Doctor Northrop, of New York City, was elected fifteenth president of the Association at the 1875 meeting at Niagara Falls. A considerable part of this meeting and the next was devoted to papers and discussions on the health of the dentist. Many dentists believed that dentistry was a particularly exhausting profession. Doctor Northrop was the first president of the First District Dental Society of New York and first president of the New York Odontological Society. His training was preceptorial and in 1867 he received an honorary dental degree from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. Doctor Northrop was born in …

Doctor Saporito, of Newark, New Jersey, became the one­hundred-and-ninth president of the Association at the 1972 meeting in San Francisco. The House of Delegates adopted policies regarding Health Maintenance Organizations and the use of radiographs in dental care programs. Doctor Saporito served the Association for six years as a member of the Board of Trustees and for eight years as a member of the House of Delegates. He was first vice president during 1963-1964. Luther Shepard Doctor Shepard, of Boston, was elected nineteenth president of the Association at the 1879 meeting at Niagara Falls. It was estimated that there were 12,000 practicing dentists in the United States at that time, and the Association voted to compile a complete directory of dentists, with the assistance of state societies. Doctor Shepard, a general practitioner, was on the dental department staff of the Harvard Medical School from 1868 until 1879. Doctor Merritt, of New York City, became the seventy­seventh president of the Association at the 1939 meeting in Milwaukee. In his presidential address, Doctor Merritt recommended expansion of the Association's activities, especially in dental health education and in research. Doctor Merritt, a periodontist, served as president of the New York Academy of Dentistry, the American Academy of Periodontology, and the American College of Dentists. He helped to found six dental journals, the Columbia University School of Dentistry, the International Association for Dental Research, the Children's Aid Society Dental Clinic, and the Guggenheim Dental Clinic. Doctor Buckley, of Los Angeles, became the sixtieth president of the Association at the 1922 meeting in Los Angeles. Under a new charter granted by the State of Illinois in June 1922, the name was changed from National Dental Association to American Dental Association. Doctor Buckley was president of the Illinois State Dental Society in 1915. He was professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery from 1904 to 1927, although his residence was in California after 1918. He was the author of a textbook used by many univer­sities, entitled Modern Dental Materia Medica, Pharmacology …

Doctor Brown, of Columbus, Ohio, was elected fifty-first president of the Association at the 191 3 meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. The Association was reorganized in 1913 under a new Constitution and Bylaws which established the House of Delegates and the Board of Trustees. Doctor Brown was chairman of the Committee on Dental Legislation for 21 years following his presidency. Through his efforts the status of dentists in the armed forces was equalized by law with that of physicians, and proposals for a sharp in­crease in tariffs on dental imports were defeated. Doctor Harlan, of Chicago, was elected thirtieth president of the Association at the 1890 meeting at Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He had served as first vice president the two preceding years and as corresponding secretary from 1882 until 1887. Doctor Harlan was professor of materia medica and therapeutics at the Chicago College of Dental Surgery for more than 20 years. He established the Dental Review and was its editor for many years. Doctor Harlan served as president of the Illinois and Chicago dental societies and as secretary of the World's Columbian Dental Congress. He was born in Indiana in 1851 and …

Doctor Oliver, of Philadelphia, became the sixty-eighth president of the Association at the 1930 meeting in Denver. His presidential address was a scholarly review of the history of the young profession of dentistry in the United States. Doctor Oliver served for many years as chief of the dental corps of the United States Army. Shortly after graduating in 1888 from the Indiana Dental College, he became professor of oral surgery at that institution. The Virgin Islands Dental Association was admitted as a constituent society of the American Dental Association. Doctor Ostrander, an endodontist and educator, was speaker of the House of Delegates from 1961 to 1966. He was a member of the Council on Dental Therapeutics for 18 years and was its chairman in 1960-1961. The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in Omaha; the change to Chicago was caused by wartime travel restrictions. Doctor Scherer, a professor of oral medicine and a private practitioner, served as president of the American Academy of Periodontology, the Houston Dental Society, and the Texas State Dental Society.
