A group of students at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy were featured on the cover of the American Pharmacist Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists’ (APhA-ASP) Student Pharmacist magazine.
The theme of the photoshoot in the November/December 2019 bi-monthly magazine was “Personal & Team Development” and featured students on the ETSU Basler Team Challenge and Aerial Adventure Course completing team-based activities. The photos were included in the magazine’s feature article, “Becoming a Successful Team,” by Crystal Atwell, PharmD, APhA director of student and new practitioner development in Washington, DC.

At the recent national Student National Pharmaceautical Association (SNPhA) conference, ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy's SNPhA chapter took home a national honor.
McKayla Barker ('22) was awarded "Chair of the Year " for her work with Remember the Ribbon, which is devoted to HIV/AIDS awareness. In addition, ETSU SNPhA was one of eight teams chosen to compete in a live clinical debate during the national conference.
In 2019 the chapter earned Overall Chapter of the Year, competing with 100 other chapters across the country at the organization’s annual convention in Houston. In addition, they earned nine other national honors.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Department of Physical Therapy has expanded its educational and clinical reach in the region through the growth of residency and fellowship programs that offer advanced, specialized training for physical therapists who are interested in orthopaedics.
“Physical therapy education has evolved over the years,” said Dr. Michael Bourassa, assistant professor and residency and fellowship program director. “It started as a certificate program, then became a bachelor’s program, then a master’s and is now a doctorate. With that push, the next step was post-professional training, including residencies and fellowships.”

Emma Hill firmly believes that an experience is what you make of it, so when she arrived on ETSU for her freshman year, she was determined to make this journey a positive one.
Her post-high school journey had already taken a different course from the one she had initially planned. Her original plan was to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. She was all set, but at the last minute, a past shoulder injury she sustained as a cheerleader medically disqualified her. Names, characters, costumes, notes and venues change, but reviewers find soprano Diba Alvi “spectacular,” “alluring” and “impressive” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and in command of “the stage with stellar vocalism and a sharply dramatic personality” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review).

Meet Kate Trabalka
Kate Trabalka, a junior from Oak Ridge, is an ETSU Fine and Performing Arts Scholar who is pursuing a degree in media and communication with a concentration in journalism and a minor in dance. Last year, Trabalka auditioned for a popular reality television show for dancers, and while she did not make it, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that helped her to focus on where she wants to take her career, both as a dancer and as a journalist. JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 4.
The class, limited to 35 students, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified, and the course now offers more sessions to accommodate new PTCB requirements.
The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY – After several years of careful planning, the Climate Office for the state of Tennessee has been officially recognized at East Tennessee State University by the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC).
The Tennessee Climate Office (TCO) at ETSU has been fulfilling the basic responsibilities of a state climate office since its establishment in 2016, providing climate data services to state agencies, researchers and citizens and studying the impact of drought, extreme rainfall, severe storms and other hazards. JOHNSON CITY – Dr. Ingrid Luffman, an assistant professor in the Department of Geosciences at East Tennessee State University, was recently honored with a 2019-2020 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Luffman, who graduated from UTK in 2013 with a Ph.D. in geography with a concentration in spatial analysis and watershed dynamics, received the award in the Early Career category for individuals who graduated within the past 10 years. Awards are also given in Mid-Career (10-25 years since graduation) and Lifetime (more than 25 years since graduation) categories.

Senior Kaitlin Campbell Banks’ journey at East Tennessee State University has been about learning how to balance all the things she loves – which include everything from her full-time job at an assisted living facility to helping out on her family’s cattle farm.

Expertise in “playing sick” is not a job skill that most employers would want to see on a résumé – unless you are a standardized patient.
Christine Murdock, a standardized patient (SP) at ETSU Health, has had more medical maladies than can she can count over the past three decades – but she never gets sick of being “sick.” As an SP, Murdock’s job is to portray a realistic patient, their family member or others to recreate a scenario accurately and consistently for ETSU Health students and residents.
