Asean Bond Market Integration: What Drives Cross-Border Bond Investment In Asean?, Angelo Taningco Jan 2018

Asean Bond Market Integration: What Drives Cross-Border Bond Investment In Asean?, Angelo Taningco

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Bond market integration in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) appears to be relatively low or weak especially in terms of intraregional bond investment despite the robust growth in bond market size in recent years and policy initiatives in support of developing bond markets in the region. This paper aims to contribute to the literature on ASEAN financial integration by providing empirical evidence and policy insights on what can help boost intra-ASEAN bond investment. Using panel regression following a gravity model framework and spanning five major ASEAN member countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand—over the 2001–2014 period, this …

Is A Regional Credit Rating Agency For The Asean Feasible?, Tereso S. Tullao Jr, Christopher James R. Cabuay,, Daniel S. Hofileña

DLSU Business & Economics Review

In the spirit of deepening the bond markets of the ASEAN+3 region, as well as addressing the inadequacies put forth by the underrating of bonds by global credit rating agencies (GCRAs) and their lack of recognition of domestic CRAs’ (DCRAs) ratings, we look into the feasibility of a regional CRA (RCRA). Establishing an RCRA is faced with hurdles related to institutional and reputational constraints, mechanisms of information exchange, compatibility of financial reports, operational limitations, governance structure, and regulatory frameworks. In this light, we provide a brief discussion on potential alternatives such as the credit ratings initiative of the National University …

Testing The Assumptions Of Slippery Slope Framework On Tax Compliance: Evidence From Nigerian Smes, Augustine Ayuba, Natrah Saad, Zaimah Zainol Ariffin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper integrates the assumptions of the Slippery Slope Framework in explaining the tax compliance of small and medium enterprises. This study tests these assumptions in relation to SMEs taxpayers to further reestablish the applicability of the framework with different kinds of taxpayers. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS – SEM) further supported the framework in analyzing the data of this study. The findings reveal that perceived corruption along with perceived service orientation strongly interact each other in expounding the paradox surrounding tax compliance.

Anticipation And Reaction To Going Concern Modified Audit Opinions By Sophisticated Investors, Marshall A. Geiger, Abdullah Kumas Jan 2018

Anticipation And Reaction To Going Concern Modified Audit Opinions By Sophisticated Investors, Marshall A. Geiger, Abdullah Kumas

Accounting Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to examine whether institutional investors (i) anticipate a distressed firm's receipt of a first‐time going‐concern modified audit opinion, and (ii) react to a first‐time going‐concern modified opinion by engaging in abnormal net selling of firm shares. Using a proprietary database of US institutional investor trades, we find that institutional investors are net sellers of first‐time going‐concern opinion firms beginning 6 months before the release of the report and remain net sellers through the subsequent 3 months. We also find that the severity of the reasons auditors modify their opinions is associated with increased trading …

Potential Vs. Realized Savings Under Automatic Enrollment, John Beshears, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 2018

Potential Vs. Realized Savings Under Automatic Enrollment, John Beshears, James J. Choi, David Laibson, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

Employer adoption of automatic enrollment can dramatically increase retirement savings plan participation. However, many savings plan participants withdraw some, or even all, of their accumulated balances prior to reaching retirement. The extent to which individuals’ preretirement withdrawal decisions, sometimes months or even years after they have been automatically enrolled, offset the increased savings induced by automatic enrollment is an open question. We explore this issue by studying the evolution of retirement savings outcomes over time for the employees at a large firm that introduced automatic enrollment in 2005. Comparing employees hired in the 12 months after the introduction of automatic …

Financial Crowding Out Of Ghanaian Private Sector Corporations, Andrews Kwablah Jan 2018

Financial Crowding Out Of Ghanaian Private Sector Corporations, Andrews Kwablah

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The government of Ghana borrows from both domestic and foreign sources to finance the budget deficit. By the year 2013, the domestic debt was 55% of the public debt. Government domestic borrowing is competitive and can potentially crowd out the private corporate sector. Therefore, the specific research problem addressed in this study was whether the Ghanaian government's domestic debt (DEBT) caused financial crowding out (FCO) in Ghana. FCO theory is not conclusive and not proven specifically for Ghana, so the purpose of this research was to investigate its presence in Ghana. The neoclassical theory of FCO underpinned the research. The …

Association Of Insider Trading Patterns With Earnings Management Citations From 2002-2012, Anne-Mary Emuobonuvie Nash-Haruna

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Insider trading and earnings management (EM) have traditionally been associated with fraud and corporate scandals. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental study was to examine the association between insider trading patterns and EM citations among a randomly selected sample of publicly traded companies. The research question pertained to the association between the number of EM citations and whether a firm exhibited patterns of insider trading among publicly traded firms. Purposeful sampling was used to select 25 senior participants who were directly involved with the monitoring of banks from CBN. The agency theory served as the conceptual framework. The sources …

Biotech Fever: Market Overreaction To Fda Clinical Trials, Ethan J. Hugstad

Honors Program Theses

Picture this: someone buys the stock of a firm that is about to announce the results of a drug’s FDA clinical trial the next day. They go to bed that night, imagining the potential of their newly owned business to finally cure a disease that has impacted so many families. They wake up the next morning to find that the firm has lost half of its market value because the drug failed. This is the stark reality that many small investors face: the unpredictability of price movements in response to nonfinancial information being released to the public.

Random Walks And Market Efficiency: Evidence From Real Estate Investment Trusts (Reit) Subsectors, Fahad Almudhaf, Andrew J. Hansz Jan 2018

Random Walks And Market Efficiency: Evidence From Real Estate Investment Trusts (Reit) Subsectors, Fahad Almudhaf, Andrew J. Hansz

Finance Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the random walk behavior of real estate investment trust (REIT) subsectors using monthly return data from January 1994 to July 2015. Using variance ratio tests, we examine subsectors of lodging/ resorts and self-storage and find that they do not follow a random walk, contradicting the weak-form efficient market hypothesis. Nonparametric runs tests help us find that office, industrial, mixed, free standing, shopping centers, apartments, manufactured homes, and timberland subsectors are weak-form efficient. The evidence in this study supports the idea that some subsectors are more informationally efficient than other subsectors. Copyright © 2018 The Author(s).

Does The Market Believe White Knights And Hostile Bidders Are Acting In Their Shareholders' Interest?, John M. Griffith, Mohammad Najand, Jiancheng Shen

Finance Faculty Publications

This study examines why white knights suffer significant losses while their rival hostile bidders experience significant abnormal gains. We address two research questions: 1) Does the market believe that white knights and hostile bidders are acting in their shareholders' interest? 2) Does Tobin's q explain why white knights suffer significant losses and hostile bidders experience significant gains upon the announcement of their bids? The results show that hostile bidders are value-maximizing investors and white knights are not acting in their shareholders' interest. Instead, white knights suffered significant reductions in value and historically have not maximized the wealth of investors

Neighborhood Effects On Speculative Behavior, Todd Mitton, Keith Vorkink, Ian Wright Jan 2018

Neighborhood Effects On Speculative Behavior, Todd Mitton, Keith Vorkink, Ian Wright

Faculty Publications

Speculative behavior plays a key role in numerous markets, but little is known about its causes. We test for neighborhood effects on speculative behavior using daily lottery sales data from 20 states in the U.S. In a sample of 160,000 retailers, lottery sales in a census block increase by $0.26, on average, for each $1 increase in neighboring blocks. We test whether this correlation is attributable to contextual effects, correlated effects, or endogenous effects. Our analysis suggests that social interaction is an important cause of speculative behavior.

Regulating Complacency: Human Limitations And Legal Efficacy, Steven L. Schwarcz Jan 2018

Regulating Complacency: Human Limitations And Legal Efficacy, Steven L. Schwarcz

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines how insights into limited human rationality can improve financial regulation. The Article identifies four categories of limitations—herd behavior, cognitive biases, overreliance on heuristics, and a proclivity to panic—that undermine the perfect-market regulatory assumptions that parties have full information and will act in their rational self-interest. The Article then analyzes how insights into these limitations can be used to correct resulting market failures. Requiring more robust disclosure and due diligence, for example, can help to reduce reliance on misleading information cascades that motivate herd behavior. Debiasing through law, such as requiring more specific, poignant, and concrete disclosure of …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This paper examines return predictability of three types of trading volumes include total volumes, buy volumes and sell volumes in Thailand's stock market between 2012 to 2018. To measure predictability ability, we sort securities into group base on the level of trading volumes and type of volumes. We test and confirm that buy volumes and sell volumes can predict return one day after the abnormal trading event. Abnormal high buy volumes can predict positive next day return of that security while abnormal high sell volumes can predict negative next day return. In addition, we test and found that positive return …

Why Stock Distribution Announcement Causes Abnormal Return, Napas Chailapakul Jan 2018

Why Stock Distribution Announcement Causes Abnormal Return, Napas Chailapakul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research investigated empirically why stock distribution announcement causes abnormal return. For stock split companies, the evidences support that liquidity improvement could be the first possible reason of occurrence of abnormal return during announcement date. The main groups of investors who increase their trading activity are retail and foreign investors. This study also presents another reason that is the occurrence of abnormal return during effective date. It is possible that this abnormal return comes from the increasing of buying demand flow during effective date. However, this study does not discover the evidence which support those two reasons in stock dividend …

This paper provided evidences that costs management is affected by many factors and investors can use this knowledge to analyze the firm's cost management practices. Selling, General, and Administrative Costs (SG&A) appears to be sticky and showed that costs management is asymmetric. The cost stickiness occurs when the SG&A costs decrease by smaller percentage with revenue decrease compare to SG&A costs increase with revenue increase. This paper explored various factors that might have influence on the stickiness of SG&A costs using linear regression. Factors such as managerial ownership and ownership concentration are found to decrease cost stickiness in different periods. …

The Impact Of Advertising Share Of Voice On The Idiosyncratic Risk Of The Firm, Sungkyun Moon, Kapil R. Tuli, Anirban Mukherjee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Integrating literature in marketing, finance and accounting, this study examines the impact ofa firms’ advertising share of voice (ASOV) on investors’ uncertainty about its future financialperformance, i.e., firms’ idiosyncratic risk. Drawing on signaling theory, authors propose that ASOV serves as a signal for investors such that higher ASOV reduces idiosyncratic risk. Consistent with this argument, analysis of 2,777 publicly listed firms over a two-decade period (1995-2014) shows that ASOV has a significant negative effect on idiosyncratic risk.In addition, consistent with the argument that ASOV is a more credible signal when firmshave higher cash flows; authors find that the negative impact …
