Analyzing The Trends In Gaming-Based Tourism For The State Of Nevada: Implications For Public Policy And Economic Development, William R. Eadington

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Gaming revenue trends for Nevada's three major gaming markets- Las Vegas Strip, Reno-Sparks, and South Lake Tahoe-are examined over the past two decades. The Las Vegas Strip had been characterized by cyclical growth from 1990 until 2007, but the Great Recession had dramatic adverse impacts on revenues and employment. Apparent recovery in 2010 was driven largely by baccarat revenues, but they are not likely to be sustainable in the long term. For South Lake Tahoe, deterioration of its core tourism business has been taking place since 1990, but has accelerated since the beginning of the Great Recession and the opening …

Estimating The Ability Of Gamblers To Detect Differences In The Payback Percentages Of Reel Slot Machines: A Closer Look At The Slot Player Experience, Anthony F. Lucas, Ashok K. Singh

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The results of play on 60 different computer simulated reel slots challenge the widely held theory that frequent slot players are able to detect changes in a slot machine's house advantage as slight as 1 to 2%. These findings affect the formulation of critical and capital-intensive customer retention strategies and brand positioning campaigns within the gaming industry. An overwhelming majority of 10,000 virtual players were not able to reject the hypothesis of equal payback percentages after playing both a 3% game and a 12% game (i.e., a 400% increase in the house advantage). This result held across three levels of …

The gaming literature has identified a number of factors that have driven the growth of Macau's casino industry. At the same time, however, questions remain as to future prospects for the growth of the enclave's gaming revenue- and specifically, whether this type of growth can be sustained. A forecast of Macau gaming revenue and an examination of its seasonality can assist scholars and practitioners alike in developing a better understanding of seasonal variation (a significant consideration in the volatile world of gaming) and the future outlook of the world gambling capital. The objective of this article is to investigate these …

Critique Of Microcredit As A Development Model, Grace Levin Dec 2012

Critique Of Microcredit As A Development Model, Grace Levin

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The field of microcredit (otherwise known as microfinance, microlending, or microcapital) has expanded rapidly since the 1980s as an economic means of lifting people out of poverty. Generally, microcredit has been accepted as an effective method for empowering both individuals and communities. In recent years, however, critics have brought to light some of the problems associated with microlending, such as the complex socioeconomic factors that can cause loan programs to fail. These problems stem from the basic tenet of microfinance: the need for lending programs to be managed locally in order to understand the needs of a community and assess …

Financial Services Innovation: Local Strategy, Management, And Change – A Field Investigation, Ann-Catherine Nave

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This study examines the innovation sources and processes of regional financial services firms through inductive field research. Innovation in these firms, and presumably other financial services firms and other smaller organizations, originate primarily out of three sources, the drive for efficiency, the external environment, and strategic, ambidextrous management. Successfully innovative firms balance the short-term need for efficiency improvements with the long-term desire to grow primarily through visionary, yet adaptive, leadership.

Despite the fact that the Italian legal system allows only four casinos to operate, contradictory State polices throughout the years have …

Perception Of Macao Teachers And Students Regarding Gaming Operators' Social Responsibility, Fanny Vong

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

The study brings to the forefront a discussion of corporate social responsibility of gaming operators. It assessed Macao high school students' and teachers' perceptions of the extent of social responsibility being exercised by the six local gaming operators, as well as their support for the operators, and desire for further gaming investment and work opportunities in the gaming sector. The majority of the respondents were not aware of gaming operators exercising socially responsible activities. Among those who were, the majority perceived that only one company was involved and none has participated in protecting the environment, beautifying the city, creating a …

Estimating The Effect Of The 2003 Gaming Tax Restructuring On Riverboat Gaming Volume, Mikael Ahlgren, Michael C. Dalbor, Ashok Singh Dec 2012

Estimating The Effect Of The 2003 Gaming Tax Restructuring On Riverboat Gaming Volume, Mikael Ahlgren, Michael C. Dalbor, Ashok Singh

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper analyzes the effect of the 2003 Illinois gaming tax increase on gaming demand. To model gaming demand, slot machine coin-in is chosen for the period January 2000 to December 2006. Multiple regression analysis is used to model both the tax increase and account for seasonality in the data. A Box Jenkins model was employed to address correlation of error terms. The findings reveal that Illinois experienced a decrease in gaming demand when the tax increases took effect. The findings indicate that legislators should acknowledge and evaluate the negative economic pressures tax increases have on the gaming industry.

Examining Resident Perceptions Of Negative Gambling Impacts With Factual Evidence, Deepak Chhabra Dec 2012

Examining Resident Perceptions Of Negative Gambling Impacts With Factual Evidence, Deepak Chhabra

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study attempts to establish a dialogue between perceived negative impacts associated with borrowing money to gamble and the resulting bankruptcies in three ways: matching local resident opinions with evidence they are asked to provide; determining causal effects of evidence on perceptions; and confirming the bankruptcy issues by using historical data. The results of the study are mixed. On one hand, they indicate a close tie between borrowing perceptions and real facts. However, on the other hand, they also report that bankruptcy related perceptions are not based on evidence and suggest that several factors are at play besides the casino …

The Emotional Impact Of Casino Servicescape, Hei-Lim (Michael) Lio, Raymond Rody Dec 2012

The Emotional Impact Of Casino Servicescape, Hei-Lim (Michael) Lio, Raymond Rody

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study investigates the emotional impact of casino servicescape among Chinese table games gambling participants, and its impact on their approach/avoidance behavior. Data on casino servicescape, pleasure, arousal and dominance emotion (PAD) and approach/avoidance responses were obtained from 158 Chinese gamblers in Macau and analyzed using path analysis. The results of this study suggest that aesthetic factors within servicescape significantly influence the customers' perception of the overall servicescape quality. While gambling facilitating factors within servicescape have significant impact on PAD emotions, they are not significant components of the perceived overall servicescape quality. Both overall servicescape quality and PAD emotions have …

Gambling Windfall Decisions: Lottery Winners And Employment Behavior, Bengt Furaker, Anna Hedenus Dec 2012

Gambling Windfall Decisions: Lottery Winners And Employment Behavior, Bengt Furaker, Anna Hedenus

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Based on a 2005 survey among Swedish lottery winners, the article throws new light on what those receiving a sudden windfall do with their existing jobs. Many may continue to work as before the winning, but others may alter their work situation in one way or another. We focus on three possible changes: (i) quitting the job; (ii) going on unpaid full-time leave; and (iii) shortening one's working hours. In our study less than 12% quit working, approximately 24% took unpaid full-time leave, 16% reduced their working hours, but 62% did not make any of these changes. In other words, …

Exploring Casino Impact Perceptions Of A Unique Population, Deepak Chhabra

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study is an investigation of the impact perceptions of Social Service Providers, Law Enforcement Officers, and Economic Development Officers to acquire a wide spectrum of community views. In doing so, this study advances the literature by examining this unique population's perceptions of casino gambling impacts and factors driving those perceptions, and their support for casinos in general using the social exchange theory framework. The results suggest that officers who have worked with gamblers tend to agree more with the economic benefits. A partial support for social exchange theory is also noted. The results have important implications for the casino …

High Rollers From Mainland China: A Profile Based On 99 Cases, Zhonglu Zeng, David Forrest

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

Macao's casinos win a high proportion of their revenue from high rollers from Mainland China but some of these generate social problems back home. We analyze 99 cases of high rollers whose activities came to media attention, building a profile of them based on information in the reports. They were mainly from areas near Macao or from particularly rich regions of China. Most were male, aged 30- 49. They tended to be government officials, managers of state-owned businesses or owners of private enterprises. They lost as much as US$12.08 million on a single trip. Their average accumulated loss amounted to …

An Analysis Of Gambling Expenditure Across Countries, Chan Boon Patrick Lee Dec 2012

An Analysis Of Gambling Expenditure Across Countries, Chan Boon Patrick Lee

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This study hypothesized that gambling expenditure across countries was positively related to income and negatively related to uncertainty avoidance. Statistical analyses using secondary data were conducted to test the hypotheses. The results of a multivariate linear regression using income and uncertainty avoidance as the independent variables and gambling expenditure as the dependent variable showed that the two independent variables were significantly related to gambling expenditure. The two independent variables explained 56 percent of the variance in the dependent variable. An exponential model with only income as the independent variable, however, accounted for 72 percent of the variance in gambling expenditure. …

Toward Legalization Of Poker: The Skill Vs. Chance Debate, Robert C. Hannum, Anthony N. Cabot Dec 2012

Toward Legalization Of Poker: The Skill Vs. Chance Debate, Robert C. Hannum, Anthony N. Cabot

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

This paper sheds light on the age-old argument as to whether poker is a game in which skill predominates over chance or vice versa. Recent work addressing the issue of skill vs. chance is reviewed. This current study considers two different scenarios to address the issue: 1) a mathematical analysis supported by computer simulations of one random player and one skilled player in Texas Hold'Em, and 2) full-table simulation games of Texas Hold'Em and Seven Card Stud. Findings for scenario 1 showed the skilled player winning 97 percent of the hands. Findings for scenario 2 further reinforced that highly skilled …
