"Needlestick injuries (NSI) affect approximately 1,000 people per day across U.S. hospitals. Needlestick injuries cost an estimated $3,042 per victim annually, according to the report. The costs go toward laboratory fees for testing exposed employees, associated labor and counseling and post-exposure follow-ups." (Beckner's Clinical Leadership & Infection Control, 2020). It was noted at an urban teaching hospital that needlestick injuries are an issue. Researchers believe this number is an underestimate of the actual amount of needle stick injuries. JOHNSON CITY (April 1, 2021) — East Tennessee State University’s Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly meeting and several committee meetings on Friday, April 23. 



All meetings will be conducted in person at the ETSU Alumni Association office located in the Model Mill . Attendance will be limited to Trustees, presenters and support staff. All meetings will be livestreamed for public viewing. 



Meetings are scheduled as follows:

Education is premised on an institution’s ability to gather faculty and students, and to provide space and opportunities to produce and disseminate knowledge. Besides its direct medical and healthcare impact, COVID-19 has been a significant disruptor to the higher education sector. This paper highlights its impact on international student mobility, international collaborations, and the delivery of teaching and learning. To successfully ride out the recovery, institutions will need to build resilient strategies to operate in the new, post-COVID normal by engaging with stakeholders, ensuring financial sustainability, and embracing purposeful digital transformation in university operations, teaching, and learning.

Purpose: One of the main obstacles facing project-based learning (PBL) adoption relates to a lack of understanding by teachers and students in the roles they are required to play in the learning process. This study aims to address this obstacle, so as to better promote regular adoption of PBL pedagogy in educational institutions. Recent literature has advocated for the use of project based learning to engage students in active learning. This study examines how students’ learning of cultural intelligence and digital literacy are enhanced through an overseas project-based learning (PBL) programme at a Singapore University (UNIS), called the UNIS-XO pedagogy. Specifically, this study provides a framework through which students, faculty members, and industry partner can collaborate through consulting programs with the aim to provide feasible recommendations to the clients. In higher education, instructors must often pivot to new methods, approaches, and exercises to help students achieve learning objectives in a particular course. These course pivots can be challenging to navigate; however, they are often the difference between a successful course and an unsuccessful one. Research on the punctuated equilibrium model of group development provides important insights for instructors on managing and navigating course pivots. This article reviews research on midpoint transitions and discusses the benefits of implementing midpoint pivots. JOHNSON CITY (March 30, 2021) – Dr. Michael Kruppa, an East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine faculty member, has received a grant to study a global emerging fungal infection, Candida auris.

The National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, awarded a R21 grant to Kruppa for his study “Genetic Characterization of phosphomannan biosynthesis in C. auris.”  The two-year, $407,000 award is the first grant awarded to a researcher at ETSU to study Candida auris.

The ETSU Health COVID-19 vaccine clinics are now full. Patients who wish to add their names to a waitlist in case of cancellations may do so at www.etsuhealth.org. 

JOHNSON CITY (March 29, 2021) – ETSU Health will host COVID-19 vaccine clinics on Thursday, April 1; Saturday, April 3; Tuesday, April 6; and Thursday, April 8, by appointment only. These clinics are open to anyone age 18 and older, regardless of health condition.
