This dissertation contributes a framework for analysts and engineering managers to investigate and choose alternative analysis and selection methods based upon their problem and its context. It began as an investigation into the alternative analysis and selection methods used in military planning. The existing military methods were inconsistent, violated the decision science body of knowledge, and provided no guidance to the practitioner on matching methods to problems. Cross-selling different types of games could provide an opportunity for casino operators to generate additional time and money spent on gaming from existing patrons. One way to identify the patrons who are likely to cross-play is mining individual players’ gaming data using predictive analytics. Hence, this study aims to predict casino patrons’ propensity to play both slots and table games, also known as cross-gaming, by applying a data-mining algorithm to patrons’ gaming data. The Exhaustive Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector (E-CHAID) method was employed to predict cross-gaming propensity. What if your alarm clock knew when you got out—and stayed out—of bed? Current alarm clocks happily let you go back to bed after turning them off. In this project, I build an alarm which only stops ringing when you get out bed, and starts ringing again if you lie back in bed.

This project uses capacitance to detect bed occupancy. A person on or near the bed creates a tiny, picofarads level increase in capacitance, as seen by a sensor placed under the mattress. A microprocessor interprets this signal, and also drives an audio alarm. Shielding of the sensor …

The food processing industry must meet customers’ highest quality expectations at the lowest cost. I partnered with Nestlé’s pizza facility in Little Chute, WI, to improve the current customer complaint approach of the quality department, which aimed to improve product quality. To improve the total quality of the system, this project established a defensive method of addressing customer complaints. An AC bias was introduced into microelectromechanical system (MEMS) low-noise sound pressure gradient microphone by Miles, Cui, Su and Hormentcovschi (2014), and its implications for the device's noise performance and directivity readings are discussed. The schematic involved demodulation of the microphone output with external circuitry, and subsequent computer software analysis of the microphone and circuitry outputs. Although insights into noise improvement were frustrated due to subpar noisy components used in the demodulation circuitry, the simultaneous measuring of the microphone's varying directivity patterns was shown to be achievable with this AC bias scheme.

Amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-IGZO) is a transparent amorphous oxide semiconductor (TAOS) that has shown promise as transparent thin film transistors (TTFTs) in various display applications. Within a-IGZO films, states can form in the band gap that hinder TTFT performance. In order to elucidate the origin of these states, we examined the formation of the subgap states for a-IGZO thin films with various compositions. We observed a positive correlation between the subgap formation and the percentage of oxygen ruling out oxygen deficiencies as a factor in the formation of subgap states. Aside from a safe flight, airline passengers expect to arrive to their destination on time. With an abundance of flights in the United States arriving late each day, it has yet to be determined if the airport's layout plays a role. This research looks at four common runway configuration types at hub and non-hub airports to determine if runway configurations affect arrival delays. A two-way ANOVA is conducted comparing the means of the on-time arrival percentage between airports exhibiting each of the four runway configurations as well as hub and non-hub airport status. The research was justified based on the rapid growth of LCC travel in Thailand, particularly in domestic and regional travel. There is a relative lack of successful explanation of the choice of LCCs in Thailand, with only a few studies addressing topics like passenger satisfaction and perceptions of service quality.
