Pearl Street Grill & Brewery came into existence in 1997 at 76 Pearl St in downtown Buffalo, NY. It was initially formed as a partnership between a group of local investors and the Wynkoop Brewing Company of Denver, Colorado which was already a successful brewpub operation.

After only a few short years into the partnership, the local investors bought the Wynkoop in 1999 and continued to develop the brewpub into the icon that it is today. Over the years, successive floors have been remodeled and opened to the public for restaurant and banquet space.

Since start of the Asian Economy crisis in 1997, most industries in Malaysia have been experiencing a difficult time. Tourism industry had to face several challenges such as currency fluctuations, negative media reports, stringent government policies, reduced market demands and global competition. The negative effects on the industry were compounded by the national economic slowdown, i.e., GDP contraction of 6.7 per cent in 1998. Tourist arrivals were also descended to a low of 5.5 million, compared to 6.2 million in 1997 (MATTA Annual Report 1998). The Impact Of Hospital Quality-Related Practices On Health Outcomes, Deborah A. Freund, Frank R. Lichtenberg

In this paper we analyze the cross-sectional relationship between hospital quality scores calculated by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and risk-adjusted indicators of outcomes and quality--mortality, rates of surgical/medical misadventures, adverse drug reactions, and length of stay--calculated from Nationwide Inpatient Sample discharge records. The results suggest that greater adherence to JCAHO accreditation standards is not associated with reduced mortality or lower probability of avoidable hospital or physician-caused adverse outcomes. Other hospital characteristics, such as teaching/non-teaching and urban/rural status, also exhibit little or no correlation with risk-adjusted survival and adverse-event probabilities.

Tourism: A Soft Touch For Increased Taxation, Frank Mcmahon

This paper reviews the changes which are taking place internationally in the taxation of the tourism industry and the reasons why tourism is especially susceptible to increased taxation. It compares VAT rates in European countries and assesses the relationship between those rates and increases in international tourism receipts, concluding that there is not the direct, negative relationship which hotel associations frequently cited in their submissions to government. The canons of taxation, first devised by Adam Smith are applied to current tourism taxation: some distortions caused by taxation are identified. The primary objective of this research was to explore the criteria that came into ply when a tourist judges one area over another. It examined the relative importance of tourist attributes in contributing to the attractiveness of a travel destination. This research is a study of over 1,000 German tourists to Ireland, having purchased and experienced the tourism product. Extensive review of consumer behaviour literature on theorists such as Schiffman and Kanuk (19940, Engel et al (1995), Lewis (1984 and 1987), Mowen (1995) and Loudon and Della Bitta (1993) laid a basis for research into tourism literature. During the summer months of 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998, the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies at the University of Central Florida has conducted a survey of Central Florida hospitality industry properties regarding wages paid and employee benefits. This five year project has been sponsored by the Hotel Human Resource Association of Central Florida and has been supported by the Central Florida Hotel Motel Association. This comprehensive study solicits and reports data on wages and benefits from 364 hospitality organizations covering 119 occupational/hourly job titles and 45 management/supervisory positions. The Las Vegas hotel and restaurant industries generate 27% of the total waste for Clark County, Nevada. In an effort to study and increase recycling participation in the hospitality industry, Las Vegas hotels and restaurants were contacted to participate in a collaborative project between UNLV's Department of Environmental Studies and the Clark County Health District's Environmental Health Division, The project involved interviewing establishments with recycling programs currently in place. Information gathered from interviews and program tours was used to develop programs for hotels and restaurants who were not yet recycling. From 1987 through 1992 the Las Vegas Flamingo Hilton instituted resource efficiency improvements in electrical, natural gas, water and materials consumption. In 1992, the Flamingo Hilton commissioned the University of Nevada Las Vegas Environmental Studies Department to analyze and quantify the improvements made by The Flamingo Hilton and investigate the potential for further improvements.

Historical billing data from the periods 1987 - 1992 were used to analyze past and present (1992) electric, natural gas and water consumption. Materials disposal data was only available for a ten month period in 1992. Pollutant emissions data were supplied by Nevada Power Company.
