Change As A Catalyst Leading To Corporate Social Innovation: Reflections On The Canadian Society’S Efforts To Promote Csi, Zeinab Shawky Younis
Business Administration
The only constant fact of life is change; whether leaders accept it or not, organizations practice it or not it is there. It will be always a transition that any institution passes through during its process of development. The paradigm shift of management and the rise of new concepts and directions in its processes and practices acted as a catalyst of change during our century. This transition from one state to the other or what we call “Change” due to internal as well as external factors and complexities of our Management environment acted by its turn as a catalyst boosting …

The Communication Conundrum Exercise: Pedagogy For Project-Based Learning, Linda S. Henderson, Keith O. Hunter
The Communication Conundrum Exercise: Pedagogy For Project-Based Learning, Linda S. Henderson, Keith O. Hunter
Organization Management Journal
Many professionals spend a significant amount of their time managing and supporting project teams. To help students learn how to work in this environment, we present the Communication Conundrum Exercise (CCE). The CCE challenges students to solve a symbol-identification problem with tension from hierarchical controls and narrowly defined rules for communication. Students assume roles that correspond to the major roles found on real-life hybrid project teams, and work with the triple constraint triangle common in project management. We provide the rationale for the CCE and the method and results of our analyses from 126 management students in 26 groups, and …

Beverly Matthews, Russell Clayton, Michael T. Stratton, Mark Julien, John H. Humphreys
Organization Management Journal
This case describes the difficult challenges facing Beverly Matthews as she returned to the workforce after taking time from paid employment in order to spend time with her two children. She desired a workplace that would give her the flexibility to excel in both the work and family domains. Beverly specifically chose the organization because of its award-winning family-friendly reputation and the positive word of mouth from a friend who worked there. Unfortunately, she has encountered a supervisor whose values conflict with the values of Beverly and the organization. Beverly is contemplating her options as the status quo has become …
Improving Organizational Responses To Sexual Harassment Using The Giving Voice To Values Approach, Stacie F. Chappell, Lynn Bowes-Sperry
Improving Organizational Responses To Sexual Harassment Using The Giving Voice To Values Approach, Stacie F. Chappell, Lynn Bowes-Sperry
Organization Management Journal
Despite significant expenditures on organizational responses to sexual harassment, it remains a persistent challenge. We argue that the legal environment has unduly and negatively influenced the ways in which organizations address the problem of sexual harassment and offer an alternative. Giving Voice to Values (GVV) is an action-oriented approach to business ethics education that can be used to improve the ways in which organizations address the phenomenon of sexual harassment (SH). Because of its focus on action and expressing personal values, GVV can be used to prepare targets, observers, and managers to intervene in instances where they may encounter this …
A Managerial Perspective On Risk And Return For Corporate Innovation Projects, Kimberly K. Merriman, Dae-Il Nam
A Managerial Perspective On Risk And Return For Corporate Innovation Projects, Kimberly K. Merriman, Dae-Il Nam
Organization Management Journal
Virtually all companies today pursue innovation in order to remain competitive. The question facing corporate decision makers is not whether to innovate, but rather which projects to pursue. Conventional wisdom suggests high-risk projects provide the highest returns. We explore this notion with attention to the patent output from a cross-sectional sample of U.S. corporate innovation projects. Project risk is assessed upon project proposal using a managerial perspective. The manager viewpoint is an important one since managers are distinct in their approach to assessing risk, as we expound, and are often the initial filtering point for project proposals. Patent counts are …

University Technology Transfer Information Processing From The Attention Based View, Clovia Hamilton
University Technology Transfer Information Processing From The Attention Based View, Clovia Hamilton
Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications
Between 2005 and 2011, there was no substantial growth in licenses executed by university technology transfer offices. Since the passage of the Bayh Dole Act of 1980, universities have owned technological inventions afforded by federal research funding. There are still university technology transfer offices that struggle with increasing their licensing revenues. There is a persistent underperformance by university technology transfer offices. This paper makes the contribution of advocating the novel use of cognitive thinking’s attention based view to university technology transfer in order to resolve this problem. The attention based view teaches that human attention is limited and organizations are …

An Analysis Of The Financial Impact Of Certified And Classified Employee Absenteeism Rates At A Mid-South Kentucky School District, Milli A. Mcintosh
Dissertations
This study examined absenteeism of both certified and classified employees (N = 429), to include teachers, administrators, and support staff, and selected demographic variables in one school district consisting of the following: one high school, three elementary schools, one middle school, one alternative school, one transportation department, one maintenance department, and a central office. The variables include gender, ethnicity, years of service, particular and total days missed.
The design of the quantitative study was based on secondary data analysis that encompassed running descriptive statistics for the purpose of determining the frequency of employee absence and the overall costs. An analysis …
Employee Behavioral Intention And Technology Use: Mediating Processes And Individual Difference Moderators, Robert Conrad Brusso
Employee Behavioral Intention And Technology Use: Mediating Processes And Individual Difference Moderators, Robert Conrad Brusso
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Considering the substantial amount of time and organizational resources that are involved in the development and implementation of end-user technology (e.g., communication software platforms, social networking sites) within organizations, it is imperative to understand the factors that best predict use of end-user software. Although technology acceptance models, grounded in broader theories of behavior, do exist, these models fall-short in determining the most proximal antecedents of actual behavior. Currently, the majority of the research in the information technology arena posits behavioral intention as the most proximal antecedent of technology use. Behavioral intention does explain variance in use, but this relationship has …
An Evaluation Of Game Fiction-Enhanced Training: Using Narrative To Improve Trainee Reactions And Learning, Michael Beaumont Armstrong
An Evaluation Of Game Fiction-Enhanced Training: Using Narrative To Improve Trainee Reactions And Learning, Michael Beaumont Armstrong
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Gamification is growing in popularity in instructional contexts like education and workplace training, but it is unclear which game elements are specifically conducive to improve learning outcomes. Narratives, which represent one way the game element “game fiction” is commonly implemented, have been used to improve learning outcomes over expository texts in the context of psycholinguistics, whereas the Technology-Enhanced Training Effectiveness Model (TETEM) proposes that certain individual differences impact the relationships between technology-enhanced training and learning outcomes. From this theoretical basis, this study gamified a training session with game fiction in order to improve reactions to training and learning over the …
Dwelling In Time, Dwelling In Structures: Disintegration In World Politics, Jan Adam Nalaskowski
Dwelling In Time, Dwelling In Structures: Disintegration In World Politics, Jan Adam Nalaskowski
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation aims to propose a general theory of disintegration. This subject is not treated directly by some theoretical accounts and mistreated by others. European integration theories are fashioned to explain the greater integration process while game-theoretic approaches to withdrawals and secessions, even if treating disintegration directly, fail to include critically responsible factors. This dissertation offers a constructive criticism of both accounts. Since neither turning integration theories symmetrically around nor direct, game-theoretic assessment of disintegration help to provide sufficient explanation, it is suggested that the problem of symmetrical reversal and rational conduct must be revised.
Disintegration fails to follow the …

By Any Other Name: Image Advertising And The Commercial Speech Doctrine In Jordan V. Jewel, Kelly Miller
Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review
This Comment focuses on the commercial speech doctrine as applied to modern advertising strategies, specifically, corporate image advertising. It centers on the recent litigation between basketball superstar Michael Jordan and a Chicago-area grocery chain, Jewel-Osco. When Michael Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, Jewel-Osco was invited to submit a congratulatory ad for a commemorative issue of Sports Illustrated devoted exclusively to Jordan’s career and accomplishments. Because Jordan had spent the bulk of his storied professional basketball career with the Chicago Bulls, the ad seemed a natural fit. Jordan, who did not give permission for his name to …

"You Wouldn't Like Me When I'M Sleepy": Leader Sleep, Daily Abusive Supervision, And Work Unit Engagement, Christopher M. Barnes, Lorenzo Lucianetti, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Michael S. Christian
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We examine daily leader sleep as an antecedent to daily abusive supervisory behavior and work unit engagement. Drawing from ego depletion theory, our theoretical extension includes a serial mediation model of nightly sleep quantity and quality as predictors of abusive supervision. We argue that poor nightly sleep influences leaders to enact daily abusive behaviors via ego depletion, and these abusive behaviors ultimately result in decreased daily subordinate unit work engagement. We test this model through an experience sampling study spread over ten work days with data from both supervisors and their subordinates. Our study supports the role of the indirect …

Leading Authentically: Overcoming The Mind-Boggling Consequences Of Mindless Leadership, Thomas Menkhoff
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The extent of fake leadership and management behaviour in business and society is mind-boggling as indicated by the large number of corporate non-compliance cases and trust violations. Examples include the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the damaged reputation of UK-based pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline as a consequence of a bribery case in China or the recent class action lawsuit related to price-fixing of tickets for trans-Pacific flights.
A Game Theory Analysis Of Team Based Incentivization In Retailing, Don Shemwell
A Game Theory Analysis Of Team Based Incentivization In Retailing, Don Shemwell
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
The connection between incentives and outcomes has long found consistent support in management literature generally (Bartol and Hagmann 1992; Miller & Schuster 1993; Swinehart 1986) and retailing in particular (Banker et al. 1996; Team Pay Case Studies 1997). Later meta-studies strongly support this view. (Condly, Noe and Jackson 2002; Garbers and Konradt 2014). Yet, providing performance-based incentives, at least for rank and file retail employees, still is not common in U.S. retailing and team-based incentives are even rarer.
The next section of this manuscript describes some of the issues with individualized commissions, which though not prevalent in a many product …

Collegiate Competition And The Propensity For Gender Bias, Deborah H. Lester, Aberdeen Leila Borders, Terry W. Loe, Keith Tudor
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Since the dawn of time gender has played a starring role in human behavior. The behavioral implications of an individual’s sex have permeated research findings in a wide variety of academic disciplines. This preliminary investigation will explore the concept and definition of gender, gender bias, and gender stereotype on actions and conduct. Specifically, this inquiry will determine the scope and types of gender bias/stereotypes that exist in the business world with a primary concentration on the area of professional sales. The ultimate objective is to discover the type and level of influence a person’s gender contributes to evaluation, performance and …

Do Our Graduates Know What Companies Are Seeking In An Employee, And, Perhaps More Importantly, Do We?, Michael A. Jones, George Stone, April Kemp
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
University marketing faculty teach and embrace a concept referred to as the Marketing Concept, which places an emphasis on customer needs as a central focus in managing the marketing effort. Understanding customer needs through marketing research is thus essential to the process. If college marketing programs are to prepare students for their customers, the companies that hiring these students, the question then follows: do college marketing faculty and college marketing graduates know what qualities employers are seeking? This exploratory study reports the results of a survey of employers who were attending a Career Fair at a Southeastern US state …

College Students Use Social Networking Sites For Sharing With Friends, But Guess Who Else Is Looking?, Liz Alexander, Fred Mader, Deanna Mader
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Jobvite, a recruiting platform for the social web, reports from their annual 2012 survey of recruiters that 92% of U.S. companies are using social networking sites (SNS) for hiring purposes (Jobvit, 2012). Career Builder reported in 2009 that 45% of employers were using SNS to screen and research applicants (CareerBuilder, 2009). It is important that faculty and support staff working to place students, and the students themselves, understand the developments and practices in the use of social networking sites for job search and recruiting and the best methods, as well as detriments when marketing themselves. This study examines corporate recruiters’, …

Profile Of Corporate Social Media Consumer Segments, Beverly Wright, Aberdeen Leila Borders, Paul H. Schwager, S. Scott Nadler
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
The trade and academic literature is replete with commentary about the need for companies to develop promotional strategies and to adopt media platforms that are more engaging and conversational with customers than the traditional top-down company directed one-way communication strategies of the past (Thomas, Peters, Howell and Robbins, 2012; Foster, West and Francescucci 2011; Deighton and Kornfeld, 2009). This viewpoint is supported by Christodoulides (2008) who reported that many customers view information about a company or brand that they obtained from blogs, social networking sites and the like as being more relevant, believable and important to them in their interactions …

The Clothing Swap: Social, Sustainable, And Sacred, Mary M. Long, Deborah Fain
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
While there is much focus on recycling household waste such as paper, plastic, and metal, there is less focused attention on the waste produced by clothing and textiles. As noted by Joung (2013), consumers dispose of clothes by recycling, donating to charities, or giving to friends and family. But when individuals are not motivated to do this or are unaware of recycling options, they simply discard unwanted clothing where it ends up in landfill sites.
Motives for recycling clothes can range from altruistic (e.g., donating to a clothing drive for the poor or victims of a natural disaster) to economic …
Contolling And Informational Planned Behavior: Self-Determination Theory And The Theory Of Planned Behavior, J. Paul Leavell
Contolling And Informational Planned Behavior: Self-Determination Theory And The Theory Of Planned Behavior, J. Paul Leavell
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Self-determination theory (SDT) is a paradigm of human motivation and an approach to personality that focuses on an individual’s psychological needs and how those needs interact with self motivation (Ryan and Deci, 2000). SDT explores the foundation of intrinsic motivation (Deci and Ryan, 1985) which can be applied as marketing theory. Additionally this theory offers the opportunity for comparison and integration with the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Deci and Ryan (1985) published this theory within the same year that Ajzen (1985) published the theory of planned behavior (TPB). While SDT has a predominantly intrinsic focus, TPB maintains a primarily …
Egyptian Teachers’ Burnout: The Role Of Work Environment Characteristics And Job Stress, Sahar Mohamed Badawy
Egyptian Teachers’ Burnout: The Role Of Work Environment Characteristics And Job Stress, Sahar Mohamed Badawy
Business Administration
Recent research has pinpointed the serious effects of job burnout on both personal life and productivity in work. Yet, there is a gap in the research directed to service professions in developing countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between work environment, stress and burnout within the Egyptian context. The research proposes that stress mediates the relationship between work environment characteristics and burnout. An explanatory model was tested for the hypothesized relationships. The study was conducted on 325 Egyptian teachers with a response rate of 79.9% (250 teacher). The proposed model included 10 work environment components measured …
