many areas of physiology and pharmacology. Brooks also loves working with both graduate students and pharmacy students in the laboratory where she seeks to better understand the consequences of psychostimulant use on the brain.

JOHNSON CITY Students in Dr. Arpita Nandis Engineering Geology class at East Tennessee State University recently enjoyed some unseasonably warm February weather while learning about the ongoing Boone Dam Project during a class tour.
This is the second class tour of Boone Dam coordinated by Nandi, associate professor and chair of the ETSU Department of Geosciences, who has also taken students to Center Hill Dam in Nashville, as well as to sites of landslides and other geo-hazard sites in the region.

BFA graphic design alum Justin Doak wrote and illustrated the children's book The Wendigo's Woods. Doak's book is based on the unsavory legend of the Wendigo, who's roots spawn from Native American lore. He re-imagines the Wendigo, which finds a new home in children's literature with 31 woodcut-inspired illustrations.
