Resource Estimation Of Information Systems Projects: A Case Study, George Royce, Uma G. Gupta
Resource Estimation Of Information Systems Projects: A Case Study, George Royce, Uma G. Gupta
Journal of International Information Management
Estimating resource requirements on any project is challenging and this is certainly the case for Information Systems (IS) projects. The impact of resource estimation of I/S projects has far reaching consequences, for the individual, the team, and the organization as a whole. In spite of its critical importance, estimating project resource requirements is still somewhat arbitrary and ad hoc in many organizations. Thjs paper presents a case study about a large insurance company and its efforts to develop aid implement a successful estimation model for IS projects. The impact of this methodology on productivity and cost savings is also outlined. …

Group Support System Research In The 1990s: Leaders In Research Productivity, Zachary Wong
Journal of International Information Management
Research using Group Support Systems has increased gradually from their beginning in 1984, and the area is a significant part of the overall MIS literature. Because of its importance, a few studies have attempted to identify the leading researchers and institutions in the area as well as trends over the years. This study updates the analysis with a survey of 236 papers published during the 1990s from 43 academic journals. The results show that many of the researchers identified earlier are still leaders, but individual rankings have changed.
Forecasting The United States Gross Domestic Product With A Neural Network, Milam Aiken
Forecasting The United States Gross Domestic Product With A Neural Network, Milam Aiken
Journal of International Information Management
Forecasting the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the United States is one of many estimates to predict the economic health of the country. Current forecasting techniques use consensus estimates of experts, econometric models, or other statistical methods. Relatively little research has been devoted to how artificial neural networks may improve these forecasts, however. This paper describes how a neural network using leading economic indicator data predicted annual GDP percentage changes one year into thefiiture more accurately than competing techniques over a ten-year period.

Cross-Cultural Issues In Virtual Team Support: Communication Characteristics And Task/Technology Perceptions From Mexican And U.S. Team Members, Richard E. Potter, Pierre A. Balthazard
Journal of International Information Management
We present a study of cross-cultural virtual teams supported by two computer-mediated communication technologies (electronic mail and the World-Wide Web). Our primary focus is to identify how cultural differences affect users' task and technology perceptions. Dyads made up of members from the United States and Mexico created a five-page strategic plan for the implementation of a joint MBA international business capstone course that establishes strong international bonds between the students of both institutions. Team members generated ideas, made decisions, and created a common strategic course through Email-based correspondence. They also had access to a project coordination guide, which was a …

Investment Centers That Are Feasible In A Credit Union, Sondra Kay Vick
Theses Digitization Project
This project will identify the options available to a credit union desiring to open an office of the securities industry to provide investment products and advisory services to its member. The three options identified are becoming a branch office of an established broker/dealer, becoming an introducing broker/dealer, or purchasing an existing broker/dealer. An analysis will identify the required needs of an account executive in a computer system, client statements, and client confirmations. It will also analysis the capital requirements, the expenses of opening and running an office, fees charged to clients, and the licenses required. This project will show that …

"Currently, the largest barrier to any given market usually involves capital. If a company does not have enough investment capital to start with, it could fail before it even gets started. However, there is a new component that affects some of the largest corporations in the world. The problem relates to being able to sustain current internal processing, as well as adapt and grow in new markets with higher volumes. There are systems out there today that claim to address these issues along with e-commerce and other electronic sharing of information."

A Hierarchy Fuzzy Mcdm Method For Studying Electronic Marketing Strategies In The Information Service Industry, Michael T. Tang, Gwo-Hshiung Tzeng, Shinn-Wen Wang
Journal of International Information Management
In this paper the impacts of Electronic Commerce {EC) on the international marketing strategies for the information service industries are studied. In seeking to blend humanistic concerns in this research with technological development by addressing challenges for deterministic attitudes, it also examines critical environmental factors relevant to Internet commerce in the changes of the international marketing environment. The needs for a new marketing paradigm for EC, which comes out of new trends of international electronic marketing, are also examined. The impacts of EC for the information service industry are discussed and a hierarchy fuzzy multicriteria decision-making (Fuzzy MCDM) method for …

The Dreams Of The Cashless Society: A Study Of Eftpos In New Zealand, Erica Dunwoodie, Michael D. Myers
Journal of International Information Management
This paper looks at the way in which Utopian dreams, such as the cashless society, influence the adoption of information technology. Some authors claim that Utopian visions are used by IT firms to market their services and products, and that the hype that often accompanies technological innovations is part of a "large scale social process" in contemporary societies. This article discusses the social role of technological utopianism with respect to the introduction of EFTPOS in New Zealand. The case of New Zealand is interesting, given that New Zealand has the highest saturation of EFTPOS terminals in the world.

An Exploration Of Differences In Judgements Of Computer Ethical Behavior By Sex, Education, Age, And Other Demographic Factors, Margaret Anne Pierce, John W. Henry
Journal of International Information Management
When faced with an ambiguous ethical situation related to information technology (IT), the individual's course of action is influenced by personal experiences, consideration of what co-workers would do in the same situation, and an expectation of what the company would sanction. In this article, the approval/disapproval ratings of over three-hundred Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) members concerning the actions taken in a series of IT ethical scenarios are evaluated. Respondents expressed their personal opinion, as well as their perception of their co-workers' opinion, and their understanding of the company s opinion of the actions relating to IT described in …

Electronic Data Interchange (Edi): Application Of Edi And Its Impact On Information Quality, Jagannathan Iyengar
Journal of International Information Management
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the electronic transmission or movement of business data, information and documents from one business'computer system to another system in a standardized format. This movement is in a structured data format that permits data to be transferred without rekeying from a computer-supported business application in one location to another such system elsewhere. This technologically advanced mode of business transactions is fast becoming the operating "norm" for many areas of the business world. EDI is not electronic mail or FAX. They do not generate computer-processable information. EDI is not an application; it performs no business transactions and …

An Abductive Model Of Population Change, Milan Aiken
Journal of International Information Management
Logical abduction is a relatively unknown technique that may be used to classify or forecast. This paper describes abduction and applies it to a classification problem involving population change in the United States to test its accuracy. Results show that for this problem, it is as accurate as logistic regression, used in a prior study. Guidelines for using abduction are also presented.

Knowledge-Based Simulation Model For Performance Analysis And Reliability Of Computer Networks, Jaymeen R. Shah, Mirza B. Murtaza, Vipul K. Gupta
Journal of International Information Management
Modeling and analysis of performance of computer networks is essential for ensuring smooth operation of an organization's networks and preventing major failures. Mathematical analysis and simulation modeling are the common procedures for network system performance analysis. In this paper, a knowledge-based simulation model is developed that can be used for predicting network performance and reliability.

Simulations used in training attempt to portray reality for the units or individuals participating in training. Some of the benefits of simulation training include; cost efficient training, training units in tasks that are too dangerous to perform otherwise, and training units in complex tasks in a repetitive fashion.
