Agency Problem And Corporate Philanthropy—Evidence From China’S Anticorruption Campaign, Lihong Liang, Nian Liu, Wenjie Ma
Agency Problem And Corporate Philanthropy—Evidence From China’S Anticorruption Campaign, Lihong Liang, Nian Liu, Wenjie Ma
Accounting - All Scholarship
This study explores the effect of China’s anticorruption campaign as a natural experiment for testing the agency-cost view of philanthropy. We find that state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which are more influenced by this campaign, experienced larger declines in philanthropy than non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs), especially regarding the percentage of high-agency-cost donations. The effect is more pronounced for firms with higher agency costs, namely firms with higher perks and located in low-legal-protection regions. Further, using manually collected data on firms’ philanthropy disclosure, we find that the campaign improves transparency in corporate philanthropy disclosures. SOEs are more likely to disclose donation information and provide …

Impactful Programs And Initiatives For Employee Resource Groups That Promote And Sustain Positive Social Determinants Of Health, Lisa Kangas, Maureen Hall, Julie James, Gladys Peters
Journal of Sustainable Social Impact
Organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) leaders’ lack of interest in employee resource groups (ERGs) and related programs can negatively impact an organization’s culture, operational excellence, and employee retention and have detrimental implications for social determinants of health (SDOH). Prioritizing ERG programs and initiatives is essential for organizational success and can positively affect SDOH. This qualitative pragmatic inquiry study identified and explored ERG programs and initiatives that support organizational culture, operational excellence, and employee retention. The research question for this study was: What ERG programs and initiatives support organizational culture, operational excellence, and employee retention? The study included eight DEI leaders …

Book Review: The Architecture Of The Playing Field, Eddie G. Walker Ii
Global Sport Business Journal
Athletic fields, facilities, golf courses, stadiums, and arenas are at the heart of the sport management industry. Physical activity has been “an essential component” of mankind’s life on Earth since the beginning of time (Elgammal & Abdel-Razek, 2022; p. 26). Throughout history, the methods of hosting athletic events have undergone significant evolution. Dr. Richard Cleary provides a concise yet thorough resource on how the structure of these spaces influences the experience for both participants and spectators. The Architecture of the Playing Field: Shaping Space in Sport comprises four chapters and an Epilogue that utilize architectural design and sociocultural theories to …

Book Review: The Olympics That Never Happened: Denver '76 And The Politics Of Growth, Samuel M. Clevenger
Global Sport Business Journal
The issue of economic growth and its historical ties to modern sport is of central importance to contemporary sport business researchers. After all, considering that the growth-driven sport industry is increasingly trying to balance improving the sustainability of their present practices and facilities with maintaining its emphasis on expansion, accumulation, and revenue generation–resulting in organizations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) engaging in “greenwashing” (Boykoff, 2025)–we (meaning sport researchers) need plentiful work that takes seriously the issue of economic growth and its impacts on the decision-making of sporting organizations. Adam Berg’s recent book The Olympics That Never Happened: Denver ‘76 …
The Dark Side Of Insider Trading, Keming Li
The Dark Side Of Insider Trading, Keming Li
All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)
This paper provides empirical evidence that insider opportunistic trading increases the likelihood of forced chief executive officer (CEO) turnover, but not voluntary CEO turnover. To identify the causal effect, I study an exogenous shock— the enactment of SEC Rule 10b5-1—and find that the enactment reduces the likelihood of forced CEO turnover. To analyze the possible reason for the results, I document that opportunistic insider trading (especially insider sells) increases the likelihood of undertaking an acquisition and reduces announcement returns. Firms with aggressive insider trading also are more likely to become takeover targets. Together, the evidence suggests that the board fires …

In an era of persistent economic uncertainty and supply chain disruptions, organizational resilience has emerged as a critical determinant of long-term sustainability, particularly in rapidly evolving industries such as food manufacturing. Emotional intelligence (EI) has been identified as a key driver of resilience, enabling individuals and organizations to better adapt, recover, and grow in the face of challenges. This study aims to investigate the impact of EI on organizational resilience and to assess the moderating role of transformational leadership in this relationship within the context of Jordan’s yogurt industry. A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected in …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Disruptions and uncertainties pose considerable challenges in supply chain (SC) operations, requiring robust, strategic approaches. This study addresses financial resource allocation between supply chain network (SCN) design and external market investments, explicitly considering budget allocation and sales representative selection for perishable products. We propose a novel axis-shift robust (AxShR) method combined with an enhanced p-robust optimisation framework to manage multiple complex uncertainties. The model introduces a new resilience strategy allowing retailers to transfer products within the SCN, and apply artificial intelligence (AI) via a neural network to predict disruptions by evaluating risk indicators such as supplier location risk, raw material …

A Stakeholder Approach To The Regulation Of On-Premise Signs, Christopher Auffrey, Mathew S. Isaac, Steven W. Kopp, Hannah Marriott, Aparna Sundar, Charles R. Taylor, Franklin Velasco Vizcaino
Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Using stakeholder theory, this article introduces a framework to inform decision making with respect to the regulation of on-premise signs. Because signage resides in a broader, shared environment and its regulation largely takes place at the local level of government, it can be considered unique among most other marketing-related communications. On-premise signs are important to individual businesses and the communities in which they are used, but at the same time, they are “out in the world,” cannot be avoided, and may not be relevant to or welcomed by many consumers who are exposed to them. A transformative consumer research lens …

This study examines the impact of Coca-Cola’s branding on consumer purchasing behavior in Japan’s beverage market. Employing a thematic qualitative approach, the research investigates brand recognition, cultural influences on marketing strategies, product differentiation, and consumer attitudes shaped by cultural values. Findings reveal that Coca-Cola’s global brand awareness combined with localized marketing efforts, including culturally relevant campaigns and health-oriented products, significantly influence Japanese consumer preferences. However, challenges remain due to increasing health consciousness and competitive market dynamics. The study contributes to understanding how multinational brands adapt to culturally distinct markets and offers practical recommendations for enhancing brand engagement in Japan. These …

Rutger Bregman's Centralized Utopia, Vladimir Snurenco
Rutger Bregman's Centralized Utopia, Vladimir Snurenco
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
A short, provocative review of Rutger Bregman’s Moral Ambition. I sketch his technocratic utopia—“Rutger-land”—a colder, centralized world where fossil fuels are banned, richer people are taxed into moral compliance, UBI prevails, and the landscape is “tobacco-free, malaria-free, poverty-free, and meat-free… just fields of kale and solar panels.” I argue Bregman’s approach is resolutely top-down—activism, lobbying, and policy over enterprise, churches, and grassroots civic life—misunderstanding how wealth is created and how real change happens. Against this centralized moralism, I make the case for decentralization, subsidiarity, and the quiet, dignified work of civil society.

Water From Stone: Extracting Leadership Wisdom From Moses' Mistake In Striking The Rock, Hershey H. Friedman, Joshua Krausz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This paper explores the leadership lessons embedded in the story of Moses striking the rock rather than speaking to it. While seemingly a simple act of disobedience, it highlights the crucial need for leaders to adapt their approach based on the situation. Just as Moses faced a new generation with different needs, leaders today must understand the complex interplay of social and psychological factors within their teams. Proactive problem-solving, rather than reactive responses, is critical. Furthermore, fostering a collaborative environment where individuals work towards a shared purpose, independent of a single leader, is essential to avoid dependency and encourage healthy …

Bridging The Cybersecurity Gap: Governance Challenges And Solutions For Caribbean Boards, Ron R. Sookram
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
As cyber threats become increasingly frequent and sophisticated, boards play a crucial role in ensuring that their organizations are both protected and prepared to respond to cyber incidents. This paper assesses the level of readiness of Caribbean boards to oversee cybersecurity, identifying challenges such as limited resources, shortage of expertise, and a narrow perception of cybersecurity as an IT issue. Using a mixed-methods approach combining survey data and secondary research, the study reveals significant gaps in board awareness, strategic prioritization, and resilience-building capabilities. Findings underscore a pressing need for greater board engagement, with an emphasis on integrating cybersecurity into corporate …
Leadership In The Accountability Era: Resisting Values Drift Through Deliberate System Design, Christine Haskell
Leadership In The Accountability Era: Resisting Values Drift Through Deliberate System Design, Christine Haskell
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study introduces values drift— the gradual, often unconscious misalignment between actions and stated commitments, driven less by misconduct than by lack of awareness, inertia, or performance pressure. As an emerging leadership risk, values drift is increasingly amplified by algorithmic influence and efficiency metrics. This research extends the Values Lifecycle Framework to examine how leaders sustain values alignment in high-velocity, data-driven environments. Through qualitative interviews with 19 CEOs, three leadership typologies emerged: Defaulters, who maintain stability through routine; Correctors, who stand at pivotal choice points where recognition and response are possible but not guaranteed; and Balancers, who embed …

A Culture Of Accountability Through Ethical Leadership Drives Citizenship Behavior In Ghana’S Traditional System Of Leadership, Eric Yeboah-Asiamah
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study seeks to investigate the influence of accountability on the community citizenship behavior of followers in Ghana's traditional system of leadership with the mediating role of ethical leadership behavior. A cross-sectional survey design was used to obtain quantitative data from 319 Ghanaians through questionnaires. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.1.0.3 was utilized to test the study’s hypotheses. The results showed that accountability (ACC) was a significant predictor of ethical leadership behavior but had no direct effect on community citizenship behavior (CCB). Additionally, the relationship between ACC and CCB was partially mediated by ethical leadership behavior. …

Factor Analysis Of The Cultivated Leadership Questionnaire (Clq) And Measurement Against The Short Dark Triad (Sd3), Christopher Ewing, Michael Epstein
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
This study aimed to evaluate the Cultivated Leadership Questionnaire (CLQ), a self-report tool designed to assess leadership based on key constructs such as self-regulatory behaviors, emotional intelligence, prosocial actions, positive motivational strategies, and personal influence. An exploratory factor analysis identified two main components that together accounted for 65.44% of the variance, suggesting a general leadership factor and a secondary factor capturing more specific leadership attributes. The study also examined the relationship between Dark Triad traits—psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism—and the leadership behaviors measured by the CLQ. The results revealed negative correlations between both Machiavellianism and psychopathy with leadership behaviors, while narcissism …
