Support For Increasing Low-Wage Workers’ Compensation: The Role Of Fixed-Growth Mindsets About Intelligence, Shilpa Madan, Anyi Ma, Neeraj Pandey, Aneeta Rattan, Krishna Savani
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Approximately 44% of U.S. workers are low-wage workers. Recent years have witnessed a raging debate about whether to raise their minimum wages. Why do some decision-makers support raising wages and others do not? Ten studies (four preregistered) examined people’s beliefs about the malleability of intelligence as a key antecedent. The more U.S. human resource managers (Study 1) and Indian business owners (Study 2) believed that people’s intelligence can grow (i.e., had a growth mindset), the more they supported increasing low-wage workers’ compensation. In key U.S. swing states (Study 3a), and a nationally representative sample (Study 3b), residents with a more …

Understanding the consequences of homophily, which is among the most widely observed social phenomena, is important, with implications for management theory and practice. Therefore, we review management research on the consequences of homophily. As the consequences of homophily have been studied at the individual, dyad, team, organizational, and macro levels, we structure our review accordingly. We highlight findings that are consistent and contradictory, as well as those that point to boundary conditions or moderators. In conducting our review, we also derive implications for management research from insights gained by research in other disciplines on this topic. We raise specific issues …

Approaches To Preventing Applicants From Faking Personality Assessments: Construct Contamination Under Faking Conditions, Peter A. Fisher
Approaches To Preventing Applicants From Faking Personality Assessments: Construct Contamination Under Faking Conditions, Peter A. Fisher
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Personality testing is a popular and useful predictor of future job performance in personnel selection. Personality assessment faking behaviour, however, threatens the usefulness of personality in personnel selection by reducing the validity of assessment results and creating distrust in the assessment results. Recent research exploring a new, computer-mediated assessment response format, the Rapid Response Measure (RRM; Meade et al., 2020), has the potential to dramatically change the way personality assessment is conducted in high-stakes, personnel selection. An initial investigation of the RRM suggests that it may significantly reduce personality assessment faking behaviours. The means by which the RRM is proposed …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This phenomenological study used Social Identity Theory (SIT) to explore the lived experiences of female veterans throughout their military transition phases to their postmilitary experiences, including successfully obtaining civilian employment. The purpose was to increase understanding of the unique experiences and needs of females during this transition and learn the success factors leading to gaining employment. This can help deter the increasing unemployment, depression, stress, and anxiety rates for female veterans. The social identities while in the military and postmilitary were studied to understand the catalysts to female transition issues. Increasing Nurse Leader Knowledge And Awareness Of Information And Communication Technologies, Cory Stephens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Due to the recent coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, rapid technological innovation and nursing practice transformation exposed a deepening divide in the knowledge and awareness of information and communication technologies (ICT) among nurses. This technological skills gap undermines the benefits of ICT to nursing practice such as increased nurse satisfaction, improved care quality, and reduced costs. Nurse leaders are positioned to promote the use of ICT among nurses but may suffer from the same knowledge deficit of ICT as their followers. Guided by Locsin’s technological competencies as caring in nursing theory, Staggers and Parks’ nurse-computer interaction framework, and Covell’s nursing intellectual …

This quantitative study explores the impact of overconfidence bias, lying for strategic advantage, and co-operation (or non-cooperation) among 29 highly experienced private equity fund and investment managers. Using four structured experiments, M&A professionals were assigned buyer and seller roles and allowed to choose among investment opportunities. Microfoundations Of Dynamic Managerial Capabilities: A Personality Perspective, Alan Jiun Haw Tea
Microfoundations Of Dynamic Managerial Capabilities: A Personality Perspective, Alan Jiun Haw Tea
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Research in dynamic capabilities (Teece 2007) looks at how organizations derive and potentially sustain competitive advantage by dynamically making sense of opportunities, marshalling and manipulating assets and resources in response to these opportunities (Eisenhardt & Martin, 2000; Teece, 2007). The study of dynamic managerial capabilities is concerned with the microfoundations – attendant attributes as it were – that underpin managers’ ability to effectively participate in the dynamic capabilities of sensing, seizing and reconfiguring (Helfat & Martin, 2015b; Helfat & Peteraf, 2015). Apart from the predominant cognitive account of microfoundations, there remains an under-theorized and underresearched gap in the field of …

Next, we review different streams of management research on curiosity at work (i.e., broad generative and nongenerative effects, curiosity as a catalyst for personal action, curiosity as a catalyst for interpersonal action, curiosity as a catalyst for leadership, curiosity as an …

A Bubble Of Protection: Examining Dispositional Optimism As A Psychological Buffer Of The Deleterious Association Between Negative Work-Family Spillover And Psychological Health, Sean T. H. Lee, Bryan K. C. Choy, Jose C. Yong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Demands and stressors from work increasingly encroach upon people’s family lives in modern settings, resulting in poorer familial relationships and impaired psychological health. The current study proposed and examined dispositional optimism as a potential psychological buffer of the deleterious impact of negative work-to-family spillover (WFS) on psychological health. Based on a sample of employed midlife adults in the United States (N = 1,252) drawn from a large and nationally representative dataset, MIDUS 3, we found that dispositional optimism significantly moderated the relationship between negative WFS and subjective well-being, even after controlling for a variety of potential confounds. However, this moderation …
Do People Want To Be Designated As A High Potential? The Relationship Between Designation, Managerial Aspirations, Leader Development Efficacy, And Task Persistence., Alexandria Brown
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
High-potential programs are becoming increasingly popular in organizations, and the academic literature lacks research to inform the structure of these programs. Participants in these programs are often selected from the broader organization and then are put through a series of developmental activities (such as mentoring and stretch assignments). These programs are time-consuming for both the employee and the organization. Therefore, the organization must be selecting individuals that genuinely want to be a participant. It is also essential to understand the individual differences that make an individual more likely to succeed in a high-potential program. These individual differences include managerial aspirations …

This research study was an investigation of the relationship between the five dimensions of personality, organizational climate, and presenteeism - coming to work when ill. Presenteeism has significant, negative impact on employee’s long-term health, the overall organizational performance, and more broadly on national health systems. Researchers have found that in addition to financial impacts of not working while ill, antecedents of presenteeism include both personal, situational (e.g., the severity of the illness), and organizational circumstances. A systematic exploration into all five dimensions of personality and organizational climate has not been conducted to date. The purpose of this quantitative study was …

A phenomenological study was conducted to obtain the experiences and perceptions of 13 seasoned academic advisors using semistructured interviews. The interview questions focus on the phenomenon of hiring, onboarding, and assigning advisors; therefore, …
