Towards Critical Medical Practice: Nursing Practice And An Emr System, Dirk Postma
Towards Critical Medical Practice: Nursing Practice And An Emr System, Dirk Postma
Dirk Postma
A focus on critique as a form of theory within critical management studies (CMS) and critical information systems research (CISR) leads to concerns about the impact of critique on the transformation of practice and about the active role of practitioners. The emphasis on theory also prevents insight into the heterogeneous nature of critical practices. This paper develops a posthumanist approach to critique. A case is analysed where an electronic medical record (EMR) information system is introduced in a hospital. The focus is on tracing the effect of this system on the work of nurses. It is shown how the system …
Building Trust In Online Customers, George M. Coles, William J. Smart
Building Trust In Online Customers, George M. Coles, William J. Smart
George M Coles
Although significant progress has been made towards securing the Internet environment, many consumers remain reluctant to participate in making on-line purchases. Cyber- crime continues to have a negative influence upon the uptake and acceptance of E-Commerce by consumers. As a result commercial website operators are faced with the problem of overcoming user distrust in their systems. The main argument put forward in this study is that a consumer’s trust depends more upon traditional marketing strategies than it does upon their beliefs in the security of on-line systems. In many cases these issues have been overlooked by web developers and vendors …
Effects Of Perceiver / Target Gender And Social Networking Presence On Web-Based Impression Formation, T. R. Hill, Leslie J. Albert, S. Venkatsubramanyan
Effects Of Perceiver / Target Gender And Social Networking Presence On Web-Based Impression Formation, T. R. Hill, Leslie J. Albert, S. Venkatsubramanyan
Leslie J. Albert
As the Web has expanded in its use and utility it has fundamentally changed the way in which individuals gather and use information. This paper suggests that those changes give rise to tangible and significant effects in the impressions people form of others using Web-based information. This study explores the impacts of perceiver gender, target gender, and social networking presence on subjects’ perceptions of potential teammates otherwise unknown to them as revealed by ratings they assign based only on search engine results. Experiments reveal differences in how male and female perceivers view others’ social networking activity in general and suggest …
Extrapolating The Price To Performance Frontier For Computer System Components: Processing, Storage, Memory, And Network Interface, G. Kent Webb
G. Kent Webb
As new computer hardware becomes available offering better performance at a lower price, computer accessibility rapidly improves resulting in dramatic changes to society. Planners in business and other organizations need an estimate of future prices and performance to help design their systems or to anticipate the effect of these changes. This paper presents a new set of historical annual data from 1987 to 2010 defining basic price to performance measurements for computer components including processors, hard drives, random access memory, and network interface cards. Two approaches to extrapolating price to performance are evaluated, the industry learning curve and a constant …
Designing And Building A Knowledge Warehouse Oriented, Public Decision Support Site Using Free Google Tools: An Analysis And Case Application To Deer Management, G. Kent Webb
G. Kent Webb
As a case example for the design and implementation of a public decision support site, a variety of free Google tools are applied to supporting deer management decisions. A large number of communities throughout the country are engaged in what is often described as one of the most contentious decisions facing local governments. These decision makers routinely look to the internet for decision support, but information can be contradictory and difficult to find. To determine issues and requirements, data was collected using Google Search, Google keyword data, and a Google Alert was set up to retrieve news and information on …
Leveraging Social Network Analysis To Improve The Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practices And Systems In Healthcare, Priscilla Arling
Leveraging Social Network Analysis To Improve The Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practices And Systems In Healthcare, Priscilla Arling
Priscilla Arling
In healthcare, evidence-based practice (EBP) integrates clinical expertise with the best available external evidence from systematic research. Yet even with the aid of technology, implementation of EBP in many settings remains a challenge. This paper combines research from the fields of healthcare implementation science and social networks to present an integrated framework for the study of EBP-related information systems. We explore the application of the framework to a complex healthcare collaborative, the MRSA infection control project, a project intended to foster the implementation of EBP's to reduce the spread of MRSA infections. We also consider how the framework can be …
Facilitating New Knowledge Creation And Obtaining Km Maturity, Priscilla Arling, Mark Chun
Facilitating New Knowledge Creation And Obtaining Km Maturity, Priscilla Arling, Mark Chun
Priscilla Arling
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe a framework designed to assess the capacity of a knowledge management (KM) system to facilitate new knowledge creation.
Design/methodology/approach – A longitudinal case study methodology, in a single company, Pratt Whitney Rocketdyne (PWR), was used to test the framework.
Findings – New knowledge creation is best supported through mature KM systems that include all four modes of knowledge creation: combination, externalization, socialization, and internalization. KM systems and environments as a whole reach maturity by progressing through stages, which is presented as a KM maturity model.
Research limitations/implications – By combining …

Achieving Supply Chain Integration Using Rfid Technology: The Case Of Emerging Intelligent B-To-B E-Commerce Processes In A Living Laboratory, S. Fosso Wamba
Achieving Supply Chain Integration Using Rfid Technology: The Case Of Emerging Intelligent B-To-B E-Commerce Processes In A Living Laboratory, S. Fosso Wamba
Dr Samuel Fosso Wamba
Purpose: Despite the high operational and strategic potentials of RFID technology, very little studies have been conducted about its role as enabler of supply chain integration to achieve high-level operational efficiency. Therefore, this study is an initial effort towards bridging the existing knowledge gap in the literature. Design/methodology: This exploratory research was conducted in one retail supply chain. A multi-method approach combining a longitudinal real-life case study and a methodology integrating several steps, including a “Living Laboratory” strategy was used and involved all members of a product line to analyze in terms of their contributing activities and their interface with …
A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake
A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake
Roger H. Blake
This paper presents the results of an experimental study to measure professionalism for the purpose of assessing a professional development program. Soft skills such as professionalism are increasingly recognized as important, yet measuring and assessing these skills, typically best acquired experientially, has remained challenging. Following established research, we conceptualize professionalism as a construct with the dimensions of autonomy, commitment, belief in public service, self-regulation, and the use of a professional organization as a major referent. We demonstrate how these dimensions can be expressed and the professionalism of free-form text responses measured. These responses are reflections submitted online by participants in …
Cognitive Processes In Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering Practice: Analogical Reasoning And Mental Modelling, Linda Dawson
Cognitive Processes In Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering Practice: Analogical Reasoning And Mental Modelling, Linda Dawson
Associate Professor Linda Dawson
This paper presents a background in cognitive processes such as problem solving and analogical reasoning for considering modeling from an object-oriented perspective within the domain of requirements engineering. The paper then describes a research project and the findings from a set of four cases which examine professional practice from perspective of cognitive modeling for object-oriented requirements engineering. In these studies, it was found that the analysts routinely built models in their minds and refined them before committing them to paper or communicating these models to others. The studies also showed that objectoriented analysts depend on analogical reasoning where they use …
