El Impacto De Micro-Crédito En Superar La Pobreza, Magda Tsaneva Oct 2005

El Impacto De Micro-Crédito En Superar La Pobreza, Magda Tsaneva

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The present study is a microeconomic investigation, based on personal interviews with different microentrepreneurs and functionaries of credit institutions. It evaluates the impact of micro-credit, investigates the challenges the micro-credit programs have to confront, and suggests some potential improvements. In a qualitative analysis the following conclusions have been reached: the micro-credit is very limited in scope, it is not focused on really poor people, and neither has it been effective in helping the beneficiaries it has had to grow. Thus, while micro-credit has had many positive effects and has been useful to maintain and develop the microenterprise sector, it has …

Regret And The Control Of Temporary Preferences, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb Oct 2005

Regret And The Control Of Temporary Preferences, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Regret is often symptomatic of the defective decisions associated with temporary preference problems. It may also help overcome these defects. Outcome regret can modify the relative utilities of different payoffs. Process regret can motivate search for better decision processes or trap-evading strategies. Heightened regret may thus be functional for control of these self-defeating choices.

Purpose: To discuss the effectiveness of a sustainable entrepreneurship training program in several countries in Asia, used by global firms to identify junior management talent, by applying the PETE model of creating an engaging action-learning program. Design/Methodology/Approach: Current literature is reviewed to make a case for the applicability of action-learning based entrepreneurship training. The results of interviews with more than 20 senior level managers of multi-national corporations in 5 Asian countries are compared to self-evaluations of more than 300 student participants and more than 30 faculty evaluations of the program. The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens Oct 2005

The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors derive the exact sampling distribution function of the adverse impact (AI) ratio for single-stage, top-down selections using tests with known effect sizes. Subsequently, it is shown how this distribution function can be used to determine the risk that a future selection decision on the basis of such tests will result in an outcome that reflects the presence of AI. The article therefore provides test and selection practitioners with a valuable tool to decide between alternative selection predictors.

Drug Testing In Baseball And Worldwide, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2005

Drug Testing In Baseball And Worldwide, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The United States Congress is making noises again over the issue of drug use in sports and, as usual, taking aim at steroids in baseball. In The Clean Sports Act, sponsored by Sen. McCain and Rep. Tom Davis, there is a call for stronger penalties for drug violations in baseball. This bill would institute a two-year ban for first offenders and a lifetime ban for second offenders, a penalty system adopted from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, in sandbagging the Players' Association, also called for an independent testing agency and his coyly phrased "Three Strikes and …

Culture, Ethics, And Values In The Banking System, Ishrat Husain Dr. Sep 2005

Culture, Ethics, And Values In The Banking System, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

When I addressed you for the first time on March 25, 2000, we were in a despondent and gloomy mood. The economy was stagnant, external debt payment difficulties were pervasive and the financial soundness indicators of the banking system in Pakistan were quite worrisome. Public sector owned and managed banks dominated the system with its peculiar bureaucratic culture, indifferent service standards, laid back and lethargic business practices and narrow product range. The Government of Pakistan was underwriting the losses of these banks out of its scarce budgetary resources. Average lending rates hovered around 15 to 16 percent, credit growth to …

Great Tennis At The 2005 Us Open, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2005

Great Tennis At The 2005 Us Open, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Thirty years ago the country was in a tennis frenzy. Television had discovered the sport and colorful and attractive personalities seemed to be in an endless supply as they paraded before the cameras. Public tennis courts were overcrowded with people from seven to seventy. At the indoor courts of the major cities you were lucky to be able to get a reservation to play between three and four o'clock in the morning. Manufacturers of tennis equipment were making money hand over fist, and the tennis ball factories working around the clock (what we would now term 24/7), could not meet …

Steroids, Success, And Ethics, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This week Rafael Palmeiro met the wrath of the Canadian baseball public in Toronto where he was booed loud and long for either lying to the Congress and the public, his steroid use, or both. This is the most severe crowd disapproval he has experienced and he found it quite difficult to endure. Even the use of ear plugs did not seem to help.

Common Fare: An Example Of “Blanket” Rates In Hawai’I Waterborne Trade, Henry S. Marcus, H David Bess, Michael E. Valdez Sep 2005

Common Fare: An Example Of “Blanket” Rates In Hawai’I Waterborne Trade, Henry S. Marcus, H David Bess, Michael E. Valdez

Journal of Transportation Management

Blanket” rate structures apply uniform rates to a geographical region in spite of differences in the costs of carrying the goods. They are generally utilized by carriers to achieve some strategic objective, whether rate simplification, to be more competitive, or to meet some political objectives. While blanket rates are common in land transportation, the Hawai’i waterborne trade offers a unique example of this pricing mechanism. Further, given new and potential competitive factors in this trade, this is a unique case study for those interested in transportation pricing and the economic impacts of changes in the competitive struct ure in an …

Firing And Conspiring At Existo’S Springfield Operation: Parts A & B, Jason Mirabella, Barry Armandi, Herbert Sherman

Organization Management Journal

Firing a sales staff which acts in an immoral and illegal manner may appear to be an easy solution, but, as the staff at Existo’s finds out, is only the tip of the iceberg of the company’s real problems. Students are confronted in this two-part case with two critical decision points: In Part A one of Existo’s customers has in her possession a seemingly fraudulent letter from one of the exsalesman from the Springfield operation which offered the customer a higher discount than the original contract agreement. Students are asked how to proceed from the CFO’s perspective given the firm’s …

Finding Ob In Disney's Finding Nemo, Rayshad A. Holmes

Organization Management Journal

One of the greatest challenges faced by new professors and those aspiring to become members of the academy is the consistent need to illustrate organizational behavior concepts to undergraduate students (Hunt, 2001). Most of today’s undergraduate population find themselves encased in a world permeated with fashion, music and little understanding of business principles. For this reason, it is incumbent upon business faculty members to continually create new and inspiring teaching interventions that illustrate business principles and concepts in action. From 12 Angry Men to The Brady Bunch, management faculty have enhanced the learning process of under-graduates with cinema that highlights …

Weaver’S Cove Energy Versus The City Of Fall River, Massachusetts: An Experience In The Concepts Of Stakeholders, Economic Impact, And Social Obligation/Social Responsibility, Susan M. Bosco, W. Brett Mckenzie, Kathleen S. Micken Sep 2005

Weaver’S Cove Energy Versus The City Of Fall River, Massachusetts: An Experience In The Concepts Of Stakeholders, Economic Impact, And Social Obligation/Social Responsibility, Susan M. Bosco, W. Brett Mckenzie, Kathleen S. Micken

Organization Management Journal

This experiential exercise, designed for our introductory business course, uses a classroom debate to teach the concepts of stakeholders, social obligation/social responsibility, and ethical frameworks for decision-making. The basis for the debate is the request by Weaver’s Cove Energy to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Fall River, Massachusetts. Weaver’s Cove has proposed the facility for an abandoned industrial site on the waterfront. The exercise addresses the three learning goals listed above through readings, position construction, and the debate itself. The rationale for the assignment and the chosen pedagogy are presented. Additionally, the materials used to …

Looking Beyond The Shipyard: Economic Development Challenges Of Southern Maine And Seacoast New Hampshire, Charles S. Colgan

Regional Studies

The threatened closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has spurred an intense examination of the future economic prospects for York County, Maine and Rockingham County, New Hampshire. This report provides the first integrated analysis of the shipyard’s effects on both the Maine and New Hampshire economies. The shipyard accounts for more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs across the two-state region. Over 80% of these jobs are in York County, with an additional 10% in Rockingham County and the balance spread through the rest of Maine and New Hampshire. The total jobs associated with the shipyard account for 3.5% of …

Perceptual Differences Between Shippers And Motor Carriers Regarding The Importance Of Carrier Selection Criteria, Shane R. Premeaux, Lonnie Phelps Sep 2005

Perceptual Differences Between Shippers And Motor Carriers Regarding The Importance Of Carrier Selection Criteria, Shane R. Premeaux, Lonnie Phelps

Journal of Transportation Management

The primary focus of this study is the identification of significant differences in the assessment of the importance of 36 carrier selection variables by both carriers and shippers. This study is based on the original 1992 investigation. Currently, statistically significant differences resulted between shipper and carrier mean ratings for nine of the thirty-six selection criteria. In the original study, there were significant differences for nineteen of thirty-five selection variables. The rating and ranking discrepancies in this study indicate that shippers and carriers do not classify the importance of some selection variables similarly, but carrier understanding seems to be improving. Carriers …

Dispatching Continuous Moves, David Ronen Sep 2005

Dispatching Continuous Moves, David Ronen

Journal of Transportation Management

Continuous Moves (CM) is a term coined by the trucking industry. This paper defines CM’s, classifies them and discusses their economies. A unifying mathematical optimization model for dispatching orders is then presented. The model selects the best way to dispatch each and every order, whether as a part of a CM or not. However, the model does consider all the feasible types of CM’s. Practical aspects associated with implementing CM’s are also discussed.

The Global Supply Chain: Challenges And Solutions, Carol J. Johnson, Paul Nuzum Sep 2005

The Global Supply Chain: Challenges And Solutions, Carol J. Johnson, Paul Nuzum

Journal of Transportation Management

While there have been independent examinations of several of the changes that affect the supply chain, to date there has been little in the way of studies that holistically examine the changes facing front line supply chain managers today and the solutions they have implemented to address those changes. Supply chain executives have been interviewed in depth to better understand how manufacturing or distribution network changes, technology implementation, corporate re-structuring and/or increasing customer demands have been addressed in the field. An understanding of the challenges and successes faced by Global 1000 firms as they address these changes should help others …
