Merging Cultures: Organizational Behavior, Leadership, And Differentiation In A Health System Merger, Colin G. Chesley
Merging Cultures: Organizational Behavior, Leadership, And Differentiation In A Health System Merger, Colin G. Chesley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Health system mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have increased exponentially in recent years as a result of the Affordable Care Act (Brown, Werling, Walker, Burgdorfer & Shields, 2012). M&As are consummated as a way to control for interdependencies within the market, control costs and leverage debt, and negotiate better rates among health insurers (Bolman & Deal, 2013; Cooper & Finkelstein, 2010; Mirc, 2013). Regardless of the impetus for a merger, the largest predictor of the success or failure of a M&A lies within the organizational culture (Brown, et al., 2012; Cooper & Finkelstein, 2010; Kastor, 2010; Ovseiko, Melham, Fowler & Buchan, …

Creating Sustainable Supply Chains: Influencing Sustainable Practices In The Supply Chain, Saif Mir
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Organizations worldwide are reporting their commitment to create sustainable supply chains. Ultimately, supply chain professionals are the drivers of change within their respective organizations, so this dissertation examines the role of communication as a tool to persuade supply chain professionals to create sustainable supply chains. The three studies within this dissertation employ different methodologies to examine the role of communication in the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives. The first study, a grounded theory investigation, highlights the network, communication, and structural factors that provide a strong business case for the development of sustainability initiatives. A strong business case influences the …

OBJECTIVES: To describe the curriculum of the AACN CSI Academy that provides staff nurses with the leadership skills required to create unit-based change projects that positively impact patient/family outcomes.
METHODS: The curriculum of the Academy included leadership topics, communication, change concepts, quality …
A Closer Look At The Measurement Of Dispositional Reasoning: Dimensionality And Invariance Across Assessor Groups, François S. De Kock, Filip Lievens, Marise Ph. Born
A Closer Look At The Measurement Of Dispositional Reasoning: Dimensionality And Invariance Across Assessor Groups, François S. De Kock, Filip Lievens, Marise Ph. Born
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Despite the growing interest in dispositional reasoning as a construct and determinant of good raters (good judges'), its measurement still requires attention. We address two measurement issues in the present study. First, this study tests a hierarchical model as a more parsimonious account for dispositional reasoning than component- or general-factor models that were examined in earlier studies. So, this provides a more comprehensive test of the different measurement models underlying dispositional reasoning data. Second, we assess the measurement invariance of dispositional reasoning measure scores across two different populations of assessors that are often trained and used in workplace assessments, namely …
Configuring Innovative Societies: The Crossvergent Role Of Cultural And Institutional Varieties, Di Fan, Yi Li, Liang Chen
Configuring Innovative Societies: The Crossvergent Role Of Cultural And Institutional Varieties, Di Fan, Yi Li, Liang Chen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The study aims to explore why some societies are more innovative than others in high-technology sectors. Following a crossvergence perspective, we generate nine causal conditions by accommodating both cultural and institutional varieties: uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, individualism and power distance as culture indicators, and union density, skill development, market capitalization to credit, prevalence of cluster and state dominance as institutional indicators. Applying the configurational approach, we conducted fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries. We confirm the equal importance of both cultural and institutional mechanisms as contributors to national innovativeness, and identify equifinal …
Economic Downturns Undermine Workplace Helping By Promoting A Zero-Sum Construal Of Success, Nina Sirola, Marko Pitesa
Economic Downturns Undermine Workplace Helping By Promoting A Zero-Sum Construal Of Success, Nina Sirola, Marko Pitesa
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Workplace helping is essential to the success of organizations and economies. Given the economic benefits of helping, it seems important that during difficult economic periods the amount of helping does not decline. In this research, we propose and show that it does. We argue that cues that signal the economy is performing poorly prompt a construal that the success of one person implies less success for others. This zero-sum construal of success in turn makes employees less inclined to help. Four studies found evidence consistent with our theory. Study 1 found that worse economic periods are associated with a more …

The concept of succession planning is not new for organizations, as most will experience the loss of key personnel for a variety of reasons including retirement, termination, death, and unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, having a deliberate and systematic process for identifying, developing, and retaining key personnel makes succession planning critical to the long term viability of organizations.
However, challenges in the global marketplace, …

The Link Between Job Satisfaction And The Intention To Leave Among Casino Employees, Oliver Wayne Aho
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Job turnover has long plagued the hospitality and tourism industry. The casino segment of this industry is particularly vulnerable to excessive staff turnover due to the face-toface interaction between gamblers and gaming company employees. The relationship between job satisfaction and job turnover has been explored in numerous industries. This research study used correlational research, linear regression, and descriptive statistics to examine the intrinsic, extrinsic, and general factors of job satisfaction and its influence on the intent to leave for all employees and the employees of the security, housekeeping, and beverage departments of a major casino operation. Additionally, the variables of …

Herding And Anchoring In Macroeconomic Forecasts: The Case Of The Pmi, John B. Broughton, Bento J. Lobo
Herding And Anchoring In Macroeconomic Forecasts: The Case Of The Pmi, John B. Broughton, Bento J. Lobo
Business Faculty Articles and Research
We test if analysts display multiple biases in forecasting the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI). We adopt a test that does not require knowledge of the forecaster’s prior information set and is robust to rational clustering, correlated forecast errors and outliers. We find that analysts forecast the PMI poorly and display multiple biases when forecasting. In particular, forecasters anti-herd and anti-anchor. Anti-herding supports a reputation-based notion that forecasters are rewarded not only for forecast accuracy but also for being the best forecast at a single point in time. Anti-anchoring is consistent with forecasters overreacting to …

“I Need That Week Off!”: An Experiential Exercise On Conflict And Negotiation, Melanie A. Robinson
Organization Management Journal
This article presents an experiential exercise designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their knowledge of ways in which conflict may be managed (using the framework proposed by Thomas, 1976) and types of negotiation. Students form pairs and are presented with a scenario in which they have both requested the same week of vacation to attend events. Unfortunately, they are informed that they are unable to take the time off simultaneously. Participants are asked to discuss among themselves, using assigned modes of managing conflict, to determine how the time will be allocated. The target audience is composed of …

Managing Careers For Ambidexterity And Organizational Alignment: Why It Matters Today To Hr Practice, Nicole C. Jackson, Isabelle Lescent-Giles, Linda M. Dunn-Jensen
Organization Management Journal
Today’s competitive environment increasingly calls for organizations and their employees to align competencies and individual capabilities for ambidexterity. Ambidexterity is defined as the need to exploit competencies while allowing for innovative potential. The role of human capital development, and specifically understanding how existing human resources (HR) practices may limit ambidexterity, is central to career management. While career management spans both individual and organizational interests, we approach this issue from the question of how firms can manage careers to build organizational ambidexterity. We also explore what HR professionals can do to address this issue. As part of our approach, we focus …

Leveraging Positive Psychological Capital (Psycap) In Crisis: A Multiphase Framework, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Djordje Milosevic
Organization Management Journal
Despite recent advancements in understanding of leadership in context, there is surprisingly little insight into leadership in crisis. To provide insight into how leaders navigate crisis, we utilize historical sources of Sir Winston Churchill’s leadership during World War II to analyze which resources are used by leaders during a crisis and how they leverage these resources to lead through and out of the crisis. We discover that psychological capital (PsyCap) is a core individual resource that leaders leverage in crisis. Our findings suggest that leaders leverage PsyCap in varying ways based on the phase of the crisis. That is, different …

Towards Establishing Design Principles For Balancing Usability And Maintaining Cognitive Abilities, Gayathri Balasubramanian, Hyowon Lee, King Wang Poon, Wee-Kiat Lim, Wai Keet Yong
CCX Research
While technology has improved the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of work, its prolonged use also weakens users’ cognitive abilities over time. By creating usable, efficient, emotive, and engaging experiences, HCI researchers and practitioners have inadvertently led users to offload their innate capabilities onto their devices. How should technology be (re)designed so as to reduce the negative effects of on users’ cognitive abilities when used over time? In this paper, we discuss a set of design principles intended to help designers consider how long-term use of their artefacts could maintain and even improve users’ unassisted abilities and reduce negative impacts of …

Why do part-time employees with reduced workload and remuneration work longer hours than contracted? Existing research attributes this phenomenon to organisational culture. design of the part-time work. relationship with others at work and one's personality traits. However, there are at least two major gaps in the existing research. Firstly. there is no integrated framework which links these factors influencing part-time employees to work longer hours. This impacts the ability for individuals and companies to systematically apply these findings to improve part-time arrangements; Secondly. most studies to date use self-report methods such:15 interviews and surveys. which limit the findings to what …
Diversity Team Building: Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Nina C. Magpili-Smith
Diversity Team Building: Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Nina C. Magpili-Smith
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Although organizations have addressed diversity issues at the organizational-level with resulting positive employee outcomes, lack of scholarly attention to team-level interventions remain. Team-level interventions would benefit organizations more directly as they address issues directly related to task accomplishment. Since diversity may lead to negative performance results for teams, a team building intervention based on the latest empirical research was developed and tested to address the potential performance losses associated to diversity in decision-making teams. The team building intervention provides six crucial elements, namely (1) direct experience of how deep-level team diversity affect team dynamics, (2) diversity education, (3) cultivation of …
Threat Or Challenge? Intensified Job Demands And The Moderating Effect Of Differentiated Transformational Leadership, Benjamin Bass
Threat Or Challenge? Intensified Job Demands And The Moderating Effect Of Differentiated Transformational Leadership, Benjamin Bass
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Over the past 30 years, industrialized democracies have experienced major economic change due to globalization, economic instability, and rapid technological innovation. To remain viable, organizations maximize flexibility through strategies like downsizing, just-in-time inventory, and temporary labor. Consequently, employees face heightened responsibility, variable workloads, and rising job insecurity. While these demands are stressful, at times, some may represent an exciting challenge. Recently, researchers started studying how the long-term intensification of work affects employees via intensified job demands. This dissertation builds on their efforts by exploring short-term job demand intensification. Specifically, the transactional model of stress and the job demands-resources model were …

Peer Effects Of Corporate Social Responsibility, Hao Liang, Hao Liang, Xintong Zhan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We investigate how firms react to their peers' adoption of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by using a regression discontinuity design that relies on "locally" exogenous variations of CSR generated by shareholder proposals that pass or fail by a small margin of votes. Specifically, we find that peers of a voting firm who passed a close-call CSR proposal experience lower announcement returns and higher following-year CSR scores compared to those of a voting firm that marginally failed a CSR proposal. Such effects are stronger in peer firms with higher competitive pressure, better CSR performance relative to the voting firm, and a …

Toward A Theoretical Framework To Studying Climate Change Policies: Insights From Case Study Of Singapore, Ai Sian Ng, May O. Lwin, Augustine Pang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The world decided in December 2015 to take actions to reduce global warming. To contribute toward this goal, this research examines possible policy levers for inclusion in the climate change ratification plan. A case study of the measures taken by the Republic of Singapore, a low-lying 719.2 km2 island without natural resources in Asia, is conducted. Being vulnerable to climate change impact and yet having to balance her people’s needs and economic progress with limited resources, the measures taken by this small country could offer policy insights for small states and states without access to alternative energy sources. This research …

Explicating The Information Vacuum: Stages, Intensifications, And Implications, Eugene Woon, Augustine Pang
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Purpose: Information vacuums (IVs) arise from organizational failure to satisfy the stakeholders’ informational demands during crises. The purpose of this paper is to expand Pang’s (2013) study of the phenomenon of IV by investigating its nature, stages, intensifying factors and resolution. Design/methodology/approach: Print and social media data of five recent international crises with apparent IVs were analyzed. Findings: Poor crisis communications are intensifying factors that induce media hijacks and hypes, distancing, and public confusion. A four-stage model maps the phenomenon into a flow chart describing its development. IV termination begins when organizations either respond with information or provide solutions, results, …
Fast-And-Frugal Trees As Noncompensatory Models Of Performance-Based Personnel Decisions, Shenghua Luan, Jochen Reb
Fast-And-Frugal Trees As Noncompensatory Models Of Performance-Based Personnel Decisions, Shenghua Luan, Jochen Reb
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Employees’ performance provides the basis for many personnel decisions, and to make these decisions, managers often need to integrate information from different performance-related cues. We asked college students and experienced managers to make a series of performance-based personnel decisions and tested how well weighting-and-adding, compensatory logistic regression and lexicographic, noncompensatory fast-and-frugal trees (FFTs) could describe participants’ decision processes regarding both choices and reaction times. Results show that a significant proportion of the participants (i.e., nearly half of the college students and more than two-thirds of the experienced managers) applied FFTs to make such decisions, and that the majority of them adopted key …

Breach: Understanding The Mandatory Reporting Of Title Ix Violations As Pedagogy And Performance, Jacob G. Abraham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how institutions generate, teach, and authorize normative performances through texts and/as pedagogical practices. Through an analysis of the University of South Florida’s mandatory reporting policy, training, and Title IX Incident Report Form, this project examines how institutions construct and privilege certain values, performances, and individuals as means of generating the legal compliance of the institution independent. These practices are valued independent of how such compliance enables and limits the relationship between students and teachers. I argue the University’s texts and pedagogical practices serve to substantiate, authorize, and perform the materialization of certain privileges and the normative standards …

Cyber Counterproductive Work Behaviors: Measurement, Prediction, And Means For Reduction, Brittany K. Mercado
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Although counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) have received intense attention by both researchers and practitioners over the past few decades, this body of literature has yet to address the many novel avenues for employee counterproductivity resulting from modern technologies. For example, with the current ubiquity of electronic devices and Internet access, employees can conveniently engage in personal tasks while they should be working or even damage organizational data with unprecedented ease. Beyond reputational concerns and productivity losses, firms’ reliance on electronic storage of critical information also produces novel security risks. Measures of CWB and, therefore, investigations into the construct do not …
