InvestorS Hindsight Effect And True Timing Ability Of Tax Saving Mutual Funds, Krittapon Chaleoykitti
InvestorS Hindsight Effect And True Timing Ability Of Tax Saving Mutual Funds, Krittapon Chaleoykitti
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper analyze the cash flow timing ability of mutual fund investors both non-tax-saving and tax-saving funds which have constraints such as lock-up period to block investor's ability to make cash flow timing, after controlling for the hindsight effect. We analyze the sample of Thai mutual funds in the period of 2006-2017.
We find that investors have bad timing ability and make return underperformance. The tax-saving funds that have investment constraints to block investor's timing ability have better timing ability and tends to have smart money effect and make return over performance. In addition, volatility affect investors to increase the …
Do President Trump’S Tweets Increase Uncertainty In The Us Economy?, Michael Simpson
Do President Trump’S Tweets Increase Uncertainty In The Us Economy?, Michael Simpson
Honors Theses and Capstones
When President Trump tweets, does it change uncertainty in the economy? This study gathers President Trump’s tweets off his twitter accounts from October 2016 to October 2017 and classifies each of them as either negative (expected to increase uncertainty), positive (expected to decrease uncertainty) or neutral (no effect expected on uncertainty). I find that tweets with a negative sentiment were followed by an increase in uncertainty in the VIX and S&P 500 1 and 2 minutes after the tweet. Similar results were found for positive tweets. Non-neutral tweets increase trading volume in the VIX and S&P 500 by up to …
Big-Box Stores And Urban Land Prices: Friend Or Foe?, Barrett A. Slade
Big-Box Stores And Urban Land Prices: Friend Or Foe?, Barrett A. Slade
Faculty Publications
This study examined the effect of a new Walmart store on nearby U.S. urban land prices and found that, within one quarter mile of a new Walmart store locale, land prices increased by almost 39% over the four-year development time period. Supercenters and commercial land sales were instrumental in driving the positive price effects. Robustness tests found a positive land price effect with other big-box stores, suggesting that the land price effect was not limited to Walmart stores, but in fact, was a big-box store effect.
Monthly Payment Targeting And The Demand For Maturity, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer
Monthly Payment Targeting And The Demand For Maturity, Bronson Argyle, Taylor Nadauld, Christopher Palmer
Faculty Publications
We provide evidence of mental accounting in the market for consumer installment debt and argue that increases in credit supply have been an important contributor in the recent rise in auto debt through a demand-for-maturity channel. Since the Great Recession, auto debt has grown faster than any other category of U.S. consumer credit and now eclipses credit cards in total debt outstanding. Simultaneously, auto-loan maturities have increased such that more than half of 2016 auto-loan originations had a term of over 65 months. We document three phenomena we jointly refer to as monthly payment targeting using data from millions of …
Hong Kong Unrest And Implications For The Hang Seng Index, Lucia Morales, Bernadette Andreosso-O’Callaghan
Hong Kong Unrest And Implications For The Hang Seng Index, Lucia Morales, Bernadette Andreosso-O’Callaghan
Articles
With the September 2014 ‘Umbrella Revolution’ in Hong Kong, China faced one of the biggest political challenges since the Tiananmen Square events. Beijing’s proposed electoral reform was perceived as a direct attack to democracy, and the ensuing protest triggered concerns amid local and international investors; the financial sector took the hardest hit, with stocks of companies exposed to the Hong Kong market facing significant losses. Volatility continued to increase to a seven-month high over worries that the student blockade in Hong Kong’s streets could drag on for longer than expected. The econometric-based analysis in this paper looks at the implications …

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been found to be a strong predictor of a favorable corporate image [Gray, 1986. Managing the corporate image: The key to public trust. London: Quorum Books]. Websites have become an essential communication platform [Dawkins, 2004. Corporate responsibility: The communication challenge. Journal of Communication Management, 9(2), 108–119]. This study aims to investigate how CSR can be used in enhancing organizational corporate image. Content analyses of 150 corporate websites of organizations in Asia headquartered in Singapore were conducted, followed by in-depth interviews with public relations (PR) practitioners to examine the motivations behind their CSR engagement. Findings showed …
A Study On The Impact Of Technological Advancement On Community Bank Performance, Andre Ong
A Study On The Impact Of Technological Advancement On Community Bank Performance, Andre Ong
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This study investigates the impact of technological advancement in community bank lending, more specifically, how online financial product and service offerings affect community banks' performance. Community banks, institutions with assets under $1 billion are praised as relationship banking specialists, are important source of credit to individuals and businesses. Their productive performance is highly beneficial for the economic development of the communities and customers that they serve, yet community banks' competitive power against large banks has become increasingly more challenging. Technological advancements radically shift all production and service based industries, including the banking industry and its institutions' offerings. The increasing use …
Balancing Internal Controls With Change Management In The Pacific Military Unit, Miriam Seveses Mefford
Balancing Internal Controls With Change Management In The Pacific Military Unit, Miriam Seveses Mefford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Federal government managers were advised to strengthen internal controls; the law dictates attestation of effective management controls, and the internal control program is used to detect risks. However, managers lacked preparatory training, with training being overlooked given the increased responsibilities. Managers are assigned the programmatic role regardless of the lack of program standards in knowledge, skill, and ability. The research questions addressed change management components, concepts, and core qualifications relative to program readiness. The purpose of this single case study was to identify and explore change management components contributing to the effectiveness of internal controls. The conceptual framework was based …
Financial Literacy In Appalachian Kentucky With A National Comparison, Tanya Noah
Financial Literacy In Appalachian Kentucky With A National Comparison, Tanya Noah
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Financial literacy is a national problem; many studies confirmed that Americans have low levels of financial literacy. There is little to no research about financial literacy in Appalachia, and the level of financial literacy was unknown for Appalachian Kentucky. There is a problem deserving attention which can be seen by examination of the 3 key financial indicators. Many researchers found the Appalachian Kentucky region deficient regarding poverty rates, unemployment rates, and personal income rates. The purpose of this study was to develop a baseline level of financial literacy of Appalachian Kentuckians and to compare it to national levels. Becker's theory …

Shared Service Center Strategies In Public Sector, Andrieta G. Pritchett
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
With the increased demand for doing more with less, public sector managers embrace outsourcing back-office functions through a shared service model; however, maintaining service quality for public sector shared service centers (SSC) in financial management during peak cycles is a challenge. Framed with the transaction cost economy theory, the purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies used by SSC managers in a public sector company to maintain service quality. Seven participants with more than 4 years of SSC experience in public-sector companies participated in phone interviews including SSC department heads, managers, and a supervisor of a public-sector …

Strategies For Sustainability Of Nonfranchise Casual Dining Restaurants, Kristin Burke Martin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, over 50% of restaurants fail within the first 5 years of operations resulting in approximately $2.1 billion annually in lost national sales revenue. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies used by owners of nonfranchise, casual dining restaurants to ensure sustainability longer than 5 years. The study was grounded in Porter's 5 forces framework as a lens for identifying effective strategies that promote restaurant sustainability. The data collection process comprised gathering data and information via semistructured interviews with 3 owners of nonfranchise, casual dining restaurants in the mid-Atlantic region who sustained …

Early Detection And Prevention Of Corporate Financial Fraud, Marcia Schillermann
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The economic cost of financial statement fraud continues to be a problem for organizations and society. The research problem addressed in this study was the limited risk management strategies available for the early detection and prevention of financial statement fraud by corporate managers and auditors. These strategies are important to the proactive prevention of fraud. This study is important to future trustworthiness of financial statements. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple-case study was to explore current early detection and prevention methods in financial statement fraud using a risk management conceptual framework. The research question focused on current fraud detection and …

Modelling And Forecasting Stock Price Movements With Serially Dependent Determinants, Rasika Yatigammana, Shelton Peiris, Richard Gerlach, David Edmund Allen
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The direction of price movements are analysed under an ordered probit framework, recognising the importance of accounting for discreteness in price changes. By extending the work of Hausman et al. (1972) and Yang and Parwada (2012),This paper focuses on improving the forecast performance of the model while infusing a more practical perspective by enhancing flexibility. This is achieved by extending the existing framework to generate short term multi period ahead forecasts for better decision making, whilst considering the serial dependence structure. This approach enhances the flexibility and adaptability of the model to future price changes, particularly targeting risk minimisation. Empirical …

Relating Group Size And Posting Activity Of An Online Community Of Financial Investors: Regularities And Seasonal Patterns, P. Racca, R. Casarin, Pierpaolo Dondio, F. Squazzoni

Group size can potentially affect collective activity and individual propensity to contribute to collective goods. Mancur Olson, in his Logic of Collective Action, argued that individual contribution to a collective good tends to be lower in groups of large size. Today, online communication platforms represent an interesting ground to study such collaborative dynamics under possibly different conditions (e.g., lower costs related to gather and share information). This paper examines the relationship between group size and activity in an online financial forum, where users invest time in sharing news, analysis and comments with other investors. We looked at about 24 million …

Success Strategies For Small Financial Planning Firms, Joanne H. Snider, Kevin J. Davies
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
Small Business Administration statistics indicate that 20% of small businesses fail within the first 2 years and 50% fail within 5 years. The purpose of this case study was to explore the success factors and strategies of 12 small business owners of independent financial planning firms who achieved profitability beyond 5 years. The conceptual framework was entrepreneurship theory and Porter’s five forces model of competitive strategy. The data gathering method included semistructured interviews and analysis of business artifacts such as websites and newsletters. Initial coding of the responses preceded an analysis of recurring patterns and themes. The major themes identified …

This paper presents a study of the effectiveness of monetary policy on financialintermediation. Specifically, I aim to determine how commercial banks responded, viacommercial lending, to the trillions of dollars of policy innovations to stimulate the creditmarkets during the 2008 global financial crisis. To that end, I compare the change incommercial lending by United States-based commercial banks during the stimulus period ofOctober 1, 2007 through September 30, 2011 to that activity in the earlier non-stimulus periodof October 1, 2002 through September 30, 2006. After comparing 1,977 commercial loans inthe stimulus period and 1,844 loans in the non-stimulus period, I find that …

Do Nonparametric Measures Of Extreme Equity Risk Change The Parametric Ordinal Ranking? Evidence From Asia, Robert J. Powell, Duc H. Vo., Thach N. Pham
Do Nonparametric Measures Of Extreme Equity Risk Change The Parametric Ordinal Ranking? Evidence From Asia, Robert J. Powell, Duc H. Vo., Thach N. Pham
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
There has been much discussion in the literature about how central measures of equity risk such as standard deviation fail to account for extreme tail risk of equities. Similarly, parametric measures of value at risk (VaR) may also fail to account for extreme risk as they assume a normal distribution which is often not the case in practice. Nonparametric measures of extreme risk such as nonparametric VaR and conditional value at risk (CVaR) have often been found to overcome this problem by measuring actual tail risk without applying any predetermined assumptions. However, this article argues that it is not just …

Rmb Exchange Rates And Volatility Spillover Across Financial Markets In China And Japan, Fengming Qin, Junru Zhang, Zhaoyong Zhang
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study examines empirically the volatility spillover effects between the RMB foreign exchange markets and the stock markets by employing daily returns of the Chinese RMB exchange rates and the stock markets in China and Japan during the period in 1998–2018. We find evidence that there exist co-volatility effects among the financial markets in China and Japan, and the volatility of RMB exchange rates contribute to the co-volatility spillovers across the financial markets. Reversely, the return shock from the stock markets can also generate co-volatility spillover to the foreign exchange markets. The bidirectional relationship reveals that both the fundamental hypothesis …

We study the association between human capital and rollovers into Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), using administrative records from the defined contribution savings plan for U.S. government employees: the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Employees who separate from government employment have the option to leave balances in the TSP, where fees are currently under 4 basis points. However, we estimate that more than a third of the TSP balances end up being rolled over into IRA accounts, which are very likely to have much higher fees. We find that educational attainment has a very small positive association with the propensity to roll …

Naked Open Market Manipulation And Its Effects, Merritt B. Fox, Lawrence R. Glosten, Gabriel Rauterberg
Faculty Scholarship
More than 80 years after US federal law first addressed stock market manipulation, there is still dispute about manipulation law’s foundational principles; this chapter aims to provide clarity by offering an analytical framework for understanding a specific manipulation. There has been a sharp split among the federal circuits concerning manipulation law’s central question: Can trading activity alone ever be considered illegal manipulation? Economists and legal scholars do not agree on whether manipulation is possible in principle, let alone on how to address it properly in practice. The framework offered by this chapter aims to help clarify federal law and may …
Is The Accruals Anomaly More Persistent In Firms With Weak Internal Controls?, Kanishk Kapur
Is The Accruals Anomaly More Persistent In Firms With Weak Internal Controls?, Kanishk Kapur
CMC Senior Theses
In 1996, Sloan identified the accruals anomaly, in which the negative relationship between the accruals component of current earnings and subsequent stock returns can be exploited to generate excess returns. One would expect the accruals anomaly to dissipate and ultimately disappear as investors take advantage of the now-public information. However, nearly two decades later, it persists as one of the most prominent and contentious anomalies; its magnitude of current and future excess returns still remain controversial. The main reason for its persistence is that extreme accrual firms possess characteristics that are unappealing to most investors. These characteristics, which include insufficient …
You Can Run But You Can’T Hide: The Advance Of Shareholder Activism, Kendall Greenberg
You Can Run But You Can’T Hide: The Advance Of Shareholder Activism, Kendall Greenberg
CMC Senior Theses
Shareholder activism has exploded in popularity since the turn of the century, due in large part to impressive relative returns generated by its major participants. The result has thus been a surge in assets invested in the category, to in excess of $170 billion today up from less than $3 billion in 2000 (Inglis 2015; Romito 2015). This influx of capital, in absolute dollars and pace of growth, has caused many to wonder whether activists truly create shareholder value and, if so, if the value generated is sustainable. Numerous studies of activist interventions prior to 2009 reveal significant stock price …

Do Investors Still Gravitate To Preferred Habitats On The Us Treasury Yield Curve?, Kenneth S. Dreifus, Angelo Decandia, Elliott Goldberg, Mohammed Chowdhury
New York School for Career and Applied Studies (NYSCAS) Publications and Research
The purpose of this study is to test the preferred habitat theory non-econometrically using interviews with the help of a questionnaire for self-guidance on a group of focused investors. Frequencies and simple percentages were used to analyze data. Though many generations of post-World War II economics and finance students were taught that the nature of the liabilities on the balance sheet and the desire to avoid mismatches against assets caused particular classes of investors to gravitate to a preferred habitat on the yield curve, our study based on the responses to questionnaires by a group of U.S. based bond traders …

The Influences Of Locus Of Control, Debt Overhang, And Framing On Saving For Retirement, Patrick Ilcin
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This study evaluates locus of control, debt overhang, and framing effects as potential drivers of retirement savings decisions. We use a hypothetical scenario administered through an online survey to analyze how much an individual will save for retirement. The study finds that individuals who measure as having an external locus of control (based off the Rotter I-E scale), contribute significantly less to their retirement savings than individuals with an internal locus of control. Interestingly, this study finds no significant relationship between debt overhang and initial contributions. To measure framing effects, participants were given the choice to change their initial contribution …

The Case For More Debt: Expanding College Affordability By Expanding Income-Driven Repayment, John R. Brooks
The Case For More Debt: Expanding College Affordability By Expanding Income-Driven Repayment, John R. Brooks
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) for federal student loans is rapidly becoming the primary tool that the federal government uses to provide progressive funding to individuals to pay for college. Under these programs, borrowers can choose to pay back their loans as a percentage of income, with eventual debt forgiveness after 10-25 years. If administered well, these programs can make student loans affordable for everyone, regardless of income. In this symposium essay, I argue that for IDR to meet its goal of providing affordable higher education to everyone, the federal government needs to raise the individual borrowing limits on Direct Loans and …
