JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – The Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP), an applied research academic program training college and graduate students to design community-based economic development initiatives across the Appalachian region, celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.
Supported by Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and organized by the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services (CASS) at East Tennessee State University, participating schools offer a directed seminar guiding students in developing and executing field-based research projects specific to the needs of their surrounding communities and in alignment with ARC’s investment priorities. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 2.
The class, which is limited to 13 in-person students and also offers a remote option, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified.
The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.

ETSU’s digital marketing master’s program, housed in the College of Business and Technology, launched in fall 2014 and offers a cutting edge, innovative curriculum consisting of 12 core courses covering topics such as social media, digital marketing strategy and research, web analytics and search marketing. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – The Women’s Studies Program at East Tennessee State University will host a two-day institute in January 2021 about infusing trauma-informed care principles into strategies for teaching and learning.
Dr. Phyllis Thompson, director of the Women’s Studies Program and associate professor in the Department of Literature and Language, is co-organizing the institute with members of the Women’s Studies Steering Committee. The project, “Trauma-Informed Strategies for Teaching and Learning: Creating a Culture of Belonging, Fostering Retention, and Increasing Degree Completion,” was one of seven projects funded by ETSU’s Instructional Development Committee.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 18, 2020) – Dr. Kathryn Wilhoit has been appointed interim dean for the College of Nursing at East Tennessee State University.
Wilhoit brings more than 40 years of experience in clinical and research-based nursing, administration and leadership experience to the largest nursing program in Tennessee. While serving as the Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive for Mountain States Health Alliance, she was responsible for the efforts that resulted in Johnson City Medical Center becoming the first hospital in Tennessee to receive Magnet Status. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 14, 2020) – The ETSU Health COVID-19 community collection site that delivers PCR molecular test results in 24 hours is moving to a new location at the East Tennessee State University Parking Garage, located at the corner of State of Franklin Road and Jack Vest Drive.
Beginning Monday, Dec. 14, the COVID-19 collection site will become a drive-through testing site, operating on the second floor of the parking garage. Pre-registration through the ETSU Health website (www.etsuhealth.org) is required for tests.

JOHNSON CITY – (Dec. 14, 2020) Ai Ishida, a doctoral candidate in the sport physiology and sport performance program in East Tennessee State University’s Clemmer College, is the recipient of the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Minority Scholarship for 2020.
The $2,000 scholarship is designed to encourage minorities to enter the field of strength and conditioning.
Ishida began the ETSU doctoral program in 2018 and also works with the ETSU women’s soccer team as a sport scientist where he assists coaches in developing plans for improving physical performance. He received his B.S. degree in sport sciences from Waseda University …

The ceremony featured special congratulatory remarks from U.S. Congressman Dr. Phil Roe and U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, as well as ETSU alumnus and Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield, who plays Henry Roswell on ABC’s “For Life.” During his time at ETSU, Busfield was involved with the theatre program and worked closely with faculty members Daryl Frank and Bud Frank. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 9, 2020) – Children in grades K-6 are invited to attend the Renaissance Child Winter Enrichment program at East Tennessee State University from Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23.
This three-day STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) experience, hosted by the ETSU Office of Professional Development, includes a field trip to the ETSU Planetarium with an emphasis on the winter sky and space.
Counselors have planned a variety of holiday arts and crafts, games and winter fun enrichment activities for campers, with outdoor play included as weather allows.

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 8, 2020) – Dr. Kate Beatty and Michael Meit, faculty in the East Tennessee State University College of Public Health’s Center for Rural Health Research, have co-authored an article in the Journal of Appalachian Health.
The article, “Rural Appalachia Battling the Intersection of Two Crises: COVID-19 and Substance Use Disorders,” discusses rural Appalachia’s great risk of unforeseen side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased mortality from substance use disorders.

JOHNSON CITY – (Dec. 8, 2020) Following a national search, Dr. Janna Scarborough has been named dean of the Clemmer College at East Tennessee State University.
Scarborough joined the ETSU faculty in 2006 and has served as interim dean for the past 20 months. For six years, she served as chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services and also held an associate dean appointment in the Clemmer College before assuming the interim deanship in March 2019.
