MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015
Finger Lakes ReUse (FLR) has been steadily growing since opening the doors to its ReUse Center in 2008. Managing the daily flow of donations is challenging due to limited space and other constraints. yet, FLR must address its donation management processes as the sales from donations cover organizational expenses and allow the organization to maintain financial stability. This project seeks to identify how FLR can increase its revenues and sustainability by …

A Quality Metric For Sustainable Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
A Quality Metric For Sustainable Innovations, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu
Arcot Desai NARASIMHALU
Sustainability has become a major concern for nations and firms especially since the Kyoto Protocol was defined in 1997. While there have been several studies on benchmarks for national innovation systems and effectiveness of innovation management within firms there is as yet no reasonable metric for determining the quality of an innovation much less its quality relating to sustainability? Similarly, there have been several studies on sustainability but that such research groups have also not focused on developing a metric for denoting the quality of sustainable innovations. This paper offers a metric that defines the quality of an innovation, especially …

Dominican Resort Tourism, Sustainability, And Millennium Development Goals, Vinod Sasidharan, Marilyn E. Hall
Journal of Tourism Insights
The tourism industry continues to be touted as the main income and employment generator for Caribbean nations. In the Dominican Republic (DR), international tourism has become one of the largest industries and is a major contributor to the country’s economic growth. A recent trend in the DR is the development of luxurious residential resort complexes and private resort cities, mainly designed and created for foreign ownership. The Dominican government support for such projects has been very strong due to the economic propensity of these high-end resorts to assist the country in generating local opportunities for stable employment, creating basic infrastructure, …

The push for businesses to become more sustainable is a market-driven phenomenon in which consumers are increasingly shopping for products and services provided by companies that practice sustainability. Large multinational corporations are placing greater pressure …
Sustainability In Clothing Supply Chains: Implications For Marketing, Sudhindra Seshadri
Sustainability In Clothing Supply Chains: Implications For Marketing, Sudhindra Seshadri
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Recommendations for sustainability strategies for business have predominantly taken an individual firm level perspective. Yet, sustainability efforts are by essence collaborative and span firm level boundaries. Multiple stakeholders espousing often divergent goals need to work together over long periods on sustainability collaborations. Well recognized externalities in the firm’s economic existence need to be addressed by multiple stakeholder skill sets and are fraught with high risks and uncertainties. These are conditions ripe for syndication, as financial and corporate syndicates have demonstrated. The rules of syndication cover the structure of membership, setting of goals and objectives, governance, incentives and sharing of rewards and …
Roger Williams Park Edible Forest Garden, Mark S. Scialla
Roger Williams Park Edible Forest Garden, Mark S. Scialla
Senior Honors Projects
An edible forest garden is a low-maintenance system that uses edible native and regionally-adapted plants arranged in beneficial relationships to meet human, wildlife and ecosystem needs. The forest garden in Roger Williams Park will transform underutilized urban land into a highly productive parcel producing market-viable fruits, nuts, vegetables, medicine and fiber. Forest gardens mimic natural forest systems in architecture and complexity. The design follows ecological principles to create a system that promotes biodiversity and enhances the surrounding ecosystem. This project also demonstrates the potential to grow food and create land-based livelihoods in the city.

We examine the link between the social and technical dimensions of innovation and identify how the scope of our definition is important in delineating our phenomena of interest. Some of the earlier academic work on …

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
The economic and political outcomes of market globalization continue to be complex. As international corporations engage developing markets, they increasingly find consumers who lack market sophistication, meaningful purchasing options and economic leverage. Such conditions are ripe for the exploitation of these market segments but also can be mitigated by enlightened managers willing to thoughtfully consider their ethical and professional obligations to vulnerable consumers. This paper builds on a normative ethical framework, labeled the integrative justice model (IJM) for impoverished markets that was introduced in the marketing and public policy literature. Specifically, the paper will extend the normative ethics of the …

Process Vs. Performance Standards For Sustainable Meeting And Event Management, Andrew Stephen Walker
Transnational Business Governance Interactions Working Papers
This paper examines two emerging voluntary industry standards — the process-based ISO 20121 Event sustainability management systems and the performance-based APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standard — and examines whether they can complement, rather than compete with, each other to provide a comprehensive approach to the complex task of managing and measuring sustainability within meetings and events. A framework for analysis was developed through examining the academic literature on competition between process and performance-based sustainability standards within the forestry sector where several internationally-recognized standards have interacted in the marketplace for over a decade. Three criteria — legitimacy, accountability and effectiveness — …

Economic growth is probably the most important goal of every policy intervention because of its wide consequences on the welfare of current and future generations. Because of the current crisis faced by several industrialized countries, this is probably much clearer today than in the past. In order to determine whether and which kind of public intervention can be taken to restore the growth process, the first step is understanding the relationship between different factors and economic growth. The goal of this brief paper is to shed some light on the mutual implications of growth and some of these factors: demography, …

Residential energy consumption is now an important component of total energy consumption and its related emissions. In addition, this consumption has significant potential for growth in both developed and developing countries, as average incomes increase, and domestic appliance numbers rise. Reduction in this energy use may be achieved both through conservation measures, and through increased efficiency in its use. This paper focuses on energy efficiency in appliances-those many devices through which household energy is consumed. The policy instruments available to promote the uptake of more efficient devices, and issues associated with their use, are reviewed, drawing on developed country experiences to …

This empirical research explores the opinions of Smart car owners in a focus group study. Smart car owners are primarily focused on reducing their costs due to difficult …

The Emergence Of A Standards Market: Multiplicity Of Sustainability Standards In The Global Coffee Industry, Juliane Reinecke, Stephan Manning, Oliver Von Hagen
Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series
The growing number of voluntary standards for governing transnational arenas is presenting standards organizations with a problem. While claiming that they are pursuing shared, overarching objectives, at the same time, they are promoting their own respective standards that are increasingly similar. By developing the notion of ‘standards markets,’ this paper examines this tension and studies how different social movement and industry-driven standards organizations compete as well as collaborate over governance in transnational arenas. Based on an in-depth case study of sustainability standards in the global coffee industry, we find that the ongoing co-existence of multiple standards is being promoted by …
