The purpose of this paper is to develop and demonstrate a dictionary building process model for text analytics projects following the design science methodology. Using inductive consensus-building, we examined prior research to develop an initial process model. The model is subsequently demonstrated and validated by using data to develop an environmental sustainability dictionary for the IT industry. To our knowledge, this is an initial attempt to provide a normalized dictionary building process for text analytics projects. The growing demand for healthcare services combined with the disarray in the health insurance market in the United States has created a situation where rival health networks are aggressively competing by building duplicate health facilities and providing redundant services in localized geographic regions. Unfortunately, this strategy can reduce the quality of patient care and decrease profits (Kaissi & Charland, 2013). A solution to this problem is for health networks to cooperate and share healthcare equipment, facilities, and personnel. Toward that end, this paper presents a game-theoretic method that can share these costs in a fair, efficient, and repeatable manner.

The development of best practices that deliver quality STEM education to all students, while minimizing achievement gaps, have been solicited by several national agencies. ABMS is a feasible approach to provide insight into global behavior based upon the interactions amongst agents and environments. In this review, we systematically surveyed several modeling and simulation approaches and discussed their applications to the evaluation of relevant theories in STEM education. It was found that ABMS is optimal to simulate STEM education hypotheses, as ABMS will sensibly present emergent theories and causation in STEM education phenomena if the model is properly validated and calibrated.

This study examines how Taiwanese college students understand the traditional, culturally Chinese concept of Yuan and its role in their use of a new and distinctive Taiwanese social networking site—Dcard. Particular attention is paid to the Dcard’s unique friending mechanism, which provides users the opportunity to connect (or not) with one, seemingly random new friend each day at midnight. Through thematic analysis of 15 semi-structured long interviews, the study finds that Dcard users understand Yuan as a multi-faceted concept pertaining primarily to interpersonal relationships (relationalism). Machine learning techniques have shown their usefulness in accurately predicting greyhound races. Many of the studies within this domain focus on two things; win-only wagers and using a very particular combination of race history. Our study investigates altering these properties and studying the results. In particular we found a race history combination that optimizes our S&C Racing system’s predictions on seven different wager types. From this, S&C Racing posted an impressive 50.44% accuracy in selecting winning wagers with a payout of $609.34 and a betting return of $10.06 per dollar wagered.

This pedagogical paper describes how a graduate course in Text Mining was developed and taught in a fully online format at Quinnipiac University. The software used was SAS™ Enterprise Miner. This paper discusses the design, software used and the methodology followed in the course. A critical component of the course required the students to delve deep into social media data by completing a detailed project on analyzing sentiment analysis using large files of social media data. A sample report of this project, which was a key deliverable for the course, is described at length in this paper.

What effect does a financial news article have on stock price? To answer this question we investigate stock price movements within the minutes following financial news releases, broken down by media outlet, time of release and article sentiment. Our data shown a Sharpe ratio (a measure for calculating risk-adjusted return) of 1.18 versus a random dataset of ‑0.06, indicating significant price movement immediately following article release. Second, we found that articles released through WSJ, Reuters – UK Focus, NYT and FT all experienced significant positive returns, whereas articles in Barrons, MarketWatch, Forbes and Bloomberg experienced significant negative returns.
