Career Anchors Of United States Air Force Information Systems Workers: A Turnover Predictor, Lee A. Wynne
Career Anchors Of United States Air Force Information Systems Workers: A Turnover Predictor, Lee A. Wynne
Theses and Dissertations
E-Learning Technology is being used to train and educate a myriad of personnel. Evidence shows, however, that completion rates among e-learners are lower than that of traditional learners. Motivational theory is applied to this problem to explain why e-learners initiate, sustain and terminate behavior. In particular, an integrative motivational model, that highlights distal and proximal processes, is introduced to identify and measure those factors most likely to influence e-learning completion rates. Findings offer recommendations that may be useful to e-learning instructors, administrators, and designers. Three research questions were used to investigate motivational theory and its relation to e-learning completion rates. …

Developing An Upward Feedback Instrument For Supervisor Development, Douglas C. Patton
Theses and Dissertations
With the United States military representing an ever-shrinking share of the electronics market, Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Materiel Shortages (DMSMS) represents both a threat to mission capability as well as a large expenditure to maintain aging military weapon systems. As the primary manager of Federal Stock Classes 5961 and 5962, the Defense Supply Center, Columbus (DSCC) confronts the largest number of DMSMS cases. Their resolution of DMSMS cases affects nearly every fielded weapon system. This thesis sought to determine if the management strategy used by the DSCC could be improved. Based on the evaluation of the process, the researcher's recommendations …

A Generalized Decision Support System For The Contracting Career Field, Larry D. Mercier Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This research effort develops a generalized decision support system (DSS) to assist contracting career field managers in making recruiting and retention decisions. The DSS focuses on the skill level inventories of the contracting enlisted force. The interest in this research was identified by contracting career field managers due to the recent negative trends in recruitment and retention and the lack of analytical tools available. To accomplish this objective manpower models were developed using a combination of techniques gathered through interviews with Army and Air Force analysts and a literature review focusing on manpower modeling. The models developed in this study …

Predictability And Family Support: Effects On Air Force Organizational Outcomes, John R. Underhill
Theses and Dissertations
This research examined the effects of deployment predictability and family support on Air Force personnel's intent to leave the Air Force using measures of work interference with family, family interference with work, job and life satisfaction, and affective organizational commitment. Based upon current theory found in the literature, a model was developed linking these variables. A web-based survey was sent out via email and obtained 1,234 responses (25.5%) from Air Force personnel regarding their perceptions of aforementioned variables. Using Structural Equation Modeling, support was found via several indirect paths that predictability has a negative effect on airmen's intent to quit. …

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles
The usefulness of any research is dependent upon how well the group studied represents the group about which decisions are to be made or conclusions drawn. That is, it depends upon how well the sample reflects relevant characteristics of the population. When it is possible to study every member of that group there is no problem, for on these occasions we can easily calculate the exact attribute (parameter) of interest for our population.
For example, if we were interested in determining the average number of gallons of gasoline sold to customers at our service station yesterday, we …

There Is Nothing More Diverse Than "New", Frederick A. Miller, Roger Gans
There Is Nothing More Diverse Than "New", Frederick A. Miller, Roger Gans
Communication Faculty Publications - Archive
In the organizational competition for talent, successful retention of newly recruited workers is at least as important as the initial hire. Still, many organizations fail to establish a sense of inclusion for new people in much the same way they often fail to create a sense of inclusion for people of color, women, people with foreign accents, or anyone with obvious differences from the “traditional group.” In most organizations, even those that have embarked on “diversity initiatives,” newly hired people often do not feel welcomed. Consequently, turnover rates in the first two years of employment are seven times greater than …

The Influence Of The Use Of Recommended Management Practices On Milk Production In Southeast Louisiana, Ronald David Bardwell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The dairy industry in Southeast Louisiana is one of the largest agricultural industries, with a gross farm value of over 74 million dollars. Much of the economy of Southeast Louisiana parishes depends on the dairy industry. Therefore, improvements in production efficiency and/or effectiveness would have an enormous impact on the parish economy. This study identifies the use of recommended practices by dairy producers, thus allowing educational programs to be focused on specific areas of greatest need. The purpose of the study was to describe the management practices of Southeast Louisiana dairy producers and to determine if a relationship existed between …
The Existence Of Gender-Specific Promotion Standards In The U.S., Kathy Paulson Gjerde
The Existence Of Gender-Specific Promotion Standards In The U.S., Kathy Paulson Gjerde
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
This paper is motivated by the claim that promotion probabilities are lower for women than men. Using data from the 1984 and 1989 National Longitudinal Youth Surveys, this paper tests this claim and two related hypotheses concerning training and ability. It is found that females are less likely to be promoted than males, and females receive less training than males. The relationship between promotion and gender varies across occupations, however, suggesting that the alleged glass ceiling faced by women and other minorities in the workplace is not uniform across all labor markets.
Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien
Employer Perceptions Of Work Flexibility: Role Of Skills And Wages In Job Performance, Raymond L. Raab, Pradeep Kotamraju, Maureen O'Brien
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A programming approach, data envelopment analysis (DEA), will sort and rank occupations on the basis of maximizing skills required and minimizing that occupation's wage resulting in a set of "hiring" efficiency scores. This procedure improves Borda rankings (rankings based on the average of rankings of the individual components), fixed weight, or subjective weighting schemes. In DEA, the linear programming weights or coefficients are explicitly chosen to maximize the discrimination between the skills and wages. A rank correlation between the efficiency scores and various work and demographic variables is performed. The results show a negative correlation between the wage rate and …

Many organizations are committing to education and training that deepens skills, perspectives, and competencies of their leaders. This research located 103 studies from 1982-2001 with a full range of managerial leadership development interventions including feedback, developmental relationships, on-the-job experiences, and formal training. It integrated results of 83 of these studies with formal training interventions via meta-analytic techniques to determine the effectiveness of interventions, in their enhancement of performance, knowledge, and expertise at the individual, team or group, or organizational level. The studies were viewed through a "macro-lens," that used a full range of managerial leadership development interventions (McCauley, Moxley, & …

Persistence And Visibility Of Group Faultlines: A Theoretical Model Of The Effect Of Group Culture And Team Identity On The Group Faultlines-Organizational Conflict Link, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn, Madhan Gounder
Psychology
We expand the group faultline theory by taking into account the relative importance of various demographics within the group that can trigger the formation of strong group faultlines. We draw on group faultline theory (Lau & Murnighan, 1998), social identity and categorization theories (Turner & Tajfel, 1986), social dominance theory (Sidanius & Pratto, 1999), and evolutionary psychology (Kurzban & Leary, 2001) to predict how group faultlines affect conflict. We propose that the visible demographic characteristics (age, race, and gender) will be more influential than the non-visible (education, tenure, and function) in determining the interaction patterns within the group (Thatcher & …

An Examination Of The Accuracy Of Slogans Related To Assessment Centres, Filip Lievens
An Examination Of The Accuracy Of Slogans Related To Assessment Centres, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
To diffuse new management fads or to promote existing management practices slogans are often used. In this study eight slogans regarding assessment centres were retrieved from brochures of consultancy agencies and were compared to empirical research. These slogans were that assessment centres work, are expensive, fair, have a potent influence on candidates, protide insight into candidates' personality, and are not prone to trainability effects. Other slogans include that trained assessors speak the same language and that candidate reactions are positive. Resulting from this comparison a more fine-grained picture of the strengths and weaknesses of assessment centres emerges. In particular, it …
