Nationwide Branching: Some Lessons From California, Lynne Doti Jan 1991

Nationwide Branching: Some Lessons From California, Lynne Doti

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

California provides a case study of a large and diverse geographic area with few restrictions on branch banking. In spite of the lack of restrictions, branching occurred primarily in two periods, the 1920's and 1960's. Large banks took over smaller banks during these periods, but, particularly in the 1960's, new banks opened to fill the gap. Branching without limitation did not result in a few banks dominating the market.

Actuarial Computation Of Multiemployer Pension Plan Withdrawal Liability, Kelly A. Renze Jan 1991

Actuarial Computation Of Multiemployer Pension Plan Withdrawal Liability, Kelly A. Renze

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This project helps to demonstrate how pension actuaries must keep a constant eye on new laws. The pension industry is constantly bombarded with new laws which force them to alter policies and procedures. Because of the huge number of laws, it is difficult for all employees to fully understand every law. During my stay at the Principal, I discovered that many passages are interpreted differently by different people. I also uncovered some details through my research that other employees were not aware of.

Because of this complexity, it is often necessary to assign to one person, such as myself, the …

Bulletin No 4176 - Agroforestry With Widely Spaced Pine Trees, Richard Moore, Peter Jenkins, Geoff Anderson, Phil Scott Jan 1991

Bulletin No 4176 - Agroforestry With Widely Spaced Pine Trees, Richard Moore, Peter Jenkins, Geoff Anderson, Phil Scott

Bulletins 4000 -

Combining a softwood timber crop with other forms of agriculture on the same land can make better use of available space, soil and water, and lead to higher productivity from farms.

This Bulletin outlines the potential benefits of, and a programme for, the growing of pine on farmland in Western Australia in conjunction with either pasture or another crop. The agroforestry system described has been well researched in Westem Australia.

The main objectives of agroforestry are to produce high quality timber while maintaining adequate pasture for either grazing or fodder cropping until the timber is harvested.

Dividend Signalling, Cash Flow, And Market Reaction: An Empirical Investigation, Zheng Gu Jan 1991

Dividend Signalling, Cash Flow, And Market Reaction: An Empirical Investigation, Zheng Gu

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Financial signaling theory has hypothesized that signals are backed up by improved cash flow. The relationship between signals and cash flow, however, has never been empirically investigated. The purpose of this paper is to conduct such an investigation by examining the relationship between cash flow and dividend signal, the most frequently employed financial signal. In particular, this study examines if there are false dividend signals that are not supported by better cash flow and how the market reacts to them. A two-stage empirical dividend signalling model is developed. Unexpected dividend increases of non-financial and non-regulated firms from 1982 through 1986 …

The Information Content Of Standard & Poor's Common Stock Ranking Changes, James Felton Dec 1990

The Information Content Of Standard & Poor's Common Stock Ranking Changes, James Felton

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the information content of Standard & Poor's common stock ranking changes. These rankings are derived from a system which begins with a computer-generated score for per-share growth, stability, and cyclicality of earnings and dividends for the most recent ten years of available data. Standard & Poor's then makes adjustments to the scores based on firm size, sales volume, "relative current standing,'1 and special considerations. The eight rankings are as follows: A+ (Highest), A (High), A- (Above Average), B+ (Average), B (Below Average), B- (Lower), C (Lowest), and D (In Reorganization). Although the rankings are not purported to …

Free Bank Failures In New York And Wisconsin: A Portfolio Analysis, Andrew J. Economopoulos Oct 1990

Free Bank Failures In New York And Wisconsin: A Portfolio Analysis, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Rolnick and Weber found that a sharp decline in asset prices led to bank panics and, ultimately, bank failures during the free banking era. An examination of New York and Wisconsin free bank portfolios prior to a fall in asset prices indicates banks that weathered the turmoil held significantly different portfolios than closed banks. In general, solvent banks held more loans and specie, and issued more deposits and less bank notes than closed banks.

A Comparative Analysis Of Value Line, Standard And Poor's And Moody's Industiral Bond Ratings, Billie Ann Brotman

Faculty Articles

This paper compares and contrasts financial strength ratings assigned by Value Line, Standard and Poor's, and Moody's. All of these rating agencies use modified ratings. When modifiers are considered, these agencies agree between 85 to 97 percent of the time. A model using stock market information as well as liquidity, leverage, activity and profitability ratios is presented. Cronbach's alpha, a measure of reliability, is calculated for each rating class, and the entire data set.

Bulletin No 4172 - Using Gross Margins, Peter Eckersley Jan 1990

Bulletin No 4172 - Using Gross Margins, Peter Eckersley

Bulletins 4000 -

The gross margin of a farm activity is the difference Variable or direct costs are those which change according between the gross income earned and the variable costs to the size of the activity, for example, drenches, dips and incurred.

Gross margins are useful for comparing similar farm activities. They are best expressed in terms of that farm resource which is most limiting (for example, per hectare, per dollar invested or per labour unit). Gross margins can be used to compare the performance of current activities or to predict the performance of a potential alternative activity.

They should not be …

Takeovers, Prasanna Chandra Dec 1989

Takeovers, Prasanna Chandra

IIMB Management Review

A takeover generally involves the acquisition of a certain block of equity capital of a company which enables the acquirer to exercise control over the affairs of the company. In theory, the acquirer must buy more than 50 percent of the paid-up equity of the acquired company to enjoy complete control. In practice, however, effective control can be exercised with a smaller holding, usually between 10 and 40 percent, because the remaining shareholders, scattered and ill-organized, are not likely to challenge the control of the acquirer. Takeover mania appears to be sweeping the Indian corporate world. This has perhaps been …

Capital Market Efficiency And Financial Reporting, R Narayanswamy Dec 1989

Capital Market Efficiency And Financial Reporting, R Narayanswamy

IIMB Management Review

The role of accounting information in an efficient market has been a subject of study in the U.S.A. in the seventies and eighties. Systematic and rigorous research in the field has led to significant findings that have major implications for investors, managers, auditors and accounting standard setters. If these research findings can be sustained under varying conditions, the debate over financial reporting issues will change qualitatively —from issues of form of reporting accounting) to issues of substance (i.e. disclosure).

This article reviews the findings in several studies, presents them in a classified way that helps linking their relationship and examines …
