Computers can enhance the decision-making capability of a manager. This may involve software programs readily available for the personal computer or programs especially customized for a particular company's purposes. This article reviews examples of both and focuses on Solver, an add-on for Excel or 1-2-3 97. Solver enables a manager to manipulate available resources to meet productivity needs. This may involve a specific goal such as maximization of profit or minimization of cost. But it might also involve several goals that can be prioritized. Use Of Gdss And Training Of Group Members To Improve Decision-Making: An Empirical Study, Edward T. Chen, Sumit Sicrar, Hsin-Ginn Hwang

Journal of International Information Management

Using Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS) to enhance group work has been emphasized in several GDSS studies. Despite the volume of accumulated research, little attention has been paid to investigating the member training effects on group performance. Member training includes group task management techniques, such as constructive attitudes toward group task and decision-making by consensus. This empirical study evaluated the effects of using a GDSS and member training on group performance. The experiment found that groups with member training had better decision quality and GDSS groups demonstrated better decision quality.

Health care has long been known as afield that embraces and exploits new information technology, and. this trend shows no signs of slowing down. The healthcare industry is likely to be one of the largest beneficiaries of the Internet technology. This paper addresses four critical infrastructure issues: technological infrastructure, intranet development, financial infrastructure, and quality concerns. Service opportunities and practical problems are discussed that will provide managerial implications in health care and future research opportunities.

This project entitled A story, a story: a neighborhood performing arts project, focused on transforming a chosen piece of children's literature into a live performance. It was a process driven project which did not solely focus on the final production. Within this project I decided to use the conceptual framework as a basis for teaching drama and movement instead of the rote method of learning.

The topic of software quality assessment is at the forefront of the software engineering movement. This study adopts the general systems theory and proposes a four-way interaction model which uses nth logic function to represent interactions of a Group Decision Support System (GDSS) to examine the interaction issues when designing a GDSS. Security and integrity are frequently competing characteristics in an information system. Sectirity implies that a user can only access a specific subset of the information in the system, namely that information which the user has permission to access. Integrity implies that the information is "correct", i.e., that it satisfies the constraints, rules and conditions contained in the information system. A problem arises when a user who is unable to access certain information because of security restrictions, is left with an "incorrect" or inconsistent view of the information system. Computer simulations have been utilized for well over twenty years as an instruetional tool in business currieulums. According to Joseph Wolfe (1993), use of business computer simulations is no longer "cutting-edge." Simulation games have become common place with utilization widespread in the university community. Information Systems literature has shown clear linkages between the selection of software development methodologies, the actions of software development teams, overall product quality, and user satisfaction. Rarely are these linkages emphasized, however, in current research on process improvement. This paper examines the convergence of these areas and discusses current research designed to further explore these linkages within the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) framework.

Many studies have investigated the effects of various meeting facilitation techniques on groups, but few have directly compared the effects of different electronic techniques on group interaction. In fact, the vast majority of research in the area of electronic meeting support has used only two techniques: verbal brainstorming and electronic individual poolwriting. This paper describes an experiment involving four groups of 35 undergraduate students each using electronic individual poolwriting, electronic gallery writing, verbal brainstorming, and manual individual poolwriting. Results show that groups using the two electronic techniques were more satisfied and productive and experienced less production blocking and evaluation apprehension. …

Group Decision Support Systems (GDSSs) and other electronic meeting technologies have been developed to support or replace traditional, verbal meetings. While extensive research has been conducted regarding the impact of these systems on the group decision making process, the vast majority of these studies have focused on groups meeting fact-to-face in one room. This paper focuses on how group members perform when distributed as non-proximate sub-groups (virtual legislative sessions) as compared to proximate, face-to-face groups (synchronous legislative sessions).
