One-Participant 401(K) As A Tool For Farmers And Ranchers, Jessica Groskopf, Cory Walters, Doug Nelson

Center for Agricultural Profitability

According to USDA, only 40% of farm households participate in some type of retirement account. For self-employed farmers and ranchers without full-time employees, the opportunity to invest in a One-Participant 401(k) plan is a way to (1) save money for retirement, (2) reduce taxable income, and (3) provide the potential option to borrow from the plan. This series of articles will review these features.

What is a One-Participant 401(k)?

The One-Participant 401(k)is a qualified retirement plan designed specifically for business owners with no full-time employees other than the business owners and their spouses. Visit with your financial planner and tax …

One-Participant 401(K): Saving For Retirement And Reducing Taxes, Jessica Groskopf, Cory Walters, Doug Nelson Dec 2023

One-Participant 401(K): Saving For Retirement And Reducing Taxes, Jessica Groskopf, Cory Walters, Doug Nelson

Center for Agricultural Profitability

The adage that farmers and ranchers are often asset-rich and cash poor does indeed appear to be true! According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), just forty percent of farmers contribute to a retirement plan. And because many farmers and ranchers invest profits in their business rather than take a high salary, they show little income on their tax returns. This means they will have paid less into Social Security and their benefits will be lower when they retire. This can create cash flow challenges, especially for an older generation of farm and ranch families wanting to bring …

Learning From Subsistence Marketplaces And Beyond: A Cross-Sectoral Comparison In Benin, Paul Ingenbleek, Souleimane A. Adekambi, Hans C.M. Van Trijp Dec 2023

Learning From Subsistence Marketplaces And Beyond: A Cross-Sectoral Comparison In Benin, Paul Ingenbleek, Souleimane A. Adekambi, Hans C.M. Van Trijp

Subsistence Marketplaces

Subsistence Marketplaces publishes studies that study consumers, entrepreneurs, and marketplaces from a broad range of low income contexts in their own right, transcending the boundaries between sectors and disciplines to derive practically meaningful implications. This paper contributes to accomplishing the mission of the new journal by contextualizing market learning theory to subsistence marketplaces. More specifically, the study links two modes of market learning (exploration and exploitation) with producers’ livelihood performance. It hypothesizes that within subsistence marketplaces, producers benefit the most from exploration but to seize a market opportunity beyond the subsistence context, BoP producers should strengthen their exploitative learning processes. …

The Impact Of Project Management On The Adoption Of Emerging Media To Non-Commercial Broadcasting Media Businesses In Hispanic Markets, Jonathan Rosado Dec 2023

The Impact Of Project Management On The Adoption Of Emerging Media To Non-Commercial Broadcasting Media Businesses In Hispanic Markets, Jonathan Rosado

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Non-commercial radio broadcasting organizations are experiencing a significant loss of audience based primarily on migration to digital media outlets. The ineffectiveness of developing new media, such as podcasts, to reach new audiences and expand new business opportunities is reducing the chances of survivability for a hard-regulated radio sector established by the Federal Communications Commission regulations. A major new media integration exists in the non-commercial radio broadcasting industry in Puerto Rico, and inquiries into the knowledge and application of Project Management tools and techniques present on the management level of Hispanic markets help understand the occurrence. The performed study integrated a …

The Effect Of Adding Students To School-Parent Communication To Improve Parental Attendance At School Events, Amanda Sue Kirby Hart

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This quantitative, quasi-experimental static group comparison study aimed to determine parents' perspectives on their school involvement and the effects of student influence on parent attendance at school events when communication methods included students and parents. Sample participants included the parents of 381 elementary school students (Kindergarten-Fifth Grades) of one public charter school. The parent involvement events consisted of two asynchronous parent involvement videos, one for reading and one for math, delivered through the Family Involvement Questionnaire emailed …

Differentiating Modernity (The System Of White Supremacy) And Generating Otherwise Worlds As Publicly Engaged Scholars: What’S Ontological Inquiry Got To Do With It?, Carolyne J. White, Arturo E. Osorio, Tim K. Eatman, Margaret J. Weiss Dec 2023

Weiss

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

Seeking an answer to Tina Turner’s refrain, “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” this article is a rebellious, messy, place-based and deeply collaborative conversation. We draw upon the legacy of theatre and social critique and adopt the literary present tense to evoke a brave intimate space for imagining possibilities beyond the academic conventions of the present epistemological order. We seek to illuminate how ontological inquiry may provoke powerful access to generating new worldmaking for climate justice, particularly when one is being a publicly engaged scholar. Why new worldmaking? Within this unprecedented time of racial reckoning, war, climate catastrophe and …

Spacs And The Macroeconomy: An Empirical Examination Of Real Interest Rates' Impact On Spacs, Ryan A. Jacobs Dec 2023

Spacs And The Macroeconomy: An Empirical Examination Of Real Interest Rates' Impact On Spacs, Ryan A. Jacobs

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

Special Purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) are an alternative way private entities enter public markets through reverse merger of a publicly listed pool of capital. Price discovery is more transparent than the traditional IPO process, as valuations are negotiated between the SPAC Sponsor and the firm’s management team before shareholders approve through a shareholder vote. I conducted an OLS regression test for a relationship between SPAC activity, using capital invested in SPAC IPOs as a proxy, and various macroeconomic variables. I did not find evidence of a linear relationship. I examined the impact of the real interest rates on monthly pre-merger …

Educator Preparedness To Leverage Assistive Technologies In The Classroom, Sean Masterman

Doctorate in Education

The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is driving a compelling need for pedagogical change, yet there is disjuncture between the capacity of emerging technologies to address this need and their actual use in the American classroom. These technologies can enable personalization to meet each student’s individualized learning needs. Educator preparedness is the first step toward embracing and integrating the broad capabilities of emerging technologies to help build the future workforce. This qualitative, phenomenological case study assessed the preparedness of middle school general educators in two Minnesota school districts to leverage assistive technologies (ATs) to improve student learning from the perspective of …

The Effect Of Factors And Constraints On Sporting Attendance, Joshua D. Whitlow Dec 2023

The Effect Of Factors And Constraints On Sporting Attendance, Joshua D. Whitlow

Honors Theses

21,625 fans packed the confines of Brooks stadium on September 3, 2022, for a clash between the Army Black Knights football team and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team. This was a new record at Brooks stadium, and was followed with just 12,261 the next week vs. Gardner Webb. Meanwhile, a 2022 Coastal Carolina Women’s Soccer game draws in less than 200 spectators. On the surface level, the disparity of these numbers appears confusing and unconnected to one another, however there are a multitude of factors that go into the number of people who show up to a particular sporting …

College Student Attitudes Toward Student-Athlete's Ability To Profit From Name, Image, And Likeness (Nil), Daniel G. Panzano

Honors Theses

Since the recent passing of legislation allowing student-athletes to profit from their own personal brands and sponsorships (Name, Image, and Likeness; NIL), there has been very little research. The purpose of this study was to measure the attitudes and support students have towards the financial compensation of their student-athlete counterparts. The researchers surveyed 67 Coastal Carolina University students. Using a quantitative study, data was gathered pertaining to the opinions toward NIL, feelings of team affiliation, and demographic information. Statistically significant differences were found toward some elements of NIL and gender, major, and academic year. A statistically significant correlation was also …

Maui Wildfires: A Case Study In Local Government Crisis Communication Response, Joshua A. Voda

Student Theses and Dissertations

When wildfires swept through the island of Maui in Hawai‘i in August 2023, the communities of Olinda, Kula and especially Lahaina were devastated. Thousands of people were displaced, and nearly 100 people were lost. Just like the speed at which the fiery winds consumed these towns, accusations of emergency mismanagement and a host of misinformation spread by word of mouth and online. The primary local government authority for these communities is the County of Maui, currently led by Mayor Richard Bissen. This case study examines the first month of communication from the County of Maui to the affected communities via …

Enhancing Inclusion: Neurodiversity In The Workplace, Micah Cox Dec 2023

Enhancing Inclusion: Neurodiversity In The Workplace, Micah Cox

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Neurodiverse individuals have long been viewed negatively, particularly in the workplace. Many recruiters or hiring managers have never considered the benefits that hiring a neurodiverse candidate could bring to their organization, rather looking at the additional costs of accommodation. The results of analyzing several case studies show that companies who incorporate neurodiverse candidates into their labor pool have seen increased productivity, creativity, process innovation, and cost reductions. This paper reviews several case studies combined with data obtained from interviews with a neurodiverse individual and a direct support care professional to develop a list of methods to be used in the …
