Governmental Venture Capital – A Social Capital And Principal-Agent Related Examination For Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria And Germany, Christian Schlamp

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The underlying research study was concerned with public venture capital which is grounded in the assumption of market failure and financing gaps (Güllmann 2000; Brettel 2005) and associated with the risk of crowding-out (Colombo et al. 2016). In order to expand the research perspective and to shed new light on the public investors, this project was concerned with their strategy, with their social networks, their syndication rationales, their monitoring and mentoring in turnaround situations and their exit routes between 2015 and 2017. 67 governmental investors in Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria and Germany were invited to participate in a fully …

Adaptive Learning Gain In Asset Pricing, Sedealy Juste Lokossou Jan 2023

Adaptive Learning Gain In Asset Pricing, Sedealy Juste Lokossou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper delves into the complexities of asset pricing, emphasizing the need to go beyond prevailing paradigms and constant learning gain assumptions. We examine the influence of personal experiences, adaptive learning processes, and subjective return expectations on asset pricing. By incorporating the concept of time-varying learning gain, we provide a more realistic portrayal of asset pricing. Empirical analysis reveals a consistent negative correlation between experienced real payout growth and subsequent returns, indicating counter-cyclical behavior. Our findings also support the mean-reversion hypothesis in stock returns, although caution is needed due to some scenarios lacking statistical significance. Theoretical exploration uncovers that higher …

By Chameleonic Means; "Trust Based" Philanthropic Relationships, "The Business Of Yes," As Experienced By Black Fundraisers, Novien Yarber

Dissertations

In the wake of society’s reinvigorated consciousness around structural and systemic racism, conversations centering justice, equity, inclusion, access, and cultural diversification are going far beyond political discourse. Contemporary fundraising practices are also challenging antiquated hegemonic ways of philanthropy and are critically examining the practice from within. Among many things, this entails diversifying the historically White-female dominated fundraising workforce. In this, fundraising literature has paid minimal attention to intercultural/cross-racial dynamics as implications of diversification of the fundraiser workforce. Although some research may center fundraisers themselves (relative to their ethical and/or professional standards), this dissertation expands this field of study by offering …

Adaptation To Sport Retirement In Division I Student-Athletes, Andrea Cota Powell

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation utilizes a mixed-methods design to explore adaptation to sport retirement among Division I student-athletes. Sport retirement is a major life transition that can elicit changes in support systems, identity crises, and feelings of loss, failure, and grief. Transitioning out of sport is a phenomenon that over 90% of collegiate student-athletes experience when their four years of NCAA eligibility expires. It is a phenomenon that all athletes experience at some point in their lives. To transition out of sports, one must adapt to post-sport life. Study one of this dissertation explored the phenomenon of occupational retirement through concept analysis …

The researcher developed a 44-item Q sample of opinion …

Online Streaming Services: A Study On Consumers’ Attitudes Toward Advertising, Morgan Rogers Jan 2023

Online Streaming Services: A Study On Consumers’ Attitudes Toward Advertising, Morgan Rogers

Senior Honors Projects

Throughout the past decade, there has been a slow and steady rise in the number of online streaming platforms. Websites such as YouTube, Twitch, and Netflix have all taken the globe by storm with their compelling stories and interconnected communities. The numbers alone for each of these platforms speaks volumes to their prevalence in society; YouTube has over 2 billion monthly users, Netflix has well over 167 million consumers, and Twitch currently has 15 million daily active users (Frade, 2021). From this, of course, arises companies’ desire to broadcast their products and services to the vast number of people who …

Dry Spells And Global Crop Production: A Multi-Stressor And Multi-Timescale Analysis, Uchechukwu Jarrett, Steve Miller, Hamid Mohtadi Jan 2023

Dry Spells And Global Crop Production: A Multi-Stressor And Multi-Timescale Analysis, Uchechukwu Jarrett, Steve Miller, Hamid Mohtadi

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

More frequent and punctuated severe events such as dry spells are among the more salient manifestations of climate change. Because dry spells often co-occur with drought and heat waves, understanding the effects of dry spells and heat waves requires a multi-timescale and multi-stressor perspective. Using a global panel of daily precipitation and temperature from 1979 to 2016, we provide evidence that 4-5 week dry spells that occur during the hottest part of the year depress growth in crop production. The effects of these extreme events are modified by existing drought, aridity, and by heat waves. After accounting for productivity and …

F Is For Feminism: Mainstreaming Feminist Leadership In Academic Libraries, Shana Higgins Jan 2023

F Is For Feminism: Mainstreaming Feminist Leadership In Academic Libraries, Shana Higgins

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

Gender and whiteness structure library work in ways that continue to lack sustained critical attention, particularly in the research literature on library leadership and management. In 2020 just over 83% of librarians identified as women and as white, non-Hispanic. And 78.6% of library technicians and assistants identified as white, non-Hispanic. These demographics make librarians a slightly less diverse workforce than other professionals in educational jobs. Despite being a female-intensive and overwhelmingly white profession, the scholarship on leadership and management published in mainstream library and information science journals (LIS) rarely employs explicitly feminist frameworks or perspectives. By using critical feminist analyses …

The Effects Of Brand Relationships On Justice Perceptions In Service Recovery, Cid Gonçalves Filho, Kip Kiefer, Marc Fetscherin, Alexander Blandina, Marcelo Nacif Rocha, Plínio Rafael Reis Monteiro

Faculty Publications

Purpose: This paper explores how brand relationship quality (BRQ) influences consumers’ perceived sense of justice in the context of service recovery situations.

Design/methodology/approach: We conducted a survey of 368 consumers who experienced an automotive service recovery.

Findings: Stronger BRQ led to higher levels of perceived justice (distributive, procedural, and interactional), which in turn led to higher customer satisfaction of complaint handling. Ultimately, higher customer satisfaction led to lower complaining, lower retaliation, and higher purchase intention. Our alternative model tested the effects of BRQ sub-dimensions on justice perception. Interestingly, trust produced a “love-is-blind” effect, while intimacy revealed a “love-becomes-hate” effect.

The Artist As Surveillant: The Use Of Surveillance Technology In Contemporary Art, Claire O'Neill Jan 2023

The Artist As Surveillant: The Use Of Surveillance Technology In Contemporary Art, Claire O'Neill

MA Theses

Artists have long been called observers, voyeurs, and watchers, and with a
particular interest in human behavior and society, they frequently use unknowing
passersby as their subjects for works. Curators and scholars explored how artists put citizens under surveillance with photography and videography, which dates back to the early 1900s, years before governments deployed surveillance systems. Since the 1980s, artists have explicitly explored surveillance technology and theory to alert viewers to the rise of surveillance. Today, this genre is called artveillance, a term coined by Andrea Mubi Brighenti in 2010 to categorize art that explicitly deals with surveillance. This genre …

Effects Of Cyclic Heat Stress On The Acute Inflammatory Response In Broilers, Alessandro J. Rocchi, Chrysta N. Beck, Jossie M. Santamaria, Gisela F. Erf Jan 2023

Effects Of Cyclic Heat Stress On The Acute Inflammatory Response In Broilers, Alessandro J. Rocchi, Chrysta N. Beck, Jossie M. Santamaria, Gisela F. Erf

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Heat stress (HS) is a growing concern in broiler production. Little is known regarding the effect of HS on immune function. To examine the effects of HS on innate immunity, the local- and systemic-inflammatory responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were examined in Cobb 500 male broiler chicks reared under thermoneutral (TN) or cyclic HS conditions. Beginning at four days of age, HS birds were subjected to 35 °C from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and TN temperatures from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. At 37 days of age, four groups of broilers were formed: LPS-TN (8 broilers), phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)-TN (4 …

Listed Private Equity Returns: The Forecasting Power Of Premiums And Discounts, Daniel Krasemann Jan 2023

Listed Private Equity Returns: The Forecasting Power Of Premiums And Discounts, Daniel Krasemann

CMC Senior Theses

In this paper, I assess the ability of premiums and discounts to predict future listed private equity returns. I hypothesize that the premiums and discounts of the net asset value of the listed private equity funds with monthly lags hold forecasting power. I use four distinct listed private equity indices and their respective NAV P/D values for my research. To ensure my analysis is realistic in scope, I incorporate a variety of macroeconomic variables that have been proven to influence listed private equity returns. I structure my time-period analysis around the 2008-09 financial crisis. I generally find that a two-month …

Institutional Capital Effect’S On Single-Family Housing Markets, Henry Harvego Jan 2023

Institutional Capital Effect’S On Single-Family Housing Markets, Henry Harvego

CMC Senior Theses

This paper examines the impact of institutional investors on single-family housing markets, analyzing six dependent variables and two independent variables across 39 metropolitan cities. Despite receiving significant media attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, the study finds that the impact of institutional investors on median sale price is small and negative. However, institutional investors significantly impact other aspects of the housing market, including homes sold, new listings, inventory, days on market, and average-sale-to-list ratios. The results suggest that institutional investors are creating a more productive market, with transactions happening more quickly and more often. In light of these findings, policy discussions …

Executive Option Mix And Firm Litigation Risk, Andrew Cohen Jan 2023

Executive Option Mix And Firm Litigation Risk, Andrew Cohen

CMC Senior Theses

Compensating executives with stock options creates incentives for executives and aligns their goals with shareholders. When examining specific components of equity-based compensation, stock options have a larger incentive effect on executives compared to stock awards as options are priced as a function of stock volatility. Since the option incentive effect is more profound than the stock incentive effect, executives may take on more risk. The relationship between firm risk and litigation can be demonstrated by the pricing of directors’ and officers’ liability insurance, which protects them from the costs of litigation. The purpose of this study is to examine the …

Modeling The Performance-Based Compensation Of Mlb Catchers, William Deforest Jan 2023

Modeling The Performance-Based Compensation Of Mlb Catchers, William Deforest

CMC Senior Theses

How professional baseball players are compensated for their on-field performance and contribution to winning baseball games has been studied many times by baseball analysts, yet no real attempt has been made to focus solely on the catcher position. As one of the most demanding and specialized positions in the game, a talented catcher is vital to a team’s success. This paper attempts to utilize Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) and Offensive Runs Above Average (OFF), leading statistics that use Statcast data to measure defensive and offensive productivity, to determine which area of catcher defense is the greatest differentiator between elite defensive …

Geographic Dynamics Of Multifamily Capitalization Rates: A Comprehensive Study Of Variation And Determinants, Zachary Torrey Jan 2023

Geographic Dynamics Of Multifamily Capitalization Rates: A Comprehensive Study Of Variation And Determinants, Zachary Torrey

CMC Senior Theses

Capitalization Rates are a dynamic measurement utilized in real estate to assess investment opportunities. The cap rate is the best apples-to-apples comparison metric available to investors to compare and prioritize investments. As such, there is a large emphasis in the real estate field on understanding the best predictive indicators of cap rate variation across geographies. In this analysis, I focus on multifamily cap rates and examine what are the best predictive indicators that explain the level of the cap rate across geographies over time. In doing so, I identify three novel variables that influence the cap rate as well as …

My Physical-Digital Self: Exploring The Detrimental Effects Of The Metaverse On Relationship & Identity Development, Sophia De Castro Jan 2023

My Physical-Digital Self: Exploring The Detrimental Effects Of The Metaverse On Relationship & Identity Development, Sophia De Castro

CMC Senior Theses

The metaverse, which is the next iteration of the internet--an immersive, virtual world--poses a threat to the essential human need for healthy relationship and identity development. Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of isolation and virtual socialization led many to prefer physical experiences, despite society’s overall dependency on and connectedness to the internet and technological devices. Framed by Maslow’s hierarchy of human psychological needs, Turkle’s analysis of the human relationship to earlier forms of virtual reality, and Foucault’s principles of caring for and knowing the self, this paper argues that the metaverse will be detrimental towards developing participant’s …

Trustworthy Decentralized Last Mile Delivery Framework Using Blockchain, Ala' Alqaisi Jan 2023

Trustworthy Decentralized Last Mile Delivery Framework Using Blockchain, Ala' Alqaisi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The fierce competition and rapidly growing eCommerce market are painful headaches for logistics companies. In 2021, Canada Post’s parcel volume peaked at 361 million units with a minimum charge of $10 per each. The Last-Mile Delivery (LMD) is the final leg of the supply chain that ends with the package at the customer’s doorstep. LMD involves moving small shipments to geographically dispersed locations with high expectations on service levels and precise time windows. Therefore, it is the most complex and costly logistics process, accounting for more than 50% of the overall supply chain cost. Innovations like Crowdshipping, such as Uber …
