The Caribbean countries have attracted increasing interest from students of American political history and the more their history is investigated, the more do we realize the growing significance of the role played by American capital in the development of their industries. If we want to understand thoroughly China's future potentiality, we must give our attention to her exports. Although the Portuguese have had direct trade with China since the sixteenth century, followed by Spanish, Dutch, and British traders, and although American ships were found in the waters of South China during the early nineteenth century, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that trade with the western world was actually opened. Since that time China's foreign trade has increased rapidly, especially her exports.
