Awakening The Entrepreneurial Spirit: Exploring The Relationship Between Organizational Factors And Perceptions Of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy And Desirability In A Corporate Setting, Deborah V. Brazeal, Mark T. Schenkel, Jay A. Azriel Jan 2008

Azriel

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

While efforts at understanding how the entrepreneurial spirit is awakened (e.g., unwrapping the cognitive “black box”) have been productive in the new venture context, it remains largely unexplored in a corporate setting. This study extends previous research by investigating the relationship between organizational antecedents and perceptions of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and desirability of entrepreneurial activity. In a field study of organizations consistent with a corporate entrepreneurial archetype typology, we found that (1) individual work discretion and time availability impacted entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and (2) individual interest in work innovation influenced perceived desirability of innovative behaviors.

Challenge Course Effectiveness: The Impact On Leadership Efficacy And Work Efficacy Among College Students, Theresa Odello, Eddie Hill, Edwin Gomez

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Challenge courses have become increasingly popular in recent years. Many groups are turning to half-day challenge courses due to time and financial constraints. Yet, few studies have quantified the benefits of a half-day course. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of participation in a four-hour challenge course on leadership efficacy and work efficacy of college students. Pretest, posttest, and follow-up questionnaires were utilized. T-test analyses found that participating in a challenge course has a significant positive effect on increasing one’s leadership and work efficacy from pretest to posttest, after participation in a four-hour challenge course. This …

The study was a phenomenological qualitative research design, with researcher-developed guiding questions to help direct interviews. The sample was purposeful and was drawn from the patient base of a local endocrinologist. The couples who participated were greater than 18 years of age and had discontinued treatment one year prior to implementation of the study. Two married couples participated in the study while only the women of the other three couples agreed to be …

Toward An Effective And Humane Counterinsurgency, Adam Patrick Shilling Jan 2008

Toward An Effective And Humane Counterinsurgency, Adam Patrick Shilling

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Preliminary research isolated a set of thirteen candidate principles that military officers need to understand to conduct effective and humane counterinsurgency. A meta-synthesis of eight classical theorists of counterinsurgency sought support for and consensus on these principles and discovered considerable consensus on all of them. Therefore, this set could be considered a “classical” model of counterinsurgency for use in counterinsurgency campaign planning. The contemporary global political environment is very different from that the classical theorists faced. Therefore, additional research attempted to understand the changes in the environment and in the nature of insurgency to determine the changes necessary to update …

Ethical And Managerial Implications Of Internet Monitoring, Andra Gumbus, Frances Grodzinsky Jan 2008

Ethical And Managerial Implications Of Internet Monitoring, Andra Gumbus, Frances Grodzinsky

WCBT Faculty Publications

As Internet use pervades our personal and professional lives, organizations have become increasingly concerned about employee use of the Internet for personal reasons while at work. This has prompted the restriction of the Internet or the limitation of the Internet during work hours. Monitoring of employee Internet and email is another result of this trend. Legitimate business functions such as employee performance appraisal and progress toward goals are served by monitoring. However, poorly designed and communicated monitoring practices can be negative and have perverse effects on employee morale and productivity. Monitoring of employees erodes trust and may be considered an …

Management Challenges Of A Culturally Diverse Workforce In The Irish Hotel Sector: An Investigative Study Of Four And Five Star Hotels In Cork, Amy Jordan Jan 2008

Management Challenges Of A Culturally Diverse Workforce In The Irish Hotel Sector: An Investigative Study Of Four And Five Star Hotels In Cork, Amy Jordan

Theses

In recent years Ireland has changed from a nation of emigration to one of immigration, facilitated by the Irish Celtic Tiger, the globalisation of labour markets and the erosion of labour restrictions across frontiers. Thus there is increased employee diversity in the Irish work environment, with many different races, cultures, norms, values and religions now in evidence in the Irish workforce. These changes have a significant effect on managers as the Irish workplace becomes increasingly culturally heterogeneous, and forms the basis for change in management practice.

Primary research was undertaken in the form of six interviews with hotel managers to …

Human Resource Administration In The Academic Library, Dennis R. Defa Jan 2008

Human Resource Administration In The Academic Library, Dennis R. Defa

Library Scholarship

Libraries at colleges and universities provide a challenging environment for the practice of human resource (HR) administration. The dynamics and structure of the academic library within the higher education community create complex environments for the library administrator attempting to navigate the myriad rules and regulations (state, federal, and institutional) that affect staff recruiting, hiring, processing, compensating, and related functions for library personnel. Depending upon the complexities of the HR function in any academic library, the organization may be best served by designating an HR expert as a member of the library’s administrative team. This article will review the HR function …

Is Identical Really Identical? An Investigation Of Equivalency Theory And Online Learning, Ruth Lapsley, Brian Kulik, Rex Moody, J. B. (Ben) Arbaugh Jan 2008

Is Identical Really Identical? An Investigation Of Equivalency Theory And Online Learning, Ruth Lapsley, Brian Kulik, Rex Moody, J. B. (Ben) Arbaugh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This study investigates the validity of equivalency theory among 63 students by comparing two introductory upper-division human resource management courses: one taught online, the other in a traditional classroom. Commonalities included same term, same professor, and identical assignments/tests in the same order, thus allowing a direct comparison of course outcomes. MANCOVA results supported equivalency theory, and further suggest that the online learning pedagogy may be superior in its overall effect on student performance.

Role Of The Sales Manager And Its Intersection With Sales Technology, Stephen Kennelly Jan 2008

Role Of The Sales Manager And Its Intersection With Sales Technology, Stephen Kennelly

Masters

The area of sales management and technology is an expanding and dynamic field of research. Examining the impact and facets of technology in the arena of sales management has been steadily increasing over the past few decades as sales managers and industry seek to benefit from the multiple uses of technology. Large scale quantitative sales research itself in Ireland has been limited over the past 15 years and not since De Burca and Lambkin (1991) performed an analysis of the industry has there been any wide scale research in Ireland. This body of work seeks to follow on from De …

Measuring Agility Of Organizations - A Comprehensive Agility Measurement Tool (Camt), Ameya S. Erande, Alok K. Verma Jan 2008

Measuring Agility Of Organizations - A Comprehensive Agility Measurement Tool (Camt), Ameya S. Erande, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Since "Agility" is ability to respond to unpredictable changes with quick response and profitability, it is not industry specific. This "not industry specific" nature of agility makes it hard to assess and measure it on a fixed scale. Measurement of agility of an enterprise has been a major topic of research since inception of agility in 1991. Though some methods have been developed to measure agility, they mainly remain tied to manufacturing industry. As agility is present in all the industries, comprehensive tool to measure it is a necessity in order to determine responsiveness of an enterprise to external turbulences. …

Employee Performance Assessment In Quality Assurance, Rahul Jain Jan 2008

Employee Performance Assessment In Quality Assurance, Rahul Jain

Master's Projects

Employee performance often determines the progress of a company. Poor appraisals and improper assessment directly effects employee satisfaction and impair company results. Many managers rely primarily on behavioral impressions without appropriately including factual information of the actual work done. There is clear benefit from procedures that elicit and use both factual and subjective criteria for assessment. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a methodology that can be applied to complex decisions with multiple criteria [29]. AHP has the capability to combine both subjective and objective evaluation factors, thereby minimizing bias in decision making [29]. The methodology also allows subjective measures from …

Interviewers' Sensitivity To Impression Management Tactics In Structured Interviews, Filip Lievens, Helga Peeters

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines interviewers' sensitivity to impression management in structured interviews by determining the relative importance that interviewers attach to ( verbal and nonverbal) impression management as compared to the relative importance that they attach to predetermined competencies. Two samples of interviewers ( 55 Master I/O psychology students and 18 professional interviewers) watched and evaluated videotaped interviewees who were instructed to put their best foot forward. Results of relative weight analyses showed that the importance of verbal and nonverbal impression management tactics was relatively small as compared to the importance attached to job-related competencies. The type of interview format had …

A Closer Look At The Relationship Between Justice Perceptions And Feedback Reactions: The Role Of The Quality Of The Relationship With The Supervisor, Marjolein Feys, Nele Libbrecht, Frederik Anseel, Filip Lievens Jan 2008

A Closer Look At The Relationship Between Justice Perceptions And Feedback Reactions: The Role Of The Quality Of The Relationship With The Supervisor, Marjolein Feys, Nele Libbrecht, Frederik Anseel, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Two field studies were undertaken to investigate the nature of the relationship between justice perceptions and feedback reactions. Previous work Suggests that the relationship between procedural justice and feedback reactions is mediated by the quality of the relationship with the supervisor. However, there are also good theoretical reasons to hypothesise that the relationship between justice perceptions and feedback reactions is moderated by relationship quality. Across two field studies, we found Support for both mediated and moderated relationships. Results of the moderator analyses showed that the positive relationship between justice perceptions and feedback reactions was more pronounced for subordinates in a …

Rethinking The Role Of Management Consultants As Disseminators Of Business Knowledge: Knowledge Flows, Directions, And Conditions In Consulting Projects, Andrew Sturdy, Karen Handley, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham Jan 2008

Rethinking The Role Of Management Consultants As Disseminators Of Business Knowledge: Knowledge Flows, Directions, And Conditions In Consulting Projects, Andrew Sturdy, Karen Handley, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Consultants are seen as core agents in the dissemination of business knowledgethrough their relative expertise and/or rhetorical and knowledge management practices. However, relatively few studies focus specifically on their role in projects with clientorganisations. This paper examines knowledge flow in consultancy projects fromlongitudinal observation and interview research as well as a survey of clients andconsultants working together. Our analysis suggests that the conventional view ofconsultants as disseminators of new management ideas to clients is, at best, exaggerated and certainly misrepresents their role in project work. Firstly, it tends tooccur by default rather than by design. More importantly however, learning is oftenconcerned with …

Learning Styles And Student's Perception Of Teachers' Attitudes And Its Relation To Truancy Among African Americans Students In Secondary Education, Kenyetta Quenishia Nelson-Smith

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many researchers have examined the effect of truancy and student achievement. However, there has been little or no focus on the effect of truancy and non-attendance among ethnic minorities. The current study examined how African American students’ learning styles and their perceptions of teachers’ attitudes toward them and the learning environment influenced their decision to become high truants. Additionally, the study sought to find if selected demographic factors had any relevance on the truancy rate of African American students. The researcher used several assessment instruments to measure the variables being tested. The Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire (ILS), developed by …

Factors That Influence Traditional-Age College Students To Re-Enroll In Their Third Year At A Research Extensive University In The Southern Region Of The United States, Joseph M. Lutta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Student retention is of policy significance to higher education systems. In the United States, student retention is a major problem in higher education affecting students, universities, and society. Most of the research on student retention has focused on first-year students. Little is known about the retention of college students after their first year. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the influence of selected demographic and academic characteristics on the decision of traditional-age, undergraduate students to re-enroll at a research-extensive university. The population was defined as all traditional-age undergraduate students who entered the selected university during the fall …

Control And The Protean Career: A Critical Perspective From The Multinational’S International Assignees, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir

Articles

Mainstream management literature and research regarding the international career has long focused on the traditional expatriate experience. In this discourse the tendency has been to outline the benefits and issues to be considered for organizations and individuals embarking on international assignments. In contrast this chapter focuses on a special group whose positioning in the structures of employment and organization is in some ways exemplary of developing trends in the global labor force. They are the highly educated permanent expatriates who remain in the host country indefinitely (that is without a pre-determined organizational option of repatriation to their initial home country). …

Investigating Web-Based Recruitment Sources: Employee Testimonials Vs Word-Of-Mouse, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens Dec 2007

Investigating Web-Based Recruitment Sources: Employee Testimonials Vs Word-Of-Mouse, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although the internet has dramatically changed recruitment practices, many web-based recruitment sources have not yet been investigated. The present study examines the effects of web-based employee testimonials and web-based word-of-mouth (i.e., 'word-of-mouse') on organizational attraction. The source credibility framework is used to compare these company-dependent and company-independent recruitment sources. In a sample of potential applicants for a head nurse position, word-of-mouse was associated with higher organizational attractiveness than web-based employee testimonials. However, potential applicants were more attracted when testimonials provided information about individual employees than about the organization. Conversely, word-of-mouse was associated with higher organizational attractiveness and more organizational pursuit …

Measurement Invariance Of The Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire Across Three Countries, Filip Lievens, Frederik Anseel, Michael M. Harris, Jacob Eisenberg Dec 2007

Measurement Invariance Of The Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire Across Three Countries, Filip Lievens, Frederik Anseel, Michael M. Harris, Jacob Eisenberg

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, pay satisfaction has been increasingly studied in an international context, prompting the importance of examining whether the Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ) is invariant across countries other than the United States. This study investigated the measurement invariance across three countries, namely, the United States (N = 321), Belgium (N = 301), and Cyprus (N = 132). Results showed that the measurement structure of the PSQ was invariant across these different countries because there was no departure from measurement invariance in terms of factor form, factor pattern coefficients, factor variances, and factor covariances. These results show promise for the …

Measurement Equivalence In The Conduct Of A Global Organizational Survey Across Countries In Six Cultural Regions, Alain De Beuckelaer, Filip Lievens, Gilbert Swinnen Dec 2007

Measurement Equivalence In The Conduct Of A Global Organizational Survey Across Countries In Six Cultural Regions, Alain De Beuckelaer, Filip Lievens, Gilbert Swinnen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examined the measurement equivalence of a global organizational survey measuring six work climate factors as administered across 25 countries (N = 31.315) in all regions of the world (West Europe, East Europe, North America, Latin America, South America, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific). Across all countries, the survey instrument exhibited 'form equivalence' and 'metric equivalence', suggesting that respondents completed the survey using the same frame-of-reference and interpreted the rating scale intervals similarly. Schwartz's (1994, 1999, 2004) cultural value theory was then used for grouping the countries in cultural regions, and to anticipate measurement equivalence of the data from …
