Is Greener Really Better? Stock Market Reaction To Green Bond Announcements, Evidence From Europe, Niya Somkerd Jan 2022

Is Greener Really Better? Stock Market Reaction To Green Bond Announcements, Evidence From Europe, Niya Somkerd

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Employing an event-study approach, we examine how the stock market responded to the offering of green bonds by non-financial companies listed on the European stock market from January 2013 to September 2022. We observed a drop, on average about 0.28%, in the company stock prices on the day they announced these offerings and the day after. Moreover, we found that investors react in the same manner for green bond announcements as for conventional bond announcements. We also studied if the Gavriilidis (2021)'s climate policy uncertainty index has any relationship with the market reactions. Our findings suggest that the index is …

Post-Earnings Announcement Drift In Thai Reits - A Take From The Recent Pandemic, Chawan Ratapana

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The research explores the information content of earnings announcements in REITs operating in a market with less stable rental incomes. By examining the presence of Post-Earnings-Announcement Drift (PEAD) in Thai REITs, this study contributes to existing literature and investigates changes in market efficiency for REITs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the Earnings Announcement Returns (EAR) method, the study analyzes abnormal returns through visual analysis and a trust/firm-level regression framework. Findings indicate a PEAD effect as the baseline for abnormal returns in the local market, suggesting potential market inefficiencies. However, most variables in regression analysis do not significantly address the research …

This study examines whether intangible capital influences capital structure which influent to cost of debt. Moreover, this study also analyzes more whether adding the effect of and ESG performance as risk reduction together with intangible capital affect to capital structure by using financial leverage and WACC cost of debt as the dependent variable and using intangible capital and ESG performance as independent variable. The empirical results of this study show intangible capital and financial leverage are not relevant under these equations. Moreover, they also have no relationship between intangible capital and cost of debt, and there is a 10% chance …

The Role Of Bank Capital Through Monetary Policy Transmission Mechanism, Waraluk Rosmontee Jan 2022

The Role Of Bank Capital Through Monetary Policy Transmission Mechanism, Waraluk Rosmontee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines the role of bank capital in the transmission of monetary policy, considering the bank lending channel (BLC) and financial development. Analyzing bank-level data from nine countries during 2007-2021 with GMM method, the study finds that well-capitalized banks are better positioned to expand loan supply and withstand adverse shocks. However, behavioral patterns differ between developed and ASEAN countries. In developed nations, policy rate changes have inconclusive effects on loan growth, while profitable banks and inflation drive credit expansion. In ASEAN countries, policy rate increases are associated with loan growth, reflecting favorable economic conditions. Financial development impacts credit expansion …

Flow-Performance Relationship In Defi Yield Aggregator, Apisara Pornprasith

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is a new financial infrastructure with applications similar to traditional financial products, such as exchange, lending, derivatives, and asset management. This paper empirically investigates Yearn finance, one of the fastest-growing and largest in DeFi yield aggregator protocols for on-chain asset management, to demonstrate the flow-performance relationship and compare it with mutual funds in traditional finance. According to the findings, there is a positive non-linear relationship between fund flows and recent performance for using stablecoin deposited. In contrast, we cannot find this relationship for using cryptocurrency. Then, we look further into stablecoin holder behaviour and our findings show …

The research aims to achieve two main objectives. Firstly, to analyze the potential of the enhanced momentum …

The Impact Of Government Response To Covid-19 On Stock Return Predictability, Disayadej Dangdej Jan 2022

The Impact Of Government Response To Covid-19 On Stock Return Predictability, Disayadej Dangdej

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Recession is known to cause an increase in stock return predictability. The COVID-19 pandemics had not only resulted in sickness and loss of life but also plunged global economy into recession prompting governments to come up with measures to combat the disease. This paper first confirms that return predictability increased due the spread of COVID-19 using data from 41 countries on variations of popular predictors. Furthermore, it shows that government responses to COVID-19 alleviated the pandemic, the recession and reduced the return predictability with varying impact for different government measures. However, cases and deaths from COVID-19 which should have intensified …

Application Of Fractional Exponential Feature To Garch Model Variants For Improvement In Value-At-Risk Prediction, Chanet Saisatian

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research studies about using GARCH model variants as a parametric way in estimation and prediction of daily Value-at-Risk (VaR), one of famous risk measurement especially in financial world. To cope with various stylized facts on market’s volatility, two mixed GARCH models are proposed in this research: HY-GJR-GARCH model, the hybrid between hyperbolic GARCH (HYGARCH) and GJR-GARCH models, and HY-MS-GARCH model as the amalgam between HYGARCH and Markov switching GARCH (MSGARCH) models. These mixed models, along with rich mathematical formulations and benefits from their base models, are expected that their performance in predicting daily VaR is advanced against the performance …

Accrual-Based Earnings Management And Real Earnings Management Around Two Key Corporate Governance Regulatory Regime Changes In Thailand, Noor Nayeem Hasnat Farhan Jan 2022

Accrual-Based Earnings Management And Real Earnings Management Around Two Key Corporate Governance Regulatory Regime Changes In Thailand, Noor Nayeem Hasnat Farhan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Two major corporate governance-related regulatory changes, one in 1999 and one in 2008, were implemented as a means to increase the independence of boards of directors of public companies in Thailand. I study whether each of these regulatory changes affects the degree of and leads to substitution of accrual-based earnings management (AEM) and real earnings management (REM), plus the effect of family ownership on the type and degree of earning management. The outcomes of the two regulatory changes are different with respect to earnings management. Univariate tests suggest no change in the levels of AEM and REM for the 1999 …

Why Is The Third Principal Component Of The Yield Curve Important: A Point Of View From Reverse Stress Test On Credit Portfolio, Phanuwat Ritpornnarong Jan 2022

Why Is The Third Principal Component Of The Yield Curve Important: A Point Of View From Reverse Stress Test On Credit Portfolio, Phanuwat Ritpornnarong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The focus of this study is to analyze the shape of the yield curve on credit portfolios during crises, specifically those that are exposed to both interest rate and credit risks. To achieve this, We utilized a reverse stress test (RST) and macroeconomic measures (such as GDP and U.S risk-free yields) from the period of 1981 to 2014 to estimate mathematical models. We then utilized a Monte Carlo simulation to determine the most likely scenario for the measures if the portfolio value reaches a pre-specified threshold. The researchers discovered that the shape of the stressed yield curves varied depending on …

The Influence Of International Oil Price Fluctuation On The Exchange Rate Of Countries Along The “Belt And Road”, Yijing Wang, Xueqing Geng, Kun Guo Jan 2022

The Influence Of International Oil Price Fluctuation On The Exchange Rate Of Countries Along The “Belt And Road”, Yijing Wang, Xueqing Geng, Kun Guo

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In recent years, the international crude oil price has become increasingly volatile. It influences the exchange rate changes of relevant countries through economic growth, price level, international balance of payments, and other channels. Such exchange rate fluctuations have caused certain risks for the development of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative. This article analyzes the impact of oil price changes on the exchange rates of countries. Because the fluctuation of oil prices and exchange rates has shown the characteristics of multiple time scales, this study used the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method to obtain the long-cycle and short-cycle sequences of oil …

Treasury Inconvenience Yields During The Covid-19 Crisis, Zhiguo He, Stefan Nagel, Zhaogang Song Jan 2022

Treasury Inconvenience Yields During The Covid-19 Crisis, Zhiguo He, Stefan Nagel, Zhaogang Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In sharp contrast to most previous crisis episodes, the Treasury market experienced severe stress and illiquidity during the COVID-19 crisis, raising concerns that the safe-haven status of US Treasuries may be eroding. We document large shifts in Treasury ownership and temporary accumulation of Treasury and reverse repo positions on dealer balance sheets during this period. We build a dynamic equilibrium asset pricing model in which dealers subject to regulatory balance sheet constraints intermediate demand/supply shocks from habitat agents and provide repo financing to levered investors. The model predicts that Treasury inconvenience yields, measured as the spread between Treasuries and overnight-index …

Dynastic And Generative Intent For First-Generation Black Wealth Creators In A Modern Racial Enclave Economy, Latanya White Jan 2022

Dynastic And Generative Intent For First-Generation Black Wealth Creators In A Modern Racial Enclave Economy, Latanya White

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study explores the underlying causes of the racial wealth gap between Black and White Americans: the absence of intergenerational wealth transfers in Black business families. As American wealth becomes concentrated into fewer and fewer hands, the data reveal that one third of the 400 wealthiest Americans inherited their wealth from the entrepreneurial endeavors of earlier generations in their family, some creating entrepreneurial dynasties. An important aspect of succession planning is the construct of generativity. Generativity is practiced through leading, nurturing, promoting, and teaching the next generation to create things to “move down the generational chain and connect to a …

Defining Smart Contract Defects On Ethereum, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xiapu Luo, Ting Chen Jan 2022

Defining Smart Contract Defects On Ethereum, Jiachi Chen, Xin Xia, David Lo, John Grundy, Xiapu Luo, Ting Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts are programs running on a blockchain. They are immutable to change, and hence can not be patched for bugs once deployed. Thus it is critical to ensure they are bug-free and well-designed before deployment. A Contract defect is an error, flaw or fault in a smart contract that causes it to produce an incorrect or unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways. The detection of contract defects is a method to avoid potential bugs and improve the design of existing code. Since smart contracts contain numerous distinctive features, such as the gas system. decentralized, it is important …

Tax Avoidance, Corporate Governance, And Corporate Policies, Yang Yang Jan 2022

Tax Avoidance, Corporate Governance, And Corporate Policies, Yang Yang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation includes three essays examining the interactions between tax avoidance, corporate governance, and corporate policies. The first essay exploits corporate governance shocks induced by cross-listing in the U.S., and find that firms tend to engage in less tax avoidance after cross-listing. This effect is more pronounced for firms that experience significant improvements in corporate governance, and for firms from countries with weaker shareholder protection and disclosure requirements. Taken together, the results indicate that cross-listing in the U.S. helps align the interests of managers and shareholders and reduces managerial diversion.

The second essay examines the importance of tax avoidance to …

Two Essays On The Evolution And Role Of Short Selling Activity In Financial Markets, Wanxi Zhao Jan 2022

Two Essays On The Evolution And Role Of Short Selling Activity In Financial Markets, Wanxi Zhao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

My dissertation studies the evolution and role of short selling activity in financial markets. My first essay examines the cross-sectional and time-series variations in the characteristics of equity lending market in the setting of IPO, where, as suggested by Duffie et al. (2002), search frictions are likely to be high. I find that the initial supply of lendable shares and short interest levels increase with offer size, while initial lending fees decrease with offer size. The initial lending fees are also positively related to the bargaining power of lenders and negatively related to the bargaining power of borrowers. The supply …

Three Essays On Splits, Insiders, And Retail Traders, Paul Van Nes Jan 2022

Three Essays On Splits, Insiders, And Retail Traders, Paul Van Nes

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The first essay tests the split signaling hypothesis by examining the reaction of sophisticated investors to stock split announcements. Return-based tests of signaling used in earlier studies produce conflicting results and have been criticized as unreliable. I bypass this criticism by focusing on long-term post-split behavior of short sellers who are generally recognized as sophisticated investors. Upon controlling for alternative hypotheses and conventional short selling determinants, I show that short interest permanently declines in reaction to split announcements. Furthermore, consistent with signaling, the degree of the decline is positively related to signal strength and to the splitter’s level of information …

A Textual Analysis Of Logograms In Chinese Ipo Roadshows: How Agreement Between Investors And Management Relates To Pricing And Performance, James C. Brau, James Cicon, Stephen R. Owen Jan 2022

A Textual Analysis Of Logograms In Chinese Ipo Roadshows: How Agreement Between Investors And Management Relates To Pricing And Performance, James C. Brau, James Cicon, Stephen R. Owen

Faculty Publications

We analyze the interaction between management and investors during Chinese IPO roadshows through Jaccard Similarity analysis of written Chinese logograms. We provide evidence that when agreement is high, investor optimism increases, leading to relatively large first-day underpricing. We further show that high agreement biases investors to systematically overestimate IPO prospects leading to poor long-run abnormal performance. Jaccard Similarity is different from current content analysis methodologies because it is language and culture agnostic, requiring no a priori construction of thematic dictionaries. Elimination of such dictionaries removes the danger that the researcher has imposed predispositions upon the study.

An Analysis Of Selling Concessions, Reallowance Fees, And Price Changes In The Marketing Of Ipos, James C. Brau, Joseph J. Henry Jan 2022

An Analysis Of Selling Concessions, Reallowance Fees, And Price Changes In The Marketing Of Ipos, James C. Brau, Joseph J. Henry

Faculty Publications

This paper provides an economic model resulting in two distinct marketing strategies available to investment bankers. First, we hypothesize that an increased selling effort by brokers is used most effectively when the investment clientele is uninformed. Second, adjusting the offer price of the issue is hypothesized to be employed primarily in large IPOs with a clientele of sophisticated investors, consistent with Shiller’s Impresario Hypothesis. Our pre-IPO bubble (1981-1996) empirical results yield evidence supporting both selling mechanisms. Under-demanded small IPO issues are ‘pushed’ by the brokers, while some under-demanded large IPO issues instead increase the offer price, with large first-day turnover …

Young Firms, Old Capital, Song Ma, Justin Murfin, Ryan Pratt Jan 2022

Young Firms, Old Capital, Song Ma, Justin Murfin, Ryan Pratt

Faculty Publications

Across a broad range of equipment types and industries, we document a pattern of local capital reallocation from older firms to younger firms. Start-ups purchase a disproportion- ate share of old physical capital previously owned by more mature firms. The evidence is consistent with financial constraints driving differential demand for vintage capital. The local supply of used capital influences start-up entry, job creation, investment choices, and growth, particularly when capital is immobile. Meanwhile, as suppliers of used capital, in- cumbents accelerate capital replacement in the presence of younger firms. The evidence suggests previously undocumented benefits to co-location between old and …

Determinants Of Capital Structure: An Expanded Assessment, Toshinori Fukui, Todd Mitton, Robert Schonlau Jan 2022

Determinants Of Capital Structure: An Expanded Assessment, Toshinori Fukui, Todd Mitton, Robert Schonlau

Faculty Publications

Using a standardized methodology, we empirically evaluate 55 proposed determinants of capital structure in terms of statistical significance, economic significance, and identification. We find that robust and economically important determinants of debt ratios are relatively few in number. Nevertheless, because each determinant relates to one of five market imperfections—taxes, distress costs, information asymmetry, agency costs, or supply frictions—we draw conclusions from the evidence as a whole regarding the explanatory power of different capital structure theories. We find greater support for pecking order theory and supply-related theories, with less support for traditional tradeoff theory and agency theory.

Three Essays On Information Asymmetry Across Heterogenous Agents, Shenru Li Jan 2022

Three Essays On Information Asymmetry Across Heterogenous Agents, Shenru Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis models and explores agents’ decisions in reaction to events that serves to increse the heterogeneity among agents. The analysis is conducted on three aspects of financial economics. In chapter 2, we empirically examine how trading by peers on a new platform influences others’ adoption decision. We model the adoption process and find the relationship to be U-shaped, with first movers greatly discouraging their peers from adoption, while late movers slightly discouraging or encouraging their peers.

In chapter 3, we investigate how managerial incentives influence corporate social responsibility (CSR). We examine the staggered adoption of corporate opportunity waiver laws …

Three Essays On Corporate Finance And Applied Econometrics, Pan Jiang Jan 2022

Three Essays On Corporate Finance And Applied Econometrics, Pan Jiang

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation comprises three essays that investigate topics in corporate finance and applied Econometrics.

The first essay examines how digital credit, a Fintech technology, improves micro-business owners' performance by comparing an economically important but often financially disadvantaged group, migrants, with their comparable natives. Using the data on micro-business owners registered with the largest Fintech firm in China, we find that with the access to microloans, migrants achieve greater business revenues compared to their native counterparts. The differential impact of Fintech on migrants versus natives is more pronounced in the businesses with more financial constraints, in more economically developed areas, for …
