A Vanderbilt University professor and accomplished poet is coming to East Tennessee State University. 

The public will have two chances to interact with Major Jackson on Monday, Sept. 18.  

At 2 p.m. in the D.P. Culp Student Center, room 311, Jackson will take part in a roundtable discussion about poetry and writing. An audience question-and-answer session will follow. At 7 p.m., Jackson will read from his poetry in the Brown Hall Auditorium, with books for sale and book signing opportunities after both events.  

Jackson’s visit is part of the Black American Writer’s Series at ETSU.

(September 1, 2023) – The Appalachian Highlands Center for Nursing Advancement wrapped up a two-day summit on Friday that brought together key state and regional stakeholders to discuss and plan ways to strengthen the nursing pipeline across the region and the state.

From Roan Mountain and Mount Mitchell to Clingmans Dome and Mount LeConte, fall color is quickly increasing in the region’s most extreme elevations.  

“Colors move down in elevation as we progress through October,” said Travis Watson, East Tennessee State University’s campus arborist. “As for a drive through the mountains, the second and third weeks of October should be an excellent time.”

Take a closer look at East Tennessee State University’s Language and Culture Resource Center in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. 

The center, located in the D.P. Culp Student Center, offers opportunities for people within the ETSU and regional communities to share cultural experiences, celebrate diverse backgrounds and build connections between native English and multilingual speakers. 

Stephanie Roman De La Sancha says the center is a place where people “can come and unite and be together, and learn from one another, and grow together as a community.”

During its regular quarterly meeting held earlier today, the East Tennessee State University Board of Trustees set a new direction for the university's future in athletics and commemorated significant milestones in student enrollment.

New athletics program

To provide additional athletics opportunities for women, the board approved the establishment of a new women's Acrobatics and Tumbling athletics program. It is currently recognized as an emerging sport by the NCAA and is expected to achieve NCAA Championship Sport status by 2024.

After more than a decade of teaching at East Tennessee State University, Dr. Patrick Brown does not "stand still” in his instructional design.

Brown, an associate professor in the ETSU College of Public Health’s Department of Health Sciences, chaired the committee that helped to lay the groundwork for ETSU’s Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), and he continues to champion teaching excellence at ETSU and nationally as an expert in the POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) method of instruction.

The 56^th annual East Tennessee State University Alumni Golf Classic will be held at Cattails at MeadowView in Kingsport on Friday, Sept. 22.

The two-person select shot tournament, hosted by the ETSU National Alumni Association, is open to the community, including alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the university. East Tennessee State University alumnus Yaroslav (Yaro) Hnatusko has worked tirelessly since February 2022 to provide support for his home country of Ukraine through the nonprofit organization, Restore Ukraine, he founded with his brother. 

Though he has already allocated more than $2 million worth of humanitarian aid to vulnerable Ukrainian communities, his efforts to provide support haven’t stopped.  

He is continuing to provide assistance to a cause that means so much to him by organizing a benefit comedy show, where every purchased ticket will bring remote and abandoned communities much closer to critical aid.
